Biology, Tuesday, second period

Elliot was bouncing on her toes a little as she waited for her class to file in. There were long tables for students to sit at in the front of the room, and a cart with several microscopes and prepared slides near the back. On the side near a window sat a cage with two cheerful rats, Ronnie and Nancy.

Once more or less everyone was here, she started talking.

"Hi! I am Elliot Reid -- you can call me Dr. Reid or Elliot, it doesn't really matter -- and welcome to Biology. I'm going to start by passing out your syllabus.

"Biology, as some of you may know, is the branch of science dealing with the study of life. It talks about things like the characteristics, classification, and behaviors of organisms, how species come into existence, and the interactions they have with each other and with the natural environment.

"Biology tries to explain things like birth, growth, aging, death and decay of living organisms and why organisms look like their parent. And it studies other things too, such as lactation, metamorphosis, egg-hatching, healing and tropism. On a wider scale of time and space, biologists have studied domestication of animals and plants, the wide variety of living organisms-- biodiversity -- changes in living organisms over time -- evolution -- extinction, speciation, social behaviour among animals, and so on.

"This isn't really a subject I can cover in 14 50-minute sessions. A lot of people study it their whole lives. But I'll do my best to give you guys at least a basic overview of the subject, okay?"

"I'm going to have you introduce yourselves, and then I have a handout about cells. Please try to read is sometime this week. The microscopes have been set up to do look at onion root cells to show you guys the life cycle of the cell. You can do the experiment in pairs or alone, and I'll be around to answer questions."

Willow checked on Ronnie and Nancy before she sat down. While Dr. Reid talked, she took copious notes.

It's the beginning of the year so Isabel still has some enthusiasm. She took lots of notes.

Teddy waves at Isabel, slightly out of breath from running here.

"Hi! I didn't realize you had Bio as well."

Teddy sighed and sat down, hiding his face with his hands. What kind of crappy shapes-hifting abilities don't let you hide a blush?

"Neither did I, until I went back to my room and noticed I had it written on my schedule and had to run back here."

"Oops," she chuckled. "It's the first week, that's allowed. And you're lucky, Dr. Reid is really cool. She taught First Aid this summer during camp."

Parker's taking notes, and frowning, but so far, it all seems pretty straightforward.

"So how was the lake?" Isabel asked as they made their way to the microscopes.

Parker looked up, and grinned. "Hey! And yeah, I haven't seen you since I got back, have I. It was great. Very quiet, relaxing. I had a lot of time to think. How was your week before the invasion of the new people got out of hand?"

"Good, I'm glad you enjoyed it." Isabel shrugged, "It was pretty mellow, I kept to my room mostly. I wasn't in the mood to deal with all the new people. Although I did wind up cooking for half the student body last night."

"Damn, I missed from you again? I'm never around when that happens!" Parker pouted. "Leftovers? I was studying, I swear. Mostly."

"There were a few. Check the fridge in the fourth floor common room. Although I make no promises. It's like ravenous hordes have moved in," Isabel laughed. "So you were mostly studying? What else was taking up your time?"

"Thinking. Planning." Parker smiled, then looked thoughtful. "Remembering. It's been... a weird damn week."

"Yeah, tell me about it," she nodded. "Although Jack and I were figuring out how we can take over Mexico if you're interested."

"Always! What's the strategy? Small invasion? Coup d'etat?"

"Actually it currently involves Cedric and I running away together but bringing Jack and Greg along as our cabana boys," Isabel explained. "I'm not sure exactly what we're going to do next but I think it involved Jack being charming."

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2006-09-06 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, of *course* it does," Parker said, facepalming a little. "You have to play to a team's strengths. Can I bring a cabana boy? I swear, you won't even know he's there."

Re: General Class Stuff, Biology, 9/5

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2006-09-06 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
"Of course," she nodded. "Everyone needs a cabana boy. Although I doubt Jarod actually counts as a boy. Unless there's a newbie you're tormenting?"

Re: General Class Stuff, Biology, 9/5

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2006-09-06 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
"Jarod is *not* a boy. But he can be a cabana guy, if he has to." Parker grinned wickedly and added, "Several. Although none I want to take to Mexico. Have you met the Angel clone yet?"

"Very briefly," she said. "What did you think of him?"

Elizabeth listened attentively, writing down detailed notes.

The girl who hates science is now sitting here with slightly wide eyes and trying to understand all the words. Well, this class should be interesting.

Peter listened to the lecture and took notes. He had to make sure his bio notes were as good as his other science notes, after all.

Dana listened intently, only being distracted every now and again...
