First Aid Event, Danger Shop, Tuesday Afternoon

The Danger Shop was arranged for students to practice first aid, with
workstations, CPR dummies, and a wide variety of medical supplies. Out
of a combination of fear of being known as crazy badger teacher
forever and a lack of need, Elliot hadn't engaged the computer, so --
in a novel twist -- everything in the room was real.

She stood on a platform at the front of the room with the other
instructors, waiting for all of the students to file in. When it
seemed like no one else was coming in, she started to talk, glancing
occasionally at some notecards in one hand.

"Hi, thanks for coming out. This is the big first aid shindig, or 'how
to make it through your first semester at Fandom without dying.' I am
Elliot, Dr. Reid, -- whatever -- and I am teaching biology and health
this term. We're going to introduce ourselves and give some basics,
and then there are stations for you to learn first aid techniques. And
we'll be around all afternoon for questions."

"Alanna, want to start the introductions?"

"Sure! Hello everyone, I'm Alanna Trebond and I'm a current Senior
here at Fandom. I've worked at the clinic since day one and will be at
the bruises and cuts station. Most of my experience comes from working
in military hospitals. Also? If you have any bruises, cuts, or a light
fever and don't want to go to the clinic or have a broken bone you
want to heal faster? Find me, and there's a good chance I'll be able
to heal you. So...Dr. Reid?"

"...right. I'm Dr. Reid, I'm most of the way through a residency in
internal medicine and I have plans to go into endocrinology someday.
I've been in Fandom about four months; before that, I was at a
hospital in California. I can't heal magically, but I can do most of
the fun doctor stuff, though I'm not much for cutting people open. And
I work at the clinic Mondays now, but that's still new to me."

"Peter?"

"Compared to the rest of these folks, I'm not much in this realm. I'm
Peter Pevensie. I took both Dr. Reid's courses this summer and have
some battlefield experience. Basically, I know enough to know what not
to do."

"And Mr. Gavin."

Tommy looked like he really wanted a cigarette. "Okay, listen up. My
name is Tommy Gavin, formerly FDNY, currently head of FTEC. That means
I get paid to be in charge of making sure nobody on this freak-ass
island ends up dead. Except the ones who are already dead and let's
not even get into that craptacular mess of Fandom insanity.
I've been in the middle of shit that would make you piss your pants
right now. Snow mosters, jello dragons - fucking Guilliani. So
do not try to be stupid on my watch, okay?"

He finished that off with a look that made it clear actually answering
would not be a smart move.

"Thank you Mr. Gavin." Alanna smiled at Tommy. "All right back to me
then. I know a lot of you are thinking that you're never going to need
this stuff." She smirked. "Yeah right. Last year we had zombies attack
the school, snow monsters attack the town, creepy voiceless guys try
to kill people, jello dragons, gremlin bites, and I'm sure there other
things that I'm forgetting. On top of that? There's regular students
who can't walk without bumping into furniture. So knowing a little
first aide? Just might save your life. Or your friend's life."

"Mummies," Elliot supplied. "Right, so this stuff is important. First
tool you want? Is your cell phone." She brandished hers, which was
bright green and very tiny. "If an injury's at all serious -- and you
want to assume it is -- call 911 and somebody who's trained in this
stuff will show up."

She turned to her former student.

"Pevensie, tell them what else you learned about assessing injuries."

Peter flashed a grin. "Nothing like a final paper. Once the people who
know what they're doing are on their way, you look over the scene
again to see what you can do to help or what first aid, you can
administer. Don't move anyone who seems injured at all unless they're
about to get severely hurt by staying there. Big rocks falling? Pull
them out of the way. Otherwise, leave them be until help comes. If
you're not sure how to do something, don't do it."

He looked towards Tommy to see what he wanted to add.

"Do not try to be a hero," Tommy said. "I don't care what the
Hell you were in your home town, planet, whatever the blah blah blah.
In a danger situation heroes are the stupid assholes who are in it for
their own glory. What's really needed is somebody to make sure
that your teammate - in this case your class member - makes it out of
there alive."

"All right, that's all for us. Remember to think before you do
something and there are people who are actually trained medics on this
island. Dr. Reid? Anything else to add?"

"Nope, just go forth and try things out at the stations. We'll
demonstrate techniques, and let us know if you need help. Oh -- don't
steal all of the bandages to make a mummy, they're expensive and it
itches the person you do it to."

[OOC: Post is open, but please wait for the instructors to ping in stations before replying at them.]

"Same here, Evie!" He motioned to her notes, adding, "You know, I'm pretty sure there's not going to be a test on this or anything."

Re: Arrive and Mingle

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2006-08-29 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"Beg pardon? Oh." Evie turned a little pink, and shook her head. "No, of course not, but truly, I hadn't heard any of this before. Well, I knew a bit about not moving people, sometimes there are accidents at digs, but the rest of it-- it's just very interesting." She restrained herself a little and said, "And how are you finding it?"

Re: Arrive and Mingle

[identity profile] deanforrester.livejournal.com 2006-08-29 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
He laughed at her eagerness; she kind of reminded him of Rory a little, he guessed. "Oh, it's okay. I know most of this stuff already. I had to learn it in Boy Scouts. And on various sports teams over the years. But it's always good to get caught up."

Re: Arrive and Mingle

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2006-08-29 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's all right then. You were in the Scouts? My brother was in them for a year." Honesty compelled her to add, "But then he was asked to leave because of a prank he pulled on some of the other boys. He learned a good bit about fire-starting, though."

Re: Arrive and Mingle

[identity profile] deanforrester.livejournal.com 2006-08-29 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Dean chuckled; he definitely knew the type Evie's brother must have been. "Yeah, I was. Stopped when I moved to Stars Hollow, though. I don't really miss it all that much. I never pulled any pranks myself, though. I know a couple guys who did, and lemme tell you, I wasn't sad to see them go."

Re: Arrive and Mingle

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2006-08-30 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
"That would be Jonathan," Evie said sadly. "Life of the party, until the teachers show up. But he was hoping to get booted anyway, he wanted to be elsewhere." The track, mostly. "I would have joined the Girl Guides myself, but Mayfair didn't have a troop formed when we lived there. I wonder what kind of clubs they have here?" she speculated.

Re: Arrive and Mingle

[identity profile] deanforrester.livejournal.com 2006-08-30 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
"No idea. I don't think I even knew they did clubs. Although I guess it's a given. Probably all sorts of crazy things. The Clone Making Club and the UFO Appreciation Society or something." He shrugged, hoping they'd at least have some normal stuff. "I'm still holding out for sports teams, and maybe something like autoshop or woodworking. I like doing stuff with my hands like that."

Re: Arrive and Mingle

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2006-08-30 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
"What's a UFO?" At least Evie has her notebook ready for the answer. "And autoshop? Really, like working on automobiles? I'm not good with mechanical things, but that must be fun."

Re: Arrive and Mingle

[identity profile] deanforrester.livejournal.com 2006-08-30 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
"An Unidentified Flying Object," he said, dropping his head and snickering. "Spaceships, kind of. In general people think they don't exist, but now I'm pretty sure they must." He'd forgotten she wouldn't know what a UFO was, and to her, cars must be pretty new. "Yeah, working on cars. I'm kinda good at it. I built one pretty much from the ground up for my girlfriend back home, actually. It's definitely fun." He hoped he didn't sound too much like he was bragging, but he was proud of that car.

Re: Arrive and Mingle

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2006-08-30 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, that's amazing." Someday, she'll stop saying that, but it's not today. "Do you hope to be an engineer? And spaceships, yes. And broomsticks, and timeships," Evie adds almost reverently. "So many things I never imagined are real, here." Part of what he said caught up with her, and she stopped, peering at him curiously. "You have a girlfriend? Back home?"

Re: Arrive and Mingle

[identity profile] deanforrester.livejournal.com 2006-08-30 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
"Engineer? No, I'm nowhere near good enough at math for that. I don't know what I want to do, really. I was hoping I could figure it out here, though." He looked a little distracted, thinking about how the Gilmores looked down on him because he didn't yet know what he wanted to do with his life.

"And um, yeah, well. It's kind of complicated, the girlfriend thing. I had a girlfriend, but then we broke up. And we'd kind of just got back together again before my parents told me I was coming here for school instead of going back to Stars Hollow High, but um. Things were kind of up in the air." He took a deep breath, not sure how much Evie really wanted to hear. "Plus, there's some sort of alternate version of my girlfriend here at Fandom High. But she's older and said she broke up with me in her world, so, uh. It's all really confusing." Dean looked a little shellshocked, now that'd he'd blurted it all out.

Re: Arrive and Mingle

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2006-08-30 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
"Goodness." Evie's eyes had widened in confusion, because there was time travel, and there was this. "It sounds very very complex. So you *might* have a girlfriend, except she's not here? I think?"

Re: Arrive and Mingle

[identity profile] deanforrester.livejournal.com 2006-08-30 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Dean shrugged apologetically. "That sounds...kind of right? I'm not really all that sure myself."

Re: Arrive and Mingle

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2006-08-30 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
"That must be *very* difficult for you," Evie said sympathetically, patting his arm. Boyfriends and girlfriends were out of her depth, really, but it couldn't be fair to have time travel messing it up. "Although I'm sure it'll sort itself out? With time, I mean. She could visit you?" She frowned. "Or perhaps not, if she's already... here." Perplexed, she said, "I'm afraid it's all rather over my head."

Re: Arrive and Mingle

[identity profile] deanforrester.livejournal.com 2006-08-30 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
"Exactly. I'm guessing things will be put on hold until we all get a better grasp of the situation." He hadn't even told the Rory at home that there was another Rory here, yet. Dean had rather a lot of explaining to do. "I'm guessing you don't have a similar situation?"

Re: Arrive and Mingle

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2006-08-30 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
"Similar situation?" Evie asked, puzzled, then laughed. "Oh good heavens, no. I went to a girl's school for a year before this, then a day school which was mostly girls, with only a few younger boys attending. There's no-- I mean, I barely know any boys. Never mind having a 'boyfriend,'" she said, putting quote marks around the word.

Re: Arrive and Mingle

[identity profile] deanforrester.livejournal.com 2006-08-30 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Dean nodded slowly, his mind working. He wasn't sure she wouldn't smack him, and he didn't exactly know the polite way to go about asking, but he hadn't even thought about it before, and now he was dying to know. "Um. So, it's just a lack-of-opportunity thing? Not that, um. You know. You like...girls." He tried not to look too concerned about the answer.

Re: Arrive and Mingle

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2006-08-30 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
Even having met Janet, and talked to Jack, this went sailing right over Evie's head. Wheeeee.

"Well, of course I like girls." Evie gave him a puzzled look. "I'm not one of those women who claims that all the members of her sex are out to get her, or can't be trusted and such. Women can be just as honorable and strong as men, you know," she said severely. "Just because people call us the weaker sex does *not* make it true."

Re: Arrive and Mingle

[identity profile] deanforrester.livejournal.com 2006-08-30 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
Dean's eyebrows drew together as he tried to parse out what she was saying. He was pretty sure that meant that she didn't get what he was saying, and not that she did in fact like like girls, but he wasn't positive. "Um. Yes! Yes, they can be. Definitely. Not the weaker sex at all. But that's um. That's not what I meant. I meant. Um." He was valiantly attempting not to blush. She certainly wasn't making this easy for him. "I meant do you like like girls. Um. To. You know. Date."

He scrubbed a hand over his face, giving up. "Nevermind, I shouldn't have asked, it's probably really rude and I was just curious because it sounded like...but um. Nevermind."

Re: Arrive and Mingle

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2006-08-30 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Evie stared at him a moment longer, then squeaked. "No! Not that it's immoral or anything, souls are important, I mean, no! Why would you think that I-- what did I say--" She drew herself up, and tried to calm down. "How did I manage to give you such an erroneous impression?"

Especially considering how uncomfortable it had made her when he stretched out on his bed. Oh, lord. She probably seemed like some asexual dwarf, compared to the girls that he knew....

Re: Arrive and Mingle

[identity profile] deanforrester.livejournal.com 2006-08-30 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Dean slapped both hands over his face, groaning. "God, why did I even say anything? I am such a jerk." He looked back at her, completely chastened. "I don't know! I just. I wondered! Of course it's not bad. I wouldn't--I mean. It wouldn't matter if you were, and just. I wanted to make sure, I didn't want to assume when I didn't--" He gave up, sighing hugely. "Oh nevermind. Let's just forget I ever opened my mouth."

Re: Arrive and Mingle

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2006-08-30 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
"Perhaps we'd better," Evie said tartly, thoroughly unsettled. "Right, then. Yes."

Long, awkward silence on her part.

"So. Um. Are, are, you?" Because that is the only other reason she can think of, aside from her looking or sounding like a hermaphrodite, that she can think of.

Re: Arrive and Mingle

[identity profile] deanforrester.livejournal.com 2006-08-30 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
"No! No. I have--had--a girlfriend!" Dean wanted to die, and that was really all there was to it. "It's not that uncommon, though. I promise you're not giving off a vibe or anything, I just wasn't sure and you said you didn't really know any guys and didn't sound like you really cared and I think most smart girls who look like you would've had lots of guys trying to talk them up all the time and." He realized he was babbling, and figured he should shut the hell up before he said something else awful and embarrassing and rude. Why did he constantly have to get riled up and say stupid things in the heat of the moment? It must've been his curse. "I guess I kind of forgot things are different where and, um. When. You come from."

Re: Arrive and Mingle

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2006-08-30 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
Sifting through that as best she could, Evie got a tiny bit more depressed in another direction: evidently she hid her interest *too* well. Oh, she'd never get the hang of this.

"Well, you don't have a vibe either, whatever that is, but neither does Jack, and he has a boyfriend and a girlfriend, and I really don't think I'm very good at telling these things and I didn't want to assume you felt like you couldn't tell me because I'm from ninety years ago," she stopped for breath, gulping a bit. "I just, just, I'm only 15! The only boys I know are my brothers friends and they're all idiots!"

That probably didn't sound all that good either.

Re: Arrive and Mingle

[identity profile] deanforrester.livejournal.com 2006-08-30 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
Dean took a deep breath. "Right. Okay. So we're both straight as far as we know, and we both have really, really bad gaydars. You've got the additional handicap of being from ninety years ago and only knowing males of the idiotic persuasion. I have the additional handicap of having no clue what's going on with my current girlfriend or the future version of my current girlfriend who also attends my school."

Well, when he said it all like that, it seemed kind of bleak.
