Library [09/14]

Rory opened the library a few minutes early, sweeping in a bit rain-splattered and windblown, but actually smiling.

She settled herself behind the desk, and after straightening the sign displaying the new aides, set to work rereading her favorite passages from The Complete Dorothy Parker.

And now that she was done reading about Edna St. Vincent Millay, she'd picked up The Bell Jar, just to keep with the theme.

"Hey Rory," Isabel said. "I'm reporting for duty!"

Angela nodded to Isabel from where she was shelving books. "Hi, Isabel. Ready to work?"

"I am," she grinned. ~~But first I need to go take a shower and get dressed.~~ "I think this will be fun."

"~~No rush!~~ Most days it is," Angela agreed. "Though there are days when I seriously wonder about this place. Like, once Xander Harris and Logan Echols came in looking for porn in special collecions and didn't come out for a really long time."

"Okay, now that's just way too much information about my former roomie," Isabel chuckled. "Even though, teenage guy, I should expect it. I wish I could tease him about it though. It would be fun to see him flail."

"I completely forgot he was your roommate," Angela said. "Of course, it was Rory's ex-boyfriend. So she was traumatized too."

She frowned. "I tried emailing Xander when I was home last weekend? You know, from the past? Anyhow, that bounced too."

"Don't talk to me about Logan. I'm still holding a small grudge for the bouncing incident." Isabel smiled fondly. " He was the best roomie ever. I was sad when he had to move out. You did send and email? And it bounced? Damn. I guess he really is cut off then. That sucks."

"Bouncing?," Angela asked. "And yeah, looks like. Maybe whatever it is will go away soon." Her eyes were a little sad. "So ... where do you want me to start the tour?"

"Remember back last Spring when Logan did that stupid spell to give himself superpowers? And instead gave the entire school lame powers?" Isabel asked. "My power was the ability to sit on my butt and bounce. I couldn't stop it. It was so far beyond annoying. I was ready to kill him when I found out."

She looked around the library, "It doesn't matter to me. Paperwork maybe? In case some needs a library card?"

"The first thing the new librarian did ~~handwavily~~ was make it so everybody got a card when they enrolled," Angela said happily. "Which is good, it means I never need to ask anyone if they're a chosen one again. One of the old employees had this thing about that."

"But in case you get a midterm enrollment or someone loses their card, the forms are here." Angela pulled them out of a file cabinet. "It's just name, grade and residence. Oh, and the forms for lost and overdue books are behind them, see?"

"That makes sense," Isabel nodded, making a mental note of where the forms were kept. "Of course I'm sure at some will turn up looking for another card because they lost theirs. Okay, so far it all seems logical. What's next?"

"I'm sure people have lost them altrady, yeah. So -- ou can see the books," Angela said, pointing. "But A/V stuff is in a storage room so it doesn't walk away. If someone wants a movie or whatever, they need to ask us." She gestured Isabel to follow her into the A/V room behind the counter. "I'll show you how it's organized."

"Okay, just a quick question. By walking away, you mean walking with help. Not walking away on legs walking away right?" Isabel raised an eyebrow as she followed along, "This is Fandom. I want to make sure I'm not dealing with sentient equipment."

Angela grinned at that. "It's possible, but yeah, I meant stealing. As far as I know all the sentient things are in Special Collections. I don't think we even have that many."

Angela pointed out ~~handwavy~~ shelves of videos, DVDs and CDs. "There are stations for people to watch this stuff in the back of the library," she explained, walking to them. "They have manuals, no one's ever had a problem using them."

"It looks like a pretty decent collection. People can borrow this as well? Just like library books?" she asked.

"They're only supposed to keep them overnight, but same idea," Angela confirmed. "I usually come back in here for something to watch when it gets slow."

"That is one thing about it here -- some days everything is crazy, other days it's just you and the books and homework for seven hours. Do you know which days you're working yet?"

"Cool, I never realized. It'll save me from waiting for Netflix to deliver." Isabel shrugged, "I don't mind reading so I'm sure I'll be able to keep myself entertained. I'm not one hundred percent sure when I'll be working ~~Tuesdays~~. But my most days I only have one class so it should be a problem."

"There should be a bigger video rental place on the island," Angela said firmly. "And yeah, it seems like our schedules are a lot more open now that classes only meet once a week."

"So do you feel up to Special Collections now, or do you want to look at the books? I know you've been back in SC before."

"I'm pretty familiar with where the books are located. So maybe Special Collections? Although I do have to go to class next period." She made a face of distaste. "Ethics. Do you think there'll be enough time? Or should I come back after class?"

Angela echoed Isabel's face. "Rory's in that class too," she noted. "It's kind of a big tour, so it might be better if you came back during seventh ~~so you aren't stuck with SP while I'm at work~~."

"How's ethics," she asked tenatively.

"Sounds like a plan, and the distraction might be welcome." Isabel shrugged. "It probably wouldn't be half as bad if I didn't know what he did. But knowing that, and with his scary, imposing attitude, and the way he's approaching the subject? It's going to be a long semester."

"Principal Washburn told Marty that it was just some weird rumor, about him and Anakin," Angela said. "I'm trying really hard to believe she wouldn't lie."

"Did you ever hear about the last ethics teacher? I swear, they must advertise for crazies to teach that class."

"Personally I'm going with my gut. I believe Luke," she said quietly. "I'm not psychic or anything. But you can just feel evil coming off of him."

Isabel shook her head, "No I didn't. I did hear about the crazy vampire psych teacher though."

"I'm avoiding him," Angela said, just as quietly. "I have to believe this school wouldn't hire another murderer. If we did, I'm not sure anything in this world could keep me here."

"The old ethics teacher was a very nice woman who just had no business teaching. It was like class was her therapy session. She did this class on rape that was awful, her girlfriend was 17, and she failed half the class, practically. And she had us do a master/slave exercise that was truly freaky."
