Criminal Justice [1st Period, Tuesday

"Good morning," V greeted quietly from the shadows when everyone had arrived. "Today we shall discuss the Judicial system of the United States, as well as due process."

He continued on in a low voice for a few minutes, hitting high points like the Miranda warning, trial by jury and the fifth amendment to the United States' Constitution, and stressing the fact that while their homes may be found in other places, the States is their home for the time being and thus is the system with which to chiefly concern themselves.

"However," V continued, "there are very definitely two sides to the law, and at least two parties to consider. Hence...we're going to engage in an activity."

He gestured expansively. "One half of you will be criminals who have been apprehended for a crime of your choosing. The rest of you will be the arresting officers, of sorts. Accused students? You are to attempt to escape arrest via whatever means necessary - nonviolent, please, but lying, cheating, conniving, negotiating...all of these are encouraged. And arrestors? You are to be fair, but stand by your principles and do your best to keep them from escaping, please."

He glanced at the roster for scarcely a second before saying, "If your surname, or only name if you have a single name, ends in an N or an R, you are a criminal. The rest of you are officers. Please pair up."

[Wait for OCD, plz OCD up! I am crashing very soon, will be around late morning/early afternoon EDT and then steadily through the day. But this is pretty much student/student interaction, so have fun, guys.

ETA: Due to various things, we're shorter on cops than we are on robbers. So extra robbers, please team up, or crash a thread to help one of the others escape. My apologies for apparently not being able to count or something.]

Tyler couldn't actually tell where Jack was going with this. "Right," he said, managing not to let his uncertainty creep into his voice.

Jack figured the best way to keep Tyler from trying to escape being arrested was to keep things light, and keep the spectre of actual arrest and detainment as nebulous as possible.

To that end, he said casually, "But a smart young man like you, you must know something about how the painting disapeared. And imagine how good it will feel to know you've helped the police, not to mention the added bonus of clearing your own name, if you tell me all about it."

Tyler looked skeptically at Jack. "There's nothing I can tell you. So you're the good cop. Who's the bad cop?"

Jack was totally unfamiliar with the concept of 'god cop-bad cop', so he blinked a bit in surprise. "No bad cop, just two guys having a talk about a missing painting." Grinning slightly, he added, "Anyone would think talking to the police wasn't exactly a new experience for you."

Tyler balled his hands in the pockets of his jeans. "Me telling you about my rap sheet -- if I had one -- won't help you get that painting back."

He paused. "Make it worth my while and I'll talk."

Jack was impressed at how well Tyler was getting into the role. "I might be able to arrange something," he said slowly. "That painting getting stolen was kind of embarrassing for certain higher-ups in this city. Especially since it disappeared off the wall in the middle of the annual ball. Which was very impressive," he added. "What did you have in mind?"

"You'd be surprised how little people notice if you're dressed as a waiter to do it," Tyler said, eyes sparkling. he was defiinitely having fun with this. "And as for what I want, how about we keep it simple -- I let you know what I know, you get the painting back, and nobody goes to jail. The painting's not even hurt. Much."

Jack was definitely not cut out to be a cop, because his immediate thought was that it was a perfect solution. But he made an effort to remember the lecture. "I can't make any definite guarantees, but I like what I'm hearing so far." He let admiration and a touch of awe creep into his voice as he said, "Even dressed as a waiter, I would have thought getting it down would have needed a scaffold - or at least a ladder - unless whoever took it can fly."

Tyler raised his brow and leaned in closer."You think at this school it would be a problem to find someone who could fly? Or jump high enough that it's the next best thing?"

Trying very hard not to laugh, Jack asked, "So you're telling me the painting was stolen by a giant frog in a tuxedo?"

"It sounds so unlikely when you say it that way," Tyler said dryly. "It was a frog-man."

His eyes might have slid over the Peter Parker.

Jack followed Tyler's gaze and raised an eyebrow in surprise. Peter didn't look like a frog. Returning his attention to Tyler, he gave a disappointed sigh. "See, here's the thing. You said you didn't know anything about the painting, and now it sounds like you do. Which means I'm going to have to take you in for questioning," he said, sounding deeply regretful but resigned to the situation.

Tyler bit his lower lip. "But if you take me in, you'll never find out where it is."

[identity profile] anextimeagent.livejournal.com 2006-09-13 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
"You might be right," Jack conceded. "But then again, you might not. And hey," he added cheerfully, "You might get the chance to plea bargain for the location, seeing as you obviously know where it is."

"No, but-" Tyler paused. "See, if I-" He stammered, threw his hands up. "Okay, you got me. Gonna cuff me?"

[identity profile] anextimeagent.livejournal.com 2006-09-13 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
"Nah." Jack grinned. "I don't think you need it, do you? Besides, it's a bit undignified. I will read you your Miranda rights, though." Which he proceeded to do, word for word off his notes, finishing with, "If that makes sense to you?"

Re: Pair up! [09/12/06]

[identity profile] tyler-gone.livejournal.com 2006-09-13 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
"It does," Tyler confirmed. "I've heard it on every cop show ever, anyhow."

[identity profile] anextimeagent.livejournal.com 2006-09-13 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
"Then consider yourself arrested," Jack said. "And I've never heard it before today, but it's kind of interesting." Now that the exercise was over, there was one question he had to ask. "Is Peter really a frog-man?"

Re: Pair up! [09/12/06]

[identity profile] tyler-gone.livejournal.com 2006-09-13 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
"Not really," Tyler said, wiggling out of it. "It was just something that came to my mind."

[OOC: I don't know how public Peter is about the superhero thing, and I don't want to spread secrets.]

[identity profile] anextimeagent.livejournal.com 2006-09-13 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Jack may have looked disappointed. "It was good, though. Anywhere but here, and it probably would have distracted me enough to forget about the mysteriously vanishing painting."

[ooc: no worries - and sorry I disappeared - got called to a meeting.]

"That is the problem with this school," Tyler said. "Whatever the story is, it's probably true."

"It makes life exciting, though. And that's what's important." Jack grinned and cocked his head at Tyler. "That was fun. And convinced me I never want to be a cop."
