Ethics (September 14, 6th period)

If the classroom looked a bit like a discount Swedish furniture store had exploded inside of it, well...at least the projectiles were now easily replaceable.

Which might be a good thing.

Precisely on time, Darth Vader swept into the room and slammed the door firmly behind him.

"Today we talk about lying," he said, his masked face scanning the faces in front of him as he prowled around the classroom.

"Everyone lies," he stated flatly. "To hide things, to manipulate others, to avoid...unpleasantness." There was a definite hint of scorn in his voice at that last example. "In class today, you are required to pair up and only tell the truth." His cape whirled behind him. "And I can tell if you are not. Such disobedience will result in detention."

He paused for a moment. "And I don't believe in that axiom where if you cannot say something nice, you don't say anything at all. I do not require you to be nice. I require you to be honest."

He crossed his arms over his chest. "Name. Place of birth. Classes you are taking," he barked out. "Proceed from there."

"You can." She said with an unsure glance around. She wasn't sure exactly what she should be doing now that her arms were crossed so she just decided to keep them that way.

Tyler fidgeted and decided to get it over with.

"Okay. I was born in Delaware, I'm taking this class, Criminal Justice and science-exclamation-point." He paused and lowered his voice. "I'm called Tyler, but my real name's Jack."

There. The girl with the crossed arms could do whatever she wanted with that.

Maia looked curiously at him when he said he was called Tyler but his real name was Jack. "Why do people call you Tyler?" She said, she kept her voice as low as his when he said it.

"Because that's what I call myself," Tyler said. "It's a very long story. Your turn."

"Ok." She said leaning back in the seat, her arms falling to her lap now. "I'm Maia, I'm from Seattle and I am taking Good omens, Through a Glass Darkly and this."

A flicker of humor flashed through Tyler's eyes. "Do you want to be a spy when you grow up?"

Re: Class exercise!

Maia raised an eyebrow with a hint of a smile. "Of course I do. Wouldn't you want to be one?"

Re: Class exercise!

Tyler had to grin at that. "Actually, I'd love it. I'm not sure i'd be great at being covert, though."

"I bet you could learn it though. Practice blending into a crowd sort of thing. Sit back in a corner and watch." She smiled. "I love to watch people."

Re: Class exercise!

[identity profile] tyler-gone.livejournal.com 2006-09-14 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"I probably could do that," Tyler agreed. "Do you have a favorite place to watch people in town?"

"I go to the park on nice days, sometimes to Caritas on a Saturday night. Sit in a corner booth and just sip on some wine and watch. Do you?"

Re: Class exercise!

[identity profile] tyler-gone.livejournal.com 2006-09-14 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"I hadn't really thought about it, but I can see why Caritas would work," Tyler said. "Plus when he's there, Coach Bluth is fun to bug."

"I don't think I know him. What does he coach?"

Re: Class exercise!

[identity profile] tyler-gone.livejournal.com 2006-09-14 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"He coached basketball, but our season's over," Tyler said. "Our last game was lava'd out. It was very Fandom."

Re: Class exercise!

[identity profile] maias-notebook.livejournal.com 2006-09-14 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Maia laughed, "It is, very Fandom indeed. I was on the wrestling team my first term here. We got molded out. It's a shame to, we could have taken the championship if the mold hadn't taken over all the mats."

"You're kidding," Tyler said reflexively before remembering that they couldn't lie. "Except I guess you can't. Do you spar and stuff? I love a goood fight."

Re: Class exercise!

[identity profile] maias-notebook.livejournal.com 2006-09-14 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"I took a kickboxing class once..." She said as if trying to remember. "I dare say I wouldn't be a very good fighter though. I like to watch them. Boxing and all that, I think it's a really cool sport." She looked thoughtful, "If you get into a good fight, like not one that would lead to detention or anything but an official fight or something. I'd watch."

[identity profile] tyler-gone.livejournal.com 2006-09-14 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
"This school is really nice about letting people spar as logn as we're faiir aboout it," Tyler said, eyes landing on the fight between Alanna and Jamie. "Not like what Alanna and Jamie are doing. So yeah, come to the gym sometime and I'll try to show off for you."

Re: Class exercise!

[identity profile] maias-notebook.livejournal.com 2006-09-14 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Maia nodded, "I'd like that. Is it ok if I ask some friends along?" She didn't know Alanna or Jamie but as her eyes fell to where Tyler was looking, she nodded again.

Tyler thought for a moment. It wasn't like fighting in front of a crowd was anything new to him. "I don't have a problem with that, but let me set up a sparring match and I'll call you."

"That would be really awesome. I'm in the student directory under Rutledge. My friends call me Mai, you can call me that if you'd like. I'm in room 217 as well. What room are you in?"

Re: Class exercise!

[identity profile] tyler-gone.livejournal.com 2006-09-14 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
"311 with Alec," Tyler said. "Do you have a roommate?"

Re: Class exercise!

[identity profile] maias-notebook.livejournal.com 2006-09-14 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
"Not anymore. She moved back home." Maia shrugged. "I like being alone in the room though. It's nice."

Re: Class exercise!

[identity profile] tyler-gone.livejournal.com 2006-09-15 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, it's always nice when Alec spends a night out of the room, but I'm used to having people around," Tyler said. "So what do you think of this class so far?"
