Cross Species Communications - Monday - 7th Period (Week 1)

She quite liked this new fangled white board, it wasn't dusty at all. So she could be sure that chalk wouldn't mar her smart black dress with the shiny brass buttons. Her freshly starched apron crackled as she turned to regard each student as they entered and took their seat. She was looking from student to student searchingly, as if she was trying to decide if she liked them or not. Students who passed near her would note she smelled faintly of newly made toast.

Finally she closed her eyes, inhaled deeply through her nose, and nodded.

They'll do.

"Good day children." she said. "I am Mary Poppins and I am hear to teach you Beginning and Intermediate Creature Languages. Or, as the class has been dubbed this year, 'Cross Species Communications'."

"I have here a description of the lessons, from the previous teacher, Professor Morphius. We will be covering some languages that were introduced last year. When that is the case the students who took that class last year, and I do mean all of you, will assist the beginning students. My Teacher's Assistant is Walter Dornez. Walter? Will you be so kind as to pass out the papers with the Class Rules please sign the paper and turn it in."

Mary stood up, she appeared to have a tape measure in her hands.

"As you turn it in please state your name and tell us a little something about why you are taking this class. After which, we will see how you measure up..."

She pulled a bit of tape measure out and let it snap back.

"After every one has introduced themselves, you may all go early."

"I'm Schrodinger!" Schro said brightly. "And I'm taking this class because... well..." he touched his cat ears. "Should be pretty obvious."

"Indeed." Mary said pleasantly. "Chin up now."

She pulled the tape measure up from where the toe of her shiny button up boot held it to the floor and measured Schrodinger.

Bringing the measurement up to read she said, "Keep an eye on this one."

She tilted her head at the cat-boy and raised an eyebrow.

"Schrodinger. Now that Walter, Molly, and Stark have had a chance to say something in a creature language, I would like you to pick one and venture a guess as to what they might have said."

Walter stood up, even though he'd already met Miss Poppins and been measured. "I'm Walter Dornez. I took this class in the Spring and I'm back because my employer chose the class for me, but I would be here anyway because I found it very useful."

Mary measured Walter, again.

"Outwardly, fastidious and well mannered..." she read, not finishing.

"Walter, please say something in the Creature Language of your choice. Don't bother to translate it please."

"Carmela Rodriguez," Carmela introduces herself. "And I'm taking this class because I love languages of any kind."

Mary nods her approval to the young girl's answer.

Carmela's measurement reads, "Tries to keep her brother out of trouble, but often finds herself in the middle of it."

"Naomi Wildman," Naomi said, "I'm taking this class because I've always found learning languages fascinating, I haven't had the opportunity to learn that many though,"

"Polite and capable, but shy and nervous." Mary read.

"Naomi, would you like to venture a guess the language Walter used and what he said?"

"I'm Lana Lang," Lana said with a smile. "I'm here because I find the idea of being able to understand and communicate with animals fascinating."

"I'm Cedric Diggory, ma'am. I took a class similar to this back in my former school but it was more about care of creatures rather than communication."

Ranma appears to be watching Schrodinger very carefully, and also keeping himself as far away as possible from him. "I'm Ranma Saotome. And I'm not sure why I'm in this class..." he mumbbles the last bit. "..But I guess telling cats to leave me alone might be a good skill.."

"Willow Rosenberg," Willow said. "I'm here because I have a lot of friends who are animals, and it'd be nice to be able to speak to them in their language. Do you think we'll be learning turtle this semester, Miss Poppins?"

She secretly hoped that Frog would be one of the animal languages covered.

Something about Professor Poppins brought out the good British schoolgirl in her.

After a while, Luna sort of just happened to be in the correct place to be measured. It certainly didn't seem as though she meant to be there, but she was and wasn't raising objections to being measured. Though, in a few years time, an editorial opinion piece on the subject would appear in the Quibbler.

"Oh, hello. I am Luna Lovegood." She stared off into space as she spoke. "I selected this course because one can never learn too much, and the creature course at my former school was rubbish."
