Ethics (Thursday, September 28, 6th period)

Vader swept into the room precisely on time, slamming the door hard enough to reverberate down the hallway. He dropped a box of cookies onto his desk.

"Today we talk about how a strict sense of right and wrong interferes in efficiency," he said, pacing the room and clearly intending to intimidate as many students as possible. "Employees who do not believe that there will be consequences for their incompetence become lazy, stupid, and easily replaceable."

Vader took the box of cookies from his desk and passed it around the room. "Each of you has a cookie," he said. "You will spend the rest of the class period using the tactics of fear, shame and guilt to get the other people in this classroom to give you their cookies." And yes, that word sounded incredibly strange coming from him. "Whoever has the most cookies at the end of the class will get to keep them."

He crossed his arms over his chest. "Are these tactics unethical? Does it matter if you get what you want?"

"I could." Jack looked thoughtfully at his cookie. "Actually, I think I might."

Aeryn looks at him suspiciously. "Really."

"Maybe." He looked at her, head tipped to the side. "I'm not sure I want to succeed at anything he," and he jerked his thumb at Vader, "wants us to do."

"Hm. You have a point. I can definitely help you there, then."

Because while Aeryn would normally think the same thing, this assignment is kind of second nature. Something could be said about her own ethics, but she just wants the cookies.

Jack nodded. "It kind of goes against the grain just to hand it over, though," he explained, starting to smile. "What would you give me for it?"

"How long has it been since I last threatened to shoot you?" she wonders, completely conversationally.

"It's been awhile." His smile was turning into a grin. "I kind of miss it."

"All right, then give me the cookie or I shoot you," she tells him.

"I enjoyed that. A lot," he said, waggling his eyebrows at her. "But not enough to give you my cookie."

"Do you really want me seriously threatening to shoot you over a cookie?" Aeryn asks. "I'm not above it."

"Ah, Aeryn, anything serious you wanted to do to me would make my heart sing." Jack placed his hand over his heart and looked soulfully at her. "Only problem is, you don't have a gun."

"Stop that," she tells him. "And just because I don't have one with me doesn't mean we're not both in Gun Club."

"Stop what?" he asked innocently, fluttering his eyelashes at her. "And I know. Gun Club is the new high point of my week, because it means I get to see you."

"You have problems," she decides. "Now give me the frelling cookie."

Jack tried to look hurt with admittedly limited success. "It's okay, I've resigned myself to gazing longingly at you from afar." He looked down at the cookie, then quickly put his hands behind his back. "I'll give it to you in exchange for, hmmm," he looked thoughtfully at the ground, then back up at her, smiling hugely. "A kiss? On the cheek?"

She stares at him in disbelief. "Are you serious?"

Jack was genuinely enjoying himself and he shrugged and kept smiling, ~~unaware how close he was getting to probable imminent and painful death~~. "It was only a suggestion. I can keep my cookie if you don't want it. Be a lot easier to win with it, though," he pointed out. "And unlike shooting this is something you can do now."

"I'd enjoy shooting more," she tells him.

"But it won't get you my cookie," he replied. "Would it really be that bad?"

"I haven't given a thought as to whether it would or wouldn't, it's just not going to happen, especially in the middle of class," she says.

"Okay," he said looking crestfallen. "Are you open to negotiation? How about a handshake?"

"I could be open to that," she says slowly.

"Now we're getting somewhere." Jack was grinning again. "I get to hold your hand and in return I'll give you my cookie?"

"How did you progress to hand-holding?"

"I have to hold your hand in order to shake it," he pointed out. "It's only logical."
