Aw, why not, Chef?

Classes or no classes on Wednesdays, Anders had to eat at some point. There were hot dogs and mac and cheese piled up on a bed of salad on one plate on his tray, and Jello jiggling in an almost provocative, or possibly mentally scarring, manner on a separate plate. He was six trade paperback volumes into Unknowns in Eden by now and was reading volume 6, not-so-subtly concealed inside a three-ring binder, as he ate.

Nadia happened to walk behind Anders, thus spotting the trade. "I didn't know you read comics,"

"I don't usually," Anders said. "All those superheroes and stuff? I mean, I live with a bunch of 'em already, why do I need to read about them? But this series is different."

He craned his head back to look. "Hi, Nadia."

"Hi, Anders." Nadia moved in to peer over his shoulder. "What makes this one different? Other than that the waist size of the women is actually, you know, realistic?"

"It's just about people," he said with a shrug. "I mean, yeah, there's the whole mob storyline with Marcy Driver and Kanteen, but mostly it's about everyday stuff. Plus I like the little random things the artist throws into the background in places."

"Like what?" Nadia peered closer. "And at least the mob is technically defeatable."

"Like this," Anders said, pointing to a panel where a trash can was walking around beeping like one of the little robots from Space Battles. "I guess I can just identify with them a lot more than I can with all the superheroes with the powers."

"I get that. Sometimes it's a little weird, knowing that most of the people in this school could physically break you, no matter how well trained you are."

Yeah, this might be something Nadia has been thinking about a lot.

It might also be something that's been bothering Anders for a while. "Does that ever really get to you?" he asked abruptly. "One of the new kids picked me up off the floor with one hand last week, Lords know Pippi and Molly could toss me around like a rubber ball . . . I thought I was in pretty good shape, but man."

"I spent a year learning how to fight and move my body to the absolute best of my ability. I could probably take or escape anyone of average human strength. Or even a bit above average. But I still get my butt kicked by almost everyone around here."

"You've got a head start on me at least," Anders offered. "It's still weird, though."

"Seriously."

"And now I wonder if the kids with powers read superhero comics because they identify with them better . . . and if they end up yelling at the comics that they're getting it all wrong."

"That's why I watch AKA these days. It's fun to yell at Perth for being dumb."

Anders snickered. "That's why I watch baseball, myself."

Nadia nodded. "I've never actually tried watching baseball. I can't imagine it being as much fun as football."

"Now you sound like Conner," Anders said, amused. "It's not everyone's game. Sometimes it . . . grows on you."

"Now, see, if they played it with a fake leg. . . ."

"Because the people running the olympics aren't as smart as we are."
