Ethics (Thursday, September 28, 6th period)

Vader swept into the room precisely on time, slamming the door hard enough to reverberate down the hallway. He dropped a box of cookies onto his desk.

"Today we talk about how a strict sense of right and wrong interferes in efficiency," he said, pacing the room and clearly intending to intimidate as many students as possible. "Employees who do not believe that there will be consequences for their incompetence become lazy, stupid, and easily replaceable."

Vader took the box of cookies from his desk and passed it around the room. "Each of you has a cookie," he said. "You will spend the rest of the class period using the tactics of fear, shame and guilt to get the other people in this classroom to give you their cookies." And yes, that word sounded incredibly strange coming from him. "Whoever has the most cookies at the end of the class will get to keep them."

He crossed his arms over his chest. "Are these tactics unethical? Does it matter if you get what you want?"

Isabel sat with her cookie and watched to see if anyone left their cookie unguarded so she could grab it with her alien-fu.

Isabel laughed. "No. And asking again isn't going to help. I have lots of practice ignoring annoying people."

Alanna pouted and took Faithful out of her bag. She poked the cat who sighed and did his best to look cute and adorable. "Cookie?"

"Leave me alone now and I'll make Annie share her catnip with you," she offered.

Faithful purrred and blink up at Isabel with his violet eyes. "Cooookie?"

"No!" she grinned, figuring she could put up with pretty kitty pleading till the end of class.

Alanna wasn't giggling, really. "You're so mean Isabel. Look at how adorable he is! And you're making him sad!" I'm not paid enough Faithful thought and tried to look even more adorable and sad.

"I'm not sure I'd describe that look as sad," she chuckled. "Burdened and put upon perhaps. With overtones of bored and annoyed. But definitely not sad."

"He's not annoyed!" Alanna said. "Are you bored?" "Of course not." Faithful said in a monotone.

Isabel looked at her watch. "Well look at it this way, you only have about 30 minutes more of pleading ineffectively."

Sam grinned. "Think we can double-team Jack and split the cookie?"

"Try and out charm the charmer?" she asked. "Or go for the sad and dejected route? Which worked so well on Bel!"

"He's a sucker for a good pout? It's trite and female and predictible, but it's also effective."

"I've been able to use it on him once or twice," Isabel said. "And I suppose it does fall under the category of guilt."

"But I don't want to manipulate him," Sam sighed. "I don't want to do that to anybody. Want a cookie?"

"He can take it. Particularly in a case like this. But I know what you mean. In real life? No way," she said firmly. "And if you're offering, sure."

Sam handed over her cookie. "I know he can take it--but I'd feel wrong."

"It's like cheating," Isabel said as she took the cookie.

Isabel looked around to make sure Vader was out of earshot, she hoped at at least. "And that would probably make him happy in a twisted way. We can't have that."

"Nope. No happiness," Sam shook her head. "Maybe we should have organized a cookie boycott. Or a cookie commune."

"I'm thinking a massive delivery from J,GoB," Isabel snickered. "At least six dozen cookies for each student."
