One was the the Ch'in dynasty and the other the Han. These two dynasties united China and also transformed it. The old hereditary nobility was replaced with a new aristocracy based on military merit and a universal draft was introduced. Peasants were liberated from attachment to the land, owned by the former lords, and were granted ownership of the land, for which they had to pay taxes. The transformed China into a wealthy and powerful country.
