World History in a Nutshell

"Okay," began Daniel, standing at the front of the class. "Today, we're going to be looking at the Romans. Or rather, we're going to be discussing them.

There's a handout on your desks.

We're going to be considering a remark made by Napoleon. He said that, "the story of Rome is the story of the world." What do you think he meant by this? How is it that the "western world grew up in Rome's shadow?"

After this discussion was over, he waved at the computers.

"Today's game is Death in Rome. Have fun!"

Evie gulped. "Yes. Well. My parents are archaeologists. And I'm going to be one. I should know this." She smiled a little at him, hands laced together to keep her from flailing.

Cameron smiled back, trying to look reassuring as he seemed to have made her nervous. "That's cool. It's good to know what you want."

Evie beamed at him, shyness forgotten. "Yes, it is, isn't it?" She hugged herself a little. "And it will be much easier to get experience and learn at this school than at my last. Are you at all interested in history?"

"I like it," he nodded. "But more as an interest than actually a career goal."

"We're starting an archaeology club, for fun. You're more than welcome to stop by." Evie looked abashed. "Although possibly it's more work than someone who isn't an archaeologist or anthropologist would find interesting."

"I'll keep it in mind," Cameron said. "I haven't decided what I'm going to sign up for."
