Interstellar Relations, 6th Period, Monday Afternoon
A woman of medium height, capped with long, layered, auburn hair stood at the front of the classroom as the students entered. She leant against the desk with her arms folded and smiled warmly -- in that teacher kind of way -- watching as they selected their seats. Promptly at two o'clock, she cleared her throat and adjusted the dark-rimmed glasses perched on her nose. "Good afternoon," she said, "and welcome to Interstellar Relations. I am Professor Roslin. I hope you all had an excellent summer and are ready to get back to work.
"As you might have read in your class description, we are going to explore the foreign policy processes of several forms of governments and how those processes interact with one another. Examples include the Colonial quorum system -- which I've discovered is fairly unique; a constitutional monarchy; a large-body parliamentary system; and we'll touch briefly on 20th Century Earth systems as well.
"Today, however, we're going to just spend a little time getting to know one another." Reaching behind her, she withdrew a stack of index cards, these from her own stash, complete with clipped corners. She stood before each row and handed a small stack to the first person, indicating that they should take one, passing them on. "On these cards, I'd like your names, a way I can reach you, what type of social studies classes you've had before, and one small thing you'd like me to know about you. Once you're done, I'd appreciate it if the first person in each row could collect them and hand them to me. We'll then go around the room, introducing one another so that I can put faces with all these names."
The class continued. As the clock ticked closer to 2:50, Roslin began to wrap up the discussion. "All right, everyone. Thank you for your participation. It was lovely to meet you all, and I look forward to seeing you next week -- same time, same place. And, provided all goes well with the repro machine, I should have your syllabus ready by then." She smiled. "Please feel free to see me after class if you have any questions."
She paused, eyes glancing over them. "Okay, go on! Get out of here." Waving her hands a bit, she chuckled, remembering what it had once been like, being a student longing for the end of the day.
[OOC: Okay, folks, I'm still out of town at the con, so my responses are going to be extremely limited till I get home late tomorrow night. Slow play, unfortunately, will have to be the order of the day. The syllabus will be ready as soon as I can get home to my own texts and make sure I have the generic names for the systems down. Thanks! Please wait for the OCD. OCD up!]
