Monday, September 11, Period 1

This morning the table is set with scones, tea and coffee, just as it was last week. Once the class is settled in, Aziraphale begins to speak.

“Today’s discussion is on the major historical figures associated with prophecy. As I am only familiar with Earth history of my own world, I apologize if I leave out someone you feel ought to be on the list. You are welcome, however, to add to the discussion and introduce the class to anyone you feel has been overlooked. And also, do keep in mind that this is only a listing of the most notable figures. A discussion of everyone throughout history who has been considered a seer of some sort would take far longer than a single class period. Please also keep in mind that I am not attempting to put any sort of seal of approval on these people. Whether or not they were ‘true’ prophets is not the point of this discussion.”

In-class assignment:
If you haven't already done so outside of class, form groups of three or four and begin discussing ideas for your group project. Your proposals are due on Friday of next week.

Homework assignment:
Write a brief essay about an experience you had with a person who was connected in some way with prophecy – a seer, a fortune-teller, the subject of a prophecy, etc. This person does not have to be a “professional” prophet, neither do you have to have believed in the truthfulness of the prophecy. For example, you could write about the time you had your palm read at the fair, or the time you met the author of a book on prophetic dreams, or about an oracle you once visited, or a religious seer whose prophecy affected you personally. You have two weeks to complete this assignment, as it will not be due until September 25.

Before the class departed, Aziraphale informed them that he had two announcements to make. "First..." He looked a bit disappointed. "I will need some form of written excuse from Mr Constantine, in order to excuse his absence last week. Second, and this is much better news: we will be embarking on a field trip with another class in November, to Las Vegas. You'll be receiving permission slips to be signed within the next couple of weeks."

"Why would I admit that when you're not always right?"

"Name one time I've been wrong since we got here," Dean asked.

Sam thought about that for a little longer than necessary. "Just because you haven't been wrong about things here doesn't mean you've never been wrong," he argued.

Dean smirked. "I'm never going to steer you wrong, Sammy," he said, the words coming out more serious than he'd meant them to.

Sam gave Dean a genuine smile at that. "I know you won't," he replied just as seriously, before smirking. "Unless steering me wrong will get me laid."

"If it gets you laid, then it's not steering you wrong," Dean told him.

"I don't know if that can be a universal argument," Sam replied, laughing. "Not everyone you try to pimp me out to might be the best choice."

"Well if you put yourself out there I wouldn't have to," Dean pointed out, then grinned and spread his hands. "Which you have now -- finally -- so..."

"I know, and it couldn't possibly have taken me any longer," Sam replied, smirking. "So, this means you're going to back off and leave my love life alone, right?" he asked, sounding slightly sarcastic.

"As long as you treat Dawn right," Dean told him. "Otherwise I may havve to kick your ass." He grinned suddenly. "Dawn wants to go threaten Alec, so it's only fair I threaten you."

"Dawn wants to...I have to see that," Sam said firmly, laughing. "And I'm going to treat her right. I'm determined to not screw this up," he added, even more firmly. "So wait, does that mean you told Dawn about you and Alec?"

"Yeah. It went pretty well," Dean said, sounding faintly surprised.

"Good. I don't want things to be weird between the two of you." Sam smiled at Dean. "And she doesn't seem to mind Alec, so I guess it makes sense that she took it well."

Dean chuckled. "Yeah, you're the only one with the feud to the death thing going on with him." He paused. "Well you and maybe Jaye now. Though I think it's me she'd rather see dead than Alec." He gave his brother a wry slightly twisted smile. "This staying in one place and having relationships thing can get complicated."

"Whoa, what did you do to Jaye?" Sam asked. "As the reigning leader of the boykissy revolution, I thought she'd be pleased to find out about the two of you."

"Yeah, you and me both. But apparently she'd decided they were going to be exclusive now. Mind you, she hadn't got around to telling Alec this when it all blew up." He tried to keep his voice to calm and casual but some of his frustration leeched through.

"Well, if Alec didn't know what she wanted, and you didn't know, then you guys didn't do anything wrong," Sam said logically.

"Exactly! Thank you!" Dean said, happy that Sammy grasped the basic facts so quickly. "But somehow this is all my fault according to Jaye."

Sam thought about it some more and shrugged. "Either Jaye is crazy, or Alec lied about the fact that she didn't say anything to him. Or maybe she liked him even more than she was willing to admit," he guessed.

"Yeah, probably a little bit of (a) and a whole lot of (c)," Dean said, grimacing.

"Sorry," Sam said sympathetically. "If it makes you feel any better, I think Buffy would be happy to help Jaye in taking you out if they could get me too."

"Talking to her didn't go well, huh?" Dean asked sympathetically.

"It could have gone worse. No acts of violence were committed," he replied. "But I think I made her cry, and honestly, I would have rather been hit."

"Yeah, I get that. Sometimes you gotta do things that suck."

"I know. And it's better this way - she's free to date someone who really cares about her, and I...well." He smiled softly, thinking about Dawn again.
