"Thank you." he said. "It, it happened a while ago."

"I have to say that I don't know what's it's like to lose a parent," she paused, "Even though I nearly lost my mother several years ago, I didn't like that experience,"

Was the sorrow in his voice really guilt? Well maybe a little.

"I was in a coma for about a year after it happened. I woke up to find out everything had changed."

And actually it had. For better, for a while. Then it'd all come crashing down.

Naomi listened quietly and then said, "my mother was on an away mission several years ago, there was a bad ion storm and the shuttle she was on was forced to crash land on a planet, they were buried under several layers of rock ... they never told me that my mother's shuttle had crashed, they never told me that there was the possibility she could be dead along with the other two crewmembers she was with, who were also like my family ... I only found out when I went up to the bridge when I was trying to find my uncle, what I saw on the view screen wasn't particulary comforting and I turned around and fled ... I later learned why my uncle kept the truth from me but until then but I had never been so scared to lose someone close to me, my mother and the other two crewmembers were rescued with only mere minutes to spare but it still came as a shock,"

Billy swallowed. He drew on his feelings of betrayal, when his father ultimately rejected, and tried to kill him.

Sadly this meant that in addition to loss, his voice might have come out, a little bit bitter.

"It's never easy when you lose someone." he said. "Or, come close."

He wondered where his mother was.

Naomi nodded, "I know having a career in Starfleet is a risk from the minute you step into the academy ... it's the same for a lot of careers, but it doesn't make acceptance of death any easier,"

"It's all fine and good for parents to take that risk, to accept it. But the kids don't exactly get a choice do they."

He had to close his eyes against the anger at his father that was coming. No, that was always there. And more.

"No ..." Naomi shook her head softly, "I guess not," her voice was a little saddened, "even though mom didn't know she was pregnant with me until after Voyager was lost in the Delta Quadrant, if she had known she would have stayed behind with dad on Deep Space Nine instead of accepting the post," she paused, "but then again Voyager's getting lost in the Delta Quadrant was an accident, I guess my heritage had a part to play in the fact that it took mom so long to discover that she was pregnant ... traditional human/ktarian pregnancies last nearly two years after all,"

Billy almost choked on his drink. "Good lord, two years?"

He recovered. "Sorry, didn't think I could be surprised anymore."

Naomi smiled, "yeah it's ... unique for a lack of a better word," she replied, "I know what you mean about not being surprised anymore,"

"of course I've thought that before..." Billy said thoughtfully.
