Gwynn shook her head. "I've heard about it, but I know very little. I keep thinking about asking someone to show me what one is."

There were things that Pete had managed to find that he wouldn't mind showing her. . . .

"Darlin', I think this may be the beginnin' of something beautiful."

Ohhhh, but there went his eyes again. . . .

"Pete, you have me quite intrigued."

Gwynn was liking this guy, which is why her smack wasn't nearly as hard as it should be.

"Peeeeete...."

"Yes'm!" Pete jerked his head back up and smiled. "My apologies again, darlin'. Force o' habit."

"Yes'm. May I join you at your table for this mid-day meal?"

Gwynn gave him a smile and a nod. "I'd be delighted if you did so."

"Why thank you, Gwynn." Look at her face, look at her face, look at her . . . neck . . . shoulders . . . bre-- He jerked his head up all on his own and smiled. "I'm honored."

Gwynn's lips twitched as she noticed his eyes, but said nothing... and didn't smack him. After all, he had brought his eyes back to her face all on his own this time.

"So what do you think of Fandom, Pete?"

"Well, I'm sure I do not yet know. It's a very odd place."

Gwynn nodded.

"I agree with you there. I've been here three months and I'm still dreadfully confused about it. Two nights ago, there were several odd beings putting on a show in the common room on the third floor."

"Odd bein's? How do you mean?"

"The older students called them Gremlins... and there was a silver box thing that seemed very friendly. No one else in the room seemed shocked by this."

"A friendly . . . box. You're goin' to have to show this stuff to me. . . . I have not yet been here long enough to become acquainted with the many fascinatin' new devices they've got lyin' about."

"If we see the box again, I will definitely point him out to you," she promised. "So what is it like where you come from?"

"Dusty, mostly. You never been to California?"

Gwynn shook her head. "No, this is the first time I've been out of Briton."

"Well, it probably looks all diff'rent now, anyway."

"We could probably manage a trek to go and check out your California."

Gwynn had little concept of how far away this California was... or how it might look different.

"Yeah, well, I'd need to figure out how to get me a horse, first."

This made Gwynn perk up.

"Horse? You ride?"

Pete looked confused. "'Course I ride. What self-respectin' person doesn't?"

Gwynn shook her head. "Very few people here seem to ride," Gwynn said woefully. "Pippi is the only other person I know here that knows anything about horses."

"My 'older brother' seemed surprised every time I brought up gettin' a pachyderm as well." Pete shook his head. "A man just ain't a man if he don't have his horse and his piece."
