[Media Studies & Communication: Week 3, 4th Period]

As the class trailed in, the screen was the sort of black that indicated it was on, but receiving no image. Logan was still involved in conversation, the voices somewhat muted but definitely coming in through the speakers.

"--Are you sure?" The woman, whoever she was, sounded concerned.

"I'm positive. It'll be fine." Logan looked from the blank screens to the students and motioned for them to take a handout and a seat before turning back. "I promise, even. It'll go great."

"C'mon, mom," broke in another - male - voice, clearly amused. "You heard the professor. Let him have his moment."

An irritated, long-suffering sigh. "A'ight," she relented. "Should be up in a couple minutes. Dix is working on it."

"Thanks," Logan replied, and then turned back to the class proper, smiling. "Hi guys. Today, we've got something kind of special. The handouts you got, obviously, are about color. Color is another way you can convey information - often a feeling or an emotion - in advertisements, the way you dress, and some people even believe you can heal with color."

He motioned to their desks, where at each sat a small easel, a set of paints, and several brushes. "Today you're going to get a demonstration of someone who primarily uses color in their work, the symbolism and emotion they can bring out using it. Then you're going to try your hand at it, using either your gut feelings, or what you find in the handout."

"Logan? Signal's up."

"Thanks." Logan smiled at the class. "Just keep in mind, our guest has been kind of on his own for a long time, but he's a good guy. Treat him with respect," he said, with the insinuation that anything else would result in a swift detention. "Feel free to ask him questions, but have fun with the assignment, as always."

The screen turned on then, and a large, almost canine face loomed, taking it up almost entirely. "Logan? Logan, it's Joshua for painting with kids?" He blinked at the class. "Ooh. Big kids." When Logan nodded for him to go on, Joshua pulled back from the screen a little, somewhat wide-eyed. "Big kids learning how to paint, Joshua-style? Not hard - you gotta use color, lots of it. Right?"

He shuffled back from the screen, ducking his head as if not used to being on the spot, and pulled into view a couple large canvases.

"Paint from your heart, yeah? Lots of color, and, and..." He paused, looking at the class over the top of one painting. "Big paint strokes! And colors say what you mean. Like... anger. Confusion." He pointed to the dark painting. "Red and black, see?" Joshua looked over the class, grinning. "You try. Do a- a painting of a friend. Or something you like, how it makes you feel. And show me what you got, when you finished, okay?"

Logan stood up from where he'd sat on his desk, nodding to the class. "Go ahead and paint. Joshua will be available to show them to when you're done.

[OOC: WAIT FOR OCD! I'll be going to bed shortly, but start your paintings whenever. The online program lets you link your picture using the "Save and send" option, then just link it to a comment under Joshua's thread and he'll respond when I get up. Slowplay as needed, for those of you with problem schedules. :)]

Mac's never considered herself particularly artistic, but she pulls out some gloopy bright blue paint and starts painting something vaguely circular, if a little blobby.

It's actually pretty fun.

"Blobby," Jake commented with a grin. She was looking for the dark red paint.

"Yeah," Mac said, grinning and biting her lip. "I'm not really sure what I'm painting, so I figured 'blob' was as good a start as any. If nothing else I can add tentacles and turn it into a sea-monster or something."

Jake snickered. "Very smart. I'm gonna make a volcano, I think."

ooc: and now I'm out of net again. boo.

"Ooh, should be atmospheric. Nice," Mac commented turning back to her easel and dabbing on a few more patches of colour.

Jaye is still painting quietly. Like a quiet thing who's trying to OD on Advil.

Jaye glares at her purse, hissing, "Shhhhhh!"

And then continues to glare for a minute until it doesn't talk again.

Rory was focused on what she was painting. Yep. Not at all staring off into space or anything.

Sam was staring at the canvas and hoping that maybe he'd suddenly develop a sense of artistic creativity that he'd never had before.

Dean was still preoccupied by what he thought he'd heard when he'd first walked in the classroom, but had managed to start painting anyways.

He glanced over at his brother and saw the still blank canvas.

"Polar bear in a snow storm?" he asked.

Sam glanced over at Dean and snickered. "I don't think I could get away with that description."

[identity profile] saltandammo.livejournal.com 2006-09-18 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
"Sure you could," Dean said, gesturing with his paint brush. "Just put in a couple of dots for eyes..."
likethegun: (i'm smug and satisfied)

"I'd like to turn in something that requires a bit more effort," Sam replied, rolling his eyes.

"Hey, it's all in how you present it." Dean looked at what he had so far and frowned; the car needed to be blacker. "Don't overthink it so much, Sammy. Just paint the first thing that pops into your head."
likethegun: (i'm smug and satisfied)

Re: Talk as you paint.

Sam glanced over at Dean's canvas. "I'm assuming that's what you did?"

"You know, there really is such a thing as being too obsessed with a car," he pointed out, finally settling on starting to cover the bottom of the canvas with green.

Re: Talk as you paint.

"It's a cool car," Dean defended.

"I guess," Sam said casually. "Don't tell Dad I said anything to you, but he hinted that it might be your cool car at some point."

Dean turned to stare at his brother. "You're kidding me."

Summer glanced at her canvas, hoping for some sort of artistic inspiration.

D'anna's never been much of a painter, except, well, with things that weren't paint, but hey, she's game so she took up a brush and set to work.

Painting. Oh good. Sam took a deep breath, dipped her brush in the nearest color, and went to work. She knew she was very bad at realism, so she decided to give abstract a try.
