It's the first time Aeryn's opened the flight shed herself, and she tries not to think too much about that as she sets up and waits for the others to arrive.

When they do, she greets them with, "If you don't already know me, my name is Aeryn Sun, I'm former military, spent a good part of the last three cy- years piloting a fighter ship and was doing so as late as this February. You've all shown at least a little interest in flying and learning how to do it, so this would be the place for it. Now I'd like you all to introduce yourselves, tell me what experience you have, and if there's anything in particular you'd like to study here, I'll see what I can do to get it."

She gestures to the simulator and says, "You'll also be able to get into the simulator this time. It's called a Prowler, and this is what I'm used to flying. It's used for reconnaissance and battle, and you'll even be able to operate weapons systems. Luckily you can't really shoot anything, no matter what your experience. If you need me for anything, I'm around."

"It's possible. Since this is only a club and not a class, I might have a hard time getting it past the administration," she says. "And right now some of the people scare me and we aren't even off the ground. I appreciate you not being one of them."

He snorted lightly, putting the Prowler into a slow roll as he tried out the pulse cannons. "My pleasure. And I'd like to try it again sometime, so they'd better shape up or I'm going to be grumpy."

Aeryn likes when people know what they're doing without having to be told. "I'll see what I can do. Earth-based military, then?" she guesses.

Alec nodded as he played with the controls, testing out what the ship could do with a practiced efficiency. "Kind of born into it."

"Seriously?" she asks, just because people always looks at her strangely when she says that. "So was I. You've got some good training."

He shot her a grin. "Thanks. And yeah. Not necessarily what I would've chosen, but it's got me this far, I guess."

Aeryn can kind of agree with that. "Mostly piloting or were you infantry as well?"

"Intended for infantry," Alec said, increasing his speed casually. "But there's only so much infantry training you can do before you're just repeating the same shit over and over. So they kept throwing training at us as long as it'd stick."

"Sounds like the military might be the same even across the galaxies," she says, trying not to be weirded out by that. And noting that she still hasn't had to give a single instruction, says, "You like flying, have a natural aptitude, or both?"

"Both," he said, grinning. "Manually predisposed towards military excellence through genetics. And really? Not all that surprised about the military."

She shakes her head, thinking this sounds very familiar. "I tell people here this sort of thing and they look at me like I'm insane."

Alec snickered, pulling the Prowler in a tight U-turn. "Yeah, I've mostly passed it off as military school. People seem to find it easier to believe I was made in a test tube than brought up to be a soldier."

"Unfortunately I think it's too late for me to use that story," she says. "It's a different world that people just don't seem to understand, even if they're planning to enlist someday. I don't get it."

"Imagine them finding out their own government's been doing it under their noses." He shook his head. "You can't just say 'alien' and have it be a given things are different?"

"For a little while. I look human. I think they forget," she says. "Though I can't imagine anyone wouldn't believe the government was doing anything with the military out of the public eye. It's what they do."

"Not so much that they don't believe it," Alec allowed, pulling the Prowler in a couple tight maneuvers. "More that they don't seem to get how extensive it is. And genetic engineering still isn't exactly the biggest priority of the American public."

Aeryn could get into a whole rant about that. "We're bred into the units we end up in. The genetic modifications become just that- genetic- to the point where they don't even have to work on each individual. I can't believe they haven't even gotten close to that yet," she admits, and throws a glance at him. "In the mainstream, at least."

"We're still, technically, the protoype level," Alec said, pulling the Prowler in to land. "Each of us handmade, each of us refined to the last genetic marker. And I was born about seven years ago, according to this timeline." His tone was dryly amused. "Really can't wait to see how much better it gets than us."

Seven years. The whole planet is slow. "Neither can I, really."
