[Media Studies & Communication: Week 2]

There's a coffee machine in the back of the room - a little dusty, but he'd had to dig it out of one of the closets - and cups, cream and sugar for those who want them. There's also a table by the door with an informational handout for everyone to take.

Logan is sitting on his desk again, the screens off today, and he waits until everyone's taken their seats before beginning.

"So, like we began with the question last week, we're going to be delving a little into your personal relationships with media, ripping off using the format from a radio program called the 'Desert Island Discs'.

"Imagine you're a castaway on a desert island. Now imagine that you're allowed to take four pieces of music with you." He smiles slightly. "I realize that, for some people at least, your tastes are always changing, but this is just for the assignment, so try not to overthink it.

"In addition to the four pieces of music, you get to have one book - not counting the Bible or any of the works of Shakespeare - and one luxury item which has to be inanimate and have no practical use.

"That's the first part of the assignment. Go ahead and take a few minutes to write that down, get it on paper."

Logan lets the class do that, getting himself a cup of coffee while he waits. After about fifteen minutes, he returns to the head of the class. "Okay, now we pair off. Find a classmate and trade lists. Once you've done that, take turns discussing items on your lists, why you made them, why they're important to you - I don't expect you to necessarily be familiar with what your classmate's choices are, but have an open mind, engage in some discussion here.

"Lastly, write a paragraph about the assignment. Do you think media is an important part of your life? Does what you listen to, what you read, really say that much about you as a person?"

[OOC: Wait for OCD! HAVE AT. And sorry about last week guys - it was a very bad day for me and I dropped the ball. You guys deserve more than I gave you. The class assignments are, of course, optional - especially the paragraph - but have fun with it!

Also, I'll be on for a wee bit longer tonight, but back at about 9am PST tomorrow when I get to work. After that, I'll be on most of the day.]

"Only a little while longer," Rory declared. "I started when I was like, three."

D'anna finished up her list and looked about for someone to work with.

[ooc: As she ought, though her play will soon be off to take a nap soon because I'm about to go face first in the keyboard.]

After class had ended, D'anna stopped by the professor's desk.

"Excuse me, professor?" she said sheepishly.

"Yeah, that would be me. Hi." She gave a half smile in return. Because a whole smile would be weird while she was trying to get her stuff back while at the same time not remind the teacher that she'd skipped out on class last week. "I was wondering, did anyone happen to turn in a notebook or a coffee mug last week after class?"

"And see, we're both actually pretty tall," Rory added. "So that stuff about coffee stunting growth? Dumb."

Sam sailed through the music and book sections of the assignment, but trying to come up with something impractical? Much tougher.

Bye-Bye, Jo Dee Messina
Joy to the World, Three Dog Night
Cello Suites, Bach

Book: A Brief History of Time, Stephen Hawking

Item: My father's dog tags

Elizabeth smiled and waved. "Hey, D."

[[ooc: *pats* Know that feeling far too well omg!]]

Re: Make your lists

[identity profile] notcalledlizzie.livejournal.com 2006-09-11 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Elizabeth tried not to smile at the idea that she'd be trapped in the middle of the ocean, far away from home.

Music:
1. KT Tunstall - Heal Over
2. Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
3. Tchaikovsky - Romeo and Juliet
4. Holst - The Planets (Neptune)

Book:
Vojna i mir - Tolstoi (War and Peace - Tolstoy)

Elizabeth paused, deciding that her father's pocketwatch could be considered a practical item. Technically.

Item: Laptop

[identity profile] ihatedenmark.livejournal.com 2006-09-12 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
It's possible that Hamlet took far too long to think up a list, but that could hardly be considered a surprise.

3. "Everybody Hurts Sometimes", REM
4. "Summer Girls", LFO "Ave Maria", Mozart
