Good Omens...And Bad: Prophecy in Theory and Practice, Lab 2

Friday, September 15, Period 2

More sandwiches and cookies (some of them might be rum-ginger today), as well as tea and coffee. Aziraphale seems a little subdued today, but he smiles readily enough as the students enter.

"Good morning everyone. Today I like for you to do two things: first, I want each person in turn to share the information you gathered last week about your lab partner. If you didn't find a lab partner...then raise your hand and I will pair you up myself. Second, I'd like for you to each tell me about one form of divination that particularly interests you, and why. There will be no lecture today, but I am always willing to answer your questions. Next week, we'll begin our actual hands-on lab work."

Homework:
Work on your project proposals, which are due next week.

What's your favorite form of divination? (Aziraphale's partial to reading tea leaves, himself. Or maybe that's just drinking tea.)

"Phoebe," Bel said, grinning.

Aziraphale chuckled. "Well, I'm not certain Miss Halliwell is on our list of topics for this term. But perhaps you could give us an idea of exactly what sort of divination she does -- with her permission, of course," he added, nodding toward Phoebe.

Phoebe blushed a bright red and then nodded at Aziraphale. "It's okay."

"I like that Cleo lady that's on late night tv." Blair bounced. "With the accent and the cool clothes? She rocks."

"It interests me because she helps people with her skills and that seems like a good use of her power."

Aziraphale raised an eyebrow, although he didn't express his own opinion about 'that Cleo lady'. Not at this point, anyway.

"Er...yes, I see. Well, Mr Sandburg...er...can you tell us what sort of divination skill she uses? Perhaps crystal gazing, or card reading?"

"Is wearing a turban and lots of jewelry a divination skill?" Blair asked. "I know there's a crystal ball and tarot cards in the commercial, but mostly she just knows."

"Cleo knows it all, child." Blair said with a very bad fake accent. "Did I sound her?"

"Fortune cookie," Marty replied. "You get to know your future and then you get to eat the cookie."

"Interesting choice, Mr Blank. And I do believe we'll actually be covering fortune cookies in one of our lessons."

"I wouldn't call it my favorite, really . . . but I'm mostly interested in prophetic dreams."

Aziraphale smiled at Nadia. "Since of course you're aware we'll be spending time discussion dream interpretation, I hope you'll find the material we cover to be of interest to you. And perhaps useful as well."

"Thank you, sir."

"Psychometry and prophetic dreams."

"Why do I get the feeling dreams are going to be a very popular topic for this class?" Aziraphale chuckled, smiling at Phoebe. "I may have to expand the unit, if there's that much interest."

"Either that or offer an Independent Study...?"

"Um, I don't know about my favorite, but I guess Crystal Ball Gazing is something I'm interested in... And, um, whatever they did at Delphi."

"We'll certainly be covering crystal gazing, and other forms of scrying," Aziraphale replied, expecting Pippi's answer, since she was in possession of a crystal ball.

"What did the Oracle at Delphi do?"

"I think there's value to tarot cards, if the person reading them knows what they're doing," Sam said.

"And that's a very important point, Mr Winchester," Aziraphale agreed. "Anyone can lay the cards in a pattern, but that doesn't mean they'll get a true reading simply by looking at the pictures on the cards. And in fact, this will be one of the first labs we do, so you'll get some experience in how exactly one goes about doing a proper tarot reading."

"Deep meditation," Dawn said, after some thought.

"Intriguing choice," Aziraphale replied. "We won't be spending a great deal of time on the topic, but we will discuss it toward the end of the term. May I ask why you chose that particular method, rather than some of the, er...flashier styles?"

"It's more honest, I think. It's just you, and whoever chooses to send you the prophecy, or not," she smiled, "and there's so much less stuff to buy."

"Nanny Ogg's wash kettle?" Agnes looked a bit embarrassed by that. "Still, dark water."

Aziraphale nodded reassuringly. "Which actually combines two forms of divination -- the use of a reflective scrying surface, and the use of natural elements. Both of which we'll be discussing in class. Thank you, Miss Nitt."
