Criminal Justice [Tuesday, October 3, first period]

"Good morning," V said, and this week there were no props to assist with class. "Today we're simply going to talk. Just talk. No activities. No mousetraps. Just words."

He folded his gloved hands behind his back, and began to pace. "In your life, there are and will be injustices committed. And whether they be personal or for the good of a great deal of people, it should have little to no bearing on the reaction of a truly justly-minded individual."

"An eye for an eye," he said, facing the class. "If one has wronged you, is it unreasonable to ask them to pay for this? If they have wronged many, they should pay as well, but in the same manner? If someone hurt you, or your family, or your friends, would you want to give them their due? And do you all think that is morally wrong, to want to be repaid for your pain?"

V tilted his head at the class. "Discuss. Think."

[So, I'm having some access issues. I'll do my damnedest to reply to everyone, but I'd really, really appreciate it if you guys talked to each other so that the discussion flows even if V's a little quiet.]

"The law says yeah, it's unreasonable. I disagree. There should be a balance, a proportional response so people don't get away with screwing other people around."

Tyler raised an eyebrow. "Who decides proportional?," he asked. "If someone is harming many people in a small way, does hurting them in a big way make sense? I think it does, sometimes."

"Going after someone -- or something -- that's hurt you or your family.. it's more than just vengenace," Dean said seriously. "If they did it to you, what's to stop them from doing it to someone else?"

Peter thought for a long while before responding. "Justice isn't vengeance. Once people start moving outside of the law to seek their own revenge for wrongs done, the law can't stand." He paused for a second. "Some times the law shouldn't stand though. If it's wrong or injust."

"It's damn good motivation," Dean said. "Not much can keep you going at that level of obsessiveness except vengeance. But.. you gotta watch that it doesn't take you over too. Make you reckless, or make you forget the things that are more important."

"Then it is their duty to work to change the government or the law," Peter replied. "Either working from within or, if necessary, from outside to overthrow it. But it's not enough for an outlaw to stand outside of the government just because he or she can."

Alanna looked very torn and was just sitting there listening for a bit.

Dean nodded. "Like keeping your family alive. Keeping yourself alive for them. Vengeance isn't much good if you wind up dead yourself."

"Sometimes," Kawalsky agreed. "I don't know who gets to make the choice though. Anyone who has the power, I guess."
