Hunting 101 - Class 5 (Wednesday Period 7)

When the students came in, they found the usual set up, with a bunch of handouts sitting beside the sign in sheet.

"Good afternoon," John said to his students when everyone had taken their seats. "Today we're not going to be talking about ghosts or demons or any other kind of creature or entity. Today we're going to talk about curses. The handout gives a definition and a brief look at various types of curses.

"There's also some information some examples on some cursed objects for you to look over." John paused to give them a chance to read through the information.

"Not all cursed objects are like that. Some are very mild, the equivalent of a mosquito bite, something you could just overlook as a run of bad luck. Some are worse, deadlier. There are ways that are supposed to cleanse an object or place, to break the curse." John paused. "Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. As you read, there's a wide variety of the type of curses. To successfully break a curse you really need to know how it was cast and by whom. And sometimes, often, that information is difficult to come by. Especially with older items. In that case, when you can't find exactly the origin of a cursed item, the best thing you can do is get out of its way." He looked around the class meeting various students eyes. "If it's a piece of land that is cursed, you clear out and make sure anyone else there does as well.

"If it's a cursed object, try to handle it as little as possible. Silk, salt and iron can all make it safer to handle an object, but nothing will block every curse. You can try to destroy the object, but often that's not going to work. Your best bet is going to be put it somewhere it won't be handled, won't be a threat. Find a spot as far away from people as you can and bury it." He smiled grimly. "If you can't get out of its way, you get it out of yours."

John got up and paced the front of the room as he continued talking. "For the next class, I'm not going to lay out for you what you need to know and need to do. You're getting the exact same information that I usually have at the beginning of a hunt. In fact you already have it. That's the rest of those handouts. Your homework is to pair up and go over that information, and plan out what you're going to do next Wednesday. I'm available if you have any questions or want any advice, but you'll have to figure out what you're after on your own.

John smiled at them. "So you better get started."

[OOC: wait for OCD is up; go nuts :)]

Hermione looks up from reading her handouts again, looks around, and sees Dean. "Still need a partner?" she asks.

"I do, yeah." He looked pleased, and waved the handouts. "All I got is maybe the ballet barre-thingy was cursed by a jealous dancer."

"Possibly," she says, though she doubts it. "I can't see many people having an interest in what goes on in a dance studio, and I would immediately discount the owner or teacher since they need their job. So the safe bet is one of the other girls. It would probably have to be a common item, too. Mirrors, maybe."

"Mirrors are pretty creepy, that makes sense. I guess we won't know what else is in there until we see it. Maybe shoes? Could it be the dance place itself?" He jots down some scribbly notes in the margins of the articles.

"It could. I think it would be a very big job, though. Shoes are a possibility... What else do dancers use often? Music, maybe? Whatever they use to play their music?"

"How are we going to...not get cursed? While we're looking for whatever it is? I mean, if we wrap our hands in silk, maybe that'll work, but what if it doesn't?"

"Take all the proper precautions, and then we have to get rid of the object. Bury it if we can. Shatter a mirror and throw the pieces into the ocean. Beyond that, I think there's more research involved."

"I guess we should try and figure something out about the girls themselves. If they had anything in common?" Dean suggested.

She nods. "Definitely. Common friends, whether they shared items..."

[Heading to work soon, will be back later!]
