Ethics (Thursday, September 28, 6th period)

Vader swept into the room precisely on time, slamming the door hard enough to reverberate down the hallway. He dropped a box of cookies onto his desk.

"Today we talk about how a strict sense of right and wrong interferes in efficiency," he said, pacing the room and clearly intending to intimidate as many students as possible. "Employees who do not believe that there will be consequences for their incompetence become lazy, stupid, and easily replaceable."

Vader took the box of cookies from his desk and passed it around the room. "Each of you has a cookie," he said. "You will spend the rest of the class period using the tactics of fear, shame and guilt to get the other people in this classroom to give you their cookies." And yes, that word sounded incredibly strange coming from him. "Whoever has the most cookies at the end of the class will get to keep them."

He crossed his arms over his chest. "Are these tactics unethical? Does it matter if you get what you want?"

"Don't even start to cheat like that," Bel said, looking away.

"I'm not cheating," Isabel said quietly as she rested a hand on his arm. If Bel turned to look, he'd see that her eyes were shiny with tears.

Bel squeezed his eyes shut. "I'm not looking, I'm not looking," he chanted. His best defense to tears would to be an asshole. However, it was Isabel, and he didn't want to do that to her.

Isabel sniffed delicately.

He cracked one eye open. "What's in it for me?" he asked.

"My deepest gratitude and thanks," she said, raising a hand to wipe away the single perfect tear sliding down her cheek.

Bel glowered and passed Isabel a cookie. "They're only cookies," he said, half to himself.

Isabel took the cookie and smiled brightly. "You're the best Bel!"

"I'm a sucker," Bel muttered.

"No, you're a sweet wonderful guy who didn't want to see his friend look sad," she smiled. "You're also a slightly battered looking guy. What happened?"

"Demons attacked Dr. Wilson and Blair," Bel said, shrugging. "I had to kill some of 'em."

"Are you okay?" Isabel asked, not doubting for a second that if he killed them, they needed killing. "Did you get looked over at the clinic?"

"Aziraphale healed me a little," Bel said. He grinned ruefully. "Hurt like hell. An angel isn't supposed to heal a demon."

"Times like these are when I miss Max the most. He could have healed you up in a minute. And it's Fandom," she smiled. "A lot of things happen here that you wouldn't expect. But you're sure you're okay? Do you require fussing? Cause I'll fuss for you if you need it."

"I'm fine," Bel lied. "I've had worse. It'll heal up in a few days."

Isabel raised an eyebrow, pretty sure Bel was just being macho. "Are you sure there's nothing you need? At least tell me Phoebe's been looking out for you."

Bel frowned. "She's not here. She's still in San Francisco."

"Tell me you at least made up before she left?"

"Oh, yeah," Bel said. "We're good. She's just still there 'cuz, uh, she got mugged Sunday night and her Grandmother wants to keep an eye on her."

"Oh no," Isabel said, concerned. "Is she okay? Did they catch the guy?"

"No," Bel said. "They didn't. But she's gonna be okay. She's just really shaken up."

"That sucks. Still, I'm glad she's okay. Tell her I was asking about her," she said.

Bel nodded. "I will. Hopefully she'll be back at school by this weekend."

"That's good. But in the meantime, if you need anything..."

"Thanks," Bel said. "I may take you up on that." Even after talking to Phale and Blair, he still wasn't feeling much better about what he'd done.
