Library [09/14]

Rory opened the library a few minutes early, sweeping in a bit rain-splattered and windblown, but actually smiling.

She settled herself behind the desk, and after straightening the sign displaying the new aides, set to work rereading her favorite passages from The Complete Dorothy Parker.

"Hey, Rory," Bridge says, as he comes in to the library. "Here and reporting for duty." He actually almost salutes.

"Hey, Bridge," Rory replies with a smile. "Congrats, by the way. As you can see, library aide stuff is totally hard work. Really. Do I get to train you?"

"Unless you'd rather foist the job off on someone else?" Bridge says, smiling back.

Rory sighs in a very long-suffering way, and marks her page. "Nah, I'm good for it. Okay, first things first."

She holds up her book, smirking a little in spite of herself. "This? Is called a book. They live here!"

"...I totally knew that part already." Bridge says seriously.

"I like to be thorough," Rory says, getting up. "Okay, no, seriously, come back here and I'll walk you through the card catalog and stuff."

"Yay, card catalogue!" Bridge says, doing as instructed.

Rory showed him the system in careful detail, going over it a couple times just to be sure. "Okay, and we also have SC. Have you ever been back in Special Collections?"

"No," Bridge shakes his head. "I've just heard about it." He adds, wide-eyed.

"It kind of has a rep," Rory says with a nod. "Okay, what you need to know for that is that we wear gloves when we go back there, for the books' sake and our own. And students have to present a note from a teacher, and one of us has to go with them. We'll be taking you all back there at some point, I'm sure, but it can get kind of dangerous."

"Yeah, remembering to wear gloves?" Bridge says, holding up his hands. "Not actually a problem."

"These are different," Rory replies, picking up a pair of dragonhide gloves. "Books could bite through those. Not so much with these."

"Ah," Bridge nods. "Still, I'm used to having to wear gloves. So it's not something I'll forget."

"Which is good because the books hurt when they bite," Rory frowns. "Okay, we keep the really old books, the spellbooks and that kind of thing, anything on another student, and anything pornographic in SC. If it's just, like, magical theory, it's out here. But if it's practical stuff, it's in SC and they need a note from faculty."

She sets the gloves down, and leans against the desk. "And everything's organized like I showed you. Electronic materials are over there, computers are in their little alcoves, and the stacks are divvied up into sections. Am I being confusing at all?"

"It seems pretty straightforward, really." Bridge says.

"Oh! And you get to eat in the library now," she adds. "That's one of the perks. Students really aren't supposed to, but we hang out in here over lunch, and we always have coffee."

"Ooooh, coffee." Bridge grins. "I've had snacks in here, when we had I-Club still running. But yay lunch!"

"That doesn't count," she replies, waving a hand. "Because...it doesn't. I don't know why. But it's more special now."

"Eating lunch in library is more special now, got it," Bridge says with a solemn nod.

"Aaaaaaaand I think that's pretty much it. I think you get a key from Ms. Readman at some point - and usually if you have class or something on your library day, someone will be there during that. I think Ms. Readman's going to be here through sixth period for me," she tells him.

"That's good to know," Bridge says. "Um. Ms. Readman is the person whose voice I didn't recognise from the library office? I haven't actually *met* her yet, which sounds bad because, well, boss-type-person."

"I was hoping they knew that already," Yomiko called from inside her office.

"It's always good to check!" Rory called cheerfully.
