Intro to 21st Century American Culture - Monday - Period Five

As Lorelai’s students entered the classroom, they were greeted by the aroma of a pumpkin scented candle. There were bowls of candy placed around the room and Lorelai had hung fake spider webs around the room.

Once everyone had arrived and was seated, Lorelai grinned.

“Today we’re going to start learning about traditional American holidays,” she said. “I’m sure you’ve all noticed my decorations. We’re only about a month away from celebrating Halloween.” She went on to give a short lecture on the origins of Halloween and the modern celebrations of said holiday.

“Of course, after Halloween, we only have a few weeks before the winter holiday bonanza,” Lorelai continued, passing out a handout with information about Thanksgiving, Christmas, Yule, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and New Years as she discussed the various holidays.

Bel looked unhappy throughout the class. "You don't know the half of the dangers of Halloween," he muttered absently.

"Can't find a costume?" Marty asked. "I'm sure we could find something for you. What do you want to go as?"

"I'm sure I can find something if I wanted to," Bel said. "I'm just not in the mood right now to think about stupid things like that."

"Dude. Free candy. Get over it and find a costume," Marty said rolling his eyes. "Want me to find one for you? I think Veronica left that sailor outfit here before she left."

"I think that'd suit you better," Bel said irritably. "Why don't you try it on?"

"I don't have the legs for it," Marty said rolling his eyes. "You're certainly in a grumpy mood today. What's the matter? You can't even take a joke?"

"What do you mean?" Lyra asked quietly. Halloween had never been big in her world, what with the totalitarian Church government.

"It's when the veil between the worlds is thinnest," Bel said. "And some demons can come back from the dead for revenge."

"I wonder why my father didn't try it then..." Lyra mused, almost to herself.

"I take it these aren't the fun, conscience-type daemons?" she asked.

Bel shook his head. "More like the 'You killed me and now I want revenge' type of demons."

Kaylee looked over the handouts. She was completely fascinated by the holidays and traditions, especially Halloween.

Cedric will not be telling anyone what he agreed to wear for Halloween. Nope, no one.

Pete paid attention to the Halloween information, frowning. "You're kidding, right? I've been an American all my life and I ain't never encountered most of this stuff."

Then he turned to the other winter holidays. "Yule? Kwanzaa?!"

What had this country come to?

This world wasn't getting any less weird. Zuko felt like headdesking.

Stark had mostly ignored the goings-on of last Halloween. He was now thinking he should probably have paid more attention instead of hiding out in his room.

He was also wondering if he could wander around off the island, mask and all, without attracting much attention on Halloween. Not that he had any reason to go off the island, he was just curious.

Briar focused on the most important part. "Free candy?"

Luke grinned over at him. "My kind of holiday."

"The costume part might be annoying though. Can we just get the candy?"

"I like how you think!"

Aeryn's been through this once, so she knows this much. She just hopes this Halloween doesn't involve haunted houses.

Jaye is still not feeling fantasic. Therefore she is sleeping at her desk. She can be poked if someone really needs her.

The good thing about being a) from Earth and b) from the past one hundred years is that Alfons knew very much about these holidays. Sure, he might not have celebrated some of them or knew the details, but he still knew about them. And frankly? It actually brought a smile to his face, remembering warm and happy memories from when he was a mere big, blue-eyed child.

He mostly remembered cookies.

Every holiday has cookies.

Evie started drawing a traditional Arabic costume for Halloween, which sounded very jolly to her, here in America.

Lyra leaned over to see what Evie was doodling.
