Intro to 21st Century American Culture - Monday - Period Five

As Lorelai’s students entered the classroom, they were greeted by the aroma of a pumpkin scented candle. There were bowls of candy placed around the room and Lorelai had hung fake spider webs around the room.

Once everyone had arrived and was seated, Lorelai grinned.

“Today we’re going to start learning about traditional American holidays,” she said. “I’m sure you’ve all noticed my decorations. We’re only about a month away from celebrating Halloween.” She went on to give a short lecture on the origins of Halloween and the modern celebrations of said holiday.

“Of course, after Halloween, we only have a few weeks before the winter holiday bonanza,” Lorelai continued, passing out a handout with information about Thanksgiving, Christmas, Yule, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and New Years as she discussed the various holidays.

“Any questions?”

"I wonder why my father didn't try it then..." Lyra mused, almost to herself.

"I take it these aren't the fun, conscience-type daemons?" she asked.

Bel shook his head. "More like the 'You killed me and now I want revenge' type of demons."

"Hm," Lyra said. "Well, if anything, I think this school is more likely prepared for something like that than my last school. D'you think it'll happen?" She sounded more curious than alarmed.

Bel shrugged. "With this place, it's just as likely as we get undead demons coming back for revenge as it is an invasion of wee tiny bunnies wearing pumpkin heads."

Lyra started to laugh then stopped, looking puzzled. "Wait, what?"

"That's right, you weren't here for the wee tiny bunnies, were you?" Bel said.

"Um, no." Lyra said decisively. "What happened? Other than, uh, wee tiny bunnies?"

"Hundreds of 'em," Bel said gravely. "Everywhere. And they liked to hug. Then the next day they were gone."

"Okay, that's... bizarre." Lyra blinked, and then laughed at the absurdity of it. "Does stuff like that happen often?"

"All the time," Bel said. "If it's not wee tiny bunnies, it's jello dragons. Or tentacle demons."

"Why do people' guardians let them come here? Do they just not know? Or is it supposed to 'build character'?" That last was with a wry smile.
