[Media Studies & Communication: Week 5, 4th Period]

The coffee machine burbled at the back of the classroom as the students filed in, Logan sipping his own cup of java as he waited for everyone to take a seat. The screen was off, and a table with all of the handouts so far, as well as a few new ones, in nice neat stacks was at the sidewall.

When everyone had seated themselves, Logan stood up, smiling at the class. "'Morning, class. As I said last week, today we'll be covering what your midterm is.

"Until now, we've been covering media and how it conveys information - now I'll be asking you to put that knowledge to work. Your project will be to construct a mini marketing campaign around a product, either real or imagined, and come up with some sort of advertisement that you think would adequately market it. It could be as a print advertisement or a commercial or something of your own devising."

Logan gestured to the side-table with the handouts. "Feel free to reacquaint yourself with what we've covered so far as you guys pair up. If you really want, you can go solo, but I'd prefer if you made more of a concerted effort - two perspectives can give you a better idea of whether you're hitting your mark than just yourself.

"I'll be asking for a short proposal to be submitted by next week. You don't have to detail it too much, but I'd like to know what other information I can have available as well as what kind of equipment you might need.

"The midterm projects will be due by October 23rd. We'll have at least a half-session between then and now where you can work on it in class and ask me any questions that come up. Today you can just focus on finding your partner and brainstorm campaign ideas. Go ahead and have fun with it, be silly or serious. Bonus points for creativity."

[ooc: Wait for OCD la. Play nice! As with all assignments, you can do as little or as much as you like. You can be elaborate and actually photoshop something up or just describe it when the time comes - it's all for fun, so go crazy.]

Sam smiled. "Absolutely. What do we want to advertise?"

"Uh. Alcohol?" suggested Elizabeth helpfully.

Sam snickered. "Does it need advertising?"

Re: Find a partner

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2006-10-02 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"It might not need it, but they do advertise it," said Elizabeth, grinning. "So it's probably an easy thing to advertise."

"Who are we to argue?" Sam asked. "Okay, ignore that, because we argue with everything, but alcohol it is, I guess. Anything in particular?"

Elizabeth grinned again. "Uh, I have a personal bias towards vodka, but that is just me," she said. "What do you think?"

Re: Find a partner

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-10-02 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Sam thought about that. "Yeah, vodka's okay. No bad associated memories, so we're good." She grinned.

Elizabeth laughed. "That's always a good thing to take into consideration," she agreed.

"Hey, you read the reports," Sam said under her breath.

Re: Find a partner

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2006-10-02 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"Every last one of them," murmured Elizabeth, groaning slightly.

Re: Find a partner

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-10-02 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Sam patted her on the shoulder. "We're a little wordy."

Re: Find a partner

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2006-10-02 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Elizabeth had a pained look on her face. "Just a little?" she asked. "Did you ever read Daniel's reports?"

Re: Find a partner

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-10-02 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"Um...sometimes," Sam patted her sympathetically again. "Ooh! That could be our advertising. A big pile of reports and a bottle of alcohol and...yeah, I'm stuck."

Re: Find a partner

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2006-10-02 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Elizabeth giggled. "As long as it's an abandoned pile of reports and a half empty bottle, I'm all for it," she said. "There should probably be the idea of sex in it too, considering how sex is supposed to sell."

Re: Find a partner

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-10-02 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"Some of those reports had sex in them, I know they did," Sam muttered. "And if not, they should have."

"Hmmm. Maybe an undergarment of some kind--like someone's significant other came in, saw the reports, left, came back with some vodka, and was the ultimate distraction? It can just say 'Essential' or something like that underneath."

Re: Find a partner

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2006-10-02 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Elizabeth snickered. "That they did, yes," she whispered. "Some a bit more than I really wanted to know about."

She grinned. "I was thinking something along those lines too. What is it about great minds and all that?"

Re: Find a partner

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-10-02 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Sam rolled her eyes. "That makes two of us. And I think the saying is that great minds shouldn't spend days at a time reading boring reports?"

"Big fantasy on boring days," she acknowledged.

Re: Find a partner

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2006-10-02 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Elizabeth nodded firmly. "Especially reading twenty-odd floors undergound," she said. "I just couldn't get used to their being no windows!"

She giggled slightly.

Re: Find a partner

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-10-02 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"I had one window that I could have stared at all the time, and did," Sam smiled, "but it still didn't beat the fantasy. All those uniforms were the same, you know? We needed some variety."

Re: Find a partner

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2006-10-02 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Elizabeth nodded slowly. "My favorite place there too," she said. "At least you got some when you went home. Our sameness just continued."

Re: Find a partner

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-10-02 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"I refuse to believe McKay and Zelenka didn't come up with ways to break up the monotony," Sam chuckled.

Re: Find a partner

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2006-10-02 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Elizabeth just groaned. "I could have done without McKay's attempts," she admmitted.

Re: Find a partner

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-10-02 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
The snickering continued. "Poor Elizabeth. Maybe you should give up diplomacy and get your degree in child psychology instead."

Re: Find a partner

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2006-10-02 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"The scary thing is? It would probably help with my diplomacy somedays!"

Re: Find a partner

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2006-10-02 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
And Sam got a mental image of McKay and diapers and almost fell of her chair laughing.
