Criminal Justice [Tuesday, October 3, first period]

"Good morning," V said, and this week there were no props to assist with class. "Today we're simply going to talk. Just talk. No activities. No mousetraps. Just words."

He folded his gloved hands behind his back, and began to pace. "In your life, there are and will be injustices committed. And whether they be personal or for the good of a great deal of people, it should have little to no bearing on the reaction of a truly justly-minded individual."

"An eye for an eye," he said, facing the class. "If one has wronged you, is it unreasonable to ask them to pay for this? If they have wronged many, they should pay as well, but in the same manner? If someone hurt you, or your family, or your friends, would you want to give them their due? And do you all think that is morally wrong, to want to be repaid for your pain?"

V tilted his head at the class. "Discuss. Think."

[So, I'm having some access issues. I'll do my damnedest to reply to everyone, but I'd really, really appreciate it if you guys talked to each other so that the discussion flows even if V's a little quiet.]

"The law says yeah, it's unreasonable. I disagree. There should be a balance, a proportional response so people don't get away with screwing other people around."

Tyler raised an eyebrow. "Who decides proportional?," he asked. "If someone is harming many people in a small way, does hurting them in a big way make sense? I think it does, sometimes."

"Going after someone -- or something -- that's hurt you or your family.. it's more than just vengenace," Dean said seriously. "If they did it to you, what's to stop them from doing it to someone else?"

Peter thought for a long while before responding. "Justice isn't vengeance. Once people start moving outside of the law to seek their own revenge for wrongs done, the law can't stand." He paused for a second. "Some times the law shouldn't stand though. If it's wrong or injust."

Alanna looked very torn and was just sitting there listening for a bit.

Alec smirked, the expression nearly completely lacking in amusement. "Some people deserve to have everything they've done turned back on them. Some things can't be forgiven."

"There are people I care enough that, if something was done to them, nothing could stop be from vengeance or revenge or whatever." John shrugs. "And I wouldn't feel bad."

"Far as morality's concerned, Bible says you're supposed to turn the other cheek," Seely shrugged. "But then it's hardly the most consistent book in existence."

Bel looked bored. "Dumb question," he muttered. "Of course you go for payback."

"I think it's important to try the proper channels, but I also know there are times when they just don't work," Aeryn says. "Sometimes you just have to do something."

Teddy replies very quietly, "No."

And all those bad feelings from the weekend? Completely back.

Layla had to bite her lip and think for a bit before answering. "I don't think it's right to expect an eye for an eye if someone's hurt you. There are different ways of dealing with people, but eye for an eye often means stooping down to the other person's level, and that's no good. If the person has hurt a lot of people...I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't want to take them down. And I don't necessarily think that's a bad idea, from a moral standpoint.

Luke was quiet for a long time.

"Sometimes the offense is so huge that it can never really be balanced," he said. "Seeking revenge for the death of a planet or the extermination of an entire way of life through one-on-one combat seems...pointless."

He bit his lip. "But you can't not do something about it."

River thought for some time on this. "It depends on the results. Will it avenging past wrongs make the future better, then yes." She paused. "It might expose a truth that needs to be told." Then she got a worried look in her eyes. "But going from victim to avenger will change you. Perhaps not always for the better. That might be the price to pay."

"It's not unreasonable to get payment for being wronged, but an eye for an eye isn't the right way," Peter said. "Maybe a punch in the nose for an eye because otherwise you're the same as the eye-poking jerk."

"But it's not wrong to want it."

Z thought about it for a long time before saying, "You said is it unreasonable to ask them to pay, and I think the answer to that is 'of course not.' But they're probably gonna say no, so it really is, should they be made to pay? And I think yes, they should. If they've wronged you, they shouldn't get away with it."
