First Aid Event, Danger Shop, Tuesday Afternoon

The Danger Shop was arranged for students to practice first aid, with
workstations, CPR dummies, and a wide variety of medical supplies. Out
of a combination of fear of being known as crazy badger teacher
forever and a lack of need, Elliot hadn't engaged the computer, so --
in a novel twist -- everything in the room was real.

She stood on a platform at the front of the room with the other
instructors, waiting for all of the students to file in. When it
seemed like no one else was coming in, she started to talk, glancing
occasionally at some notecards in one hand.

"Hi, thanks for coming out. This is the big first aid shindig, or 'how
to make it through your first semester at Fandom without dying.' I am
Elliot, Dr. Reid, -- whatever -- and I am teaching biology and health
this term. We're going to introduce ourselves and give some basics,
and then there are stations for you to learn first aid techniques. And
we'll be around all afternoon for questions."

"Alanna, want to start the introductions?"

"Sure! Hello everyone, I'm Alanna Trebond and I'm a current Senior
here at Fandom. I've worked at the clinic since day one and will be at
the bruises and cuts station. Most of my experience comes from working
in military hospitals. Also? If you have any bruises, cuts, or a light
fever and don't want to go to the clinic or have a broken bone you
want to heal faster? Find me, and there's a good chance I'll be able
to heal you. So...Dr. Reid?"

"...right. I'm Dr. Reid, I'm most of the way through a residency in
internal medicine and I have plans to go into endocrinology someday.
I've been in Fandom about four months; before that, I was at a
hospital in California. I can't heal magically, but I can do most of
the fun doctor stuff, though I'm not much for cutting people open. And
I work at the clinic Mondays now, but that's still new to me."

"Peter?"

"Compared to the rest of these folks, I'm not much in this realm. I'm
Peter Pevensie. I took both Dr. Reid's courses this summer and have
some battlefield experience. Basically, I know enough to know what not
to do."

"And Mr. Gavin."

Tommy looked like he really wanted a cigarette. "Okay, listen up. My
name is Tommy Gavin, formerly FDNY, currently head of FTEC. That means
I get paid to be in charge of making sure nobody on this freak-ass
island ends up dead. Except the ones who are already dead and let's
not even get into that craptacular mess of Fandom insanity.
I've been in the middle of shit that would make you piss your pants
right now. Snow mosters, jello dragons - fucking Guilliani. So
do not try to be stupid on my watch, okay?"

He finished that off with a look that made it clear actually answering
would not be a smart move.

"Thank you Mr. Gavin." Alanna smiled at Tommy. "All right back to me
then. I know a lot of you are thinking that you're never going to need
this stuff." She smirked. "Yeah right. Last year we had zombies attack
the school, snow monsters attack the town, creepy voiceless guys try
to kill people, jello dragons, gremlin bites, and I'm sure there other
things that I'm forgetting. On top of that? There's regular students
who can't walk without bumping into furniture. So knowing a little
first aide? Just might save your life. Or your friend's life."

"Mummies," Elliot supplied. "Right, so this stuff is important. First
tool you want? Is your cell phone." She brandished hers, which was
bright green and very tiny. "If an injury's at all serious -- and you
want to assume it is -- call 911 and somebody who's trained in this
stuff will show up."

She turned to her former student.

"Pevensie, tell them what else you learned about assessing injuries."

Peter flashed a grin. "Nothing like a final paper. Once the people who
know what they're doing are on their way, you look over the scene
again to see what you can do to help or what first aid, you can
administer. Don't move anyone who seems injured at all unless they're
about to get severely hurt by staying there. Big rocks falling? Pull
them out of the way. Otherwise, leave them be until help comes. If
you're not sure how to do something, don't do it."

He looked towards Tommy to see what he wanted to add.

"Do not try to be a hero," Tommy said. "I don't care what the
Hell you were in your home town, planet, whatever the blah blah blah.
In a danger situation heroes are the stupid assholes who are in it for
their own glory. What's really needed is somebody to make sure
that your teammate - in this case your class member - makes it out of
there alive."

"All right, that's all for us. Remember to think before you do
something and there are people who are actually trained medics on this
island. Dr. Reid? Anything else to add?"

"Nope, just go forth and try things out at the stations. We'll
demonstrate techniques, and let us know if you need help. Oh -- don't
steal all of the bandages to make a mummy, they're expensive and it
itches the person you do it to."

[OOC: Post is open, but please wait for the instructors to ping in stations before replying at them.]

Alanna stood by the station, hoping people were actually paying attention. Faithful was taking a nap on her head.

Cuts and bruises were pretty frequent; Chad listened to the girl, remembered her face, and idly glanced through the handouts for now.

Alanna smiled at Chad. "Do you have any questions? And 'why is there a cat sleeping on your head doesn't count."

Re: Cuts & Bruises Station

[identity profile] senor-chado.livejournal.com 2006-08-29 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Crap. There went Chad's only question. Of course he'd been paying attention to the cat; how could he not? It was cat! Maybe not particularly cute, but it was still at least rather....regal, perhaps.

He found a new question.

"What's its name?"

Re: Cuts & Bruises Station

[identity profile] threeweapons.livejournal.com 2006-08-29 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"Faithful." Alanna and Faithful replied at the same time. "Oh good, you're awake." She plucked the animal from her head and put it on the table. "How about questions relating to cuts and bruises?"

Re: Cuts & Bruises Station

[identity profile] senor-chado.livejournal.com 2006-08-29 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey. The cat talked. Chad honestly tried not to think of Faithful suddenly revealing himself to actually be a beautiful woman like Yourichi had done (God, she made such a dreamfully awful cat). He really did. But the wistful hopes of a young man could not be contained so easily.

He also hoped that his hoping didn't mean he was staring. He was, though, just a little, but stopped when he shook his head and focused back on Alanna. "Not really."

Re: Cuts & Bruises Station

[identity profile] threeweapons.livejournal.com 2006-08-29 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Faithful yawned and poked at one of the fliers on display. "Am I allowed to make bets on how soon the idiots are going to need your help?" Alanna sighed. "No." She turned back to Chad. "Well, if you need anything, I'm here all afternoon, and my offer of free healing always stands." She paused. "You can ask about the cat."

Re: Cuts & Bruises Station

[identity profile] senor-chado.livejournal.com 2006-08-29 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"Can I ask the cat about the cat?" That seemed to make much more sense to him than going through a filter. After all, the cat was right there. And could talk. And had made a comment that rung terribly similiar to something Yourichi would say when she gallavanted around as a cat.

This is the kind of thing Evie does to herself with depressing regularity, so she went over and smiled at Alanna, looking at the materials and looking hopeful. "Thank you for your presentation. Can I have one of each?"

Re: Cuts & Bruises Station

[identity profile] threeweapons.livejournal.com 2006-08-29 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"A bruise and a cut? I usually try not to hit girls, but if you really want." Alanna smiled though.

Re: Cuts & Bruises Station

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2006-08-29 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Evie laughed, a little embarassed, and took a few of the handouts. "I meant this. I must say, it's very thoughtful of the administration to think of this, our first week here. Even if we probably won't need it here, *anything* can happen, can't it?"

Re: Cuts & Bruises Station

[identity profile] threeweapons.livejournal.com 2006-08-29 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yup, that's a very good summary. And for the record? My healing offer wasn't a joke. Are you new?"

Re: Cuts & Bruises Station

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2006-08-29 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"Very," Evie admitted. "And feeling it all the time. I'm from ninety years in the past, this is all a bit overwhelming." She peered at Alanna inquisitively. "You can heal people? Truly? Extraordinary."

Re: Cuts & Bruises Station

[identity profile] threeweapons.livejournal.com 2006-08-29 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"In my world? It's still the 400's." Alanna smirked. "We don't even have electricity. But we do have magic, and so yes, I can. I mostly heal, but there's other, really really random, spells I can cast as well. Damn, where are my manners? I'm Alanna Trebond."

Re: Cuts & Bruises Station

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2006-08-29 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"Good lord. That *is* comforting, if you've adjusted to it so well." Evie gave a little sigh of relief, and smiled widely, skating over the profanity because of her own embarassment. "Oh, forgive me, I *keep* doing this, talking to people without introducing myself. Evie Carnahan. Incoming Sophomore."

[identity profile] l1ttle-billy.livejournal.com 2006-08-29 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Billy was paying attention. Mostly to the cat napping on the girl's head. That was just so damn cute. But he was also paying attention to the actual workshop.

Re: Cuts & Bruises Station

[identity profile] threeweapons.livejournal.com 2006-08-29 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
The cat opened one eye, stuck his tongue out at Billy, and went back to sleep.

Billy blinked. Not any less cute. He smirked.

Dean grabbed yet another handout. And to think, real classes hadn't even started yet! At least this was stuff he actually needed to know. He'd heard a lot of it before, being a sports kind of guy, but it never heard to get caught up.

Re: Cuts & Bruises Station

[identity profile] threeweapons.livejournal.com 2006-08-29 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Alanna smiled. "If you have any questions, I'm here. The healing part wasn't a joke, by the way."

Re: Cuts & Bruises Station

[identity profile] deanforrester.livejournal.com 2006-08-29 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"I think I'm good. I mean, I've heard this kind of stuff before, I just wanted to kinda. Brush up, I guess." He blinked, remembering what she'd said about healing people faster. "I shouldn't be surprised about the healing thing, considering some of the stuff I've heard in the past two days. How, uh. How does that work, exactly?"

Re: Cuts & Bruises Station

[identity profile] threeweapons.livejournal.com 2006-08-29 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"Um...it's magic. I can make bruises and cuts fade away, after they've been properly cleaned of course. I can also speed up the healing process for bones and help deal with fevers." Alanna didn't mention how much it would cost her to do that. "Everything else gets done the regular way though."

Re: Cuts & Bruises Station

[identity profile] deanforrester.livejournal.com 2006-08-29 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Dean was clearly impressed. "So, where do we go if we need you to, uh. Help out?" He'd definitely had his share of sports injuries, and having someone like Alanna around was going to be a godsend.

Re: Cuts & Bruises Station

[identity profile] threeweapons.livejournal.com 2006-08-29 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm either in class, the gym, or my room which is 326. I'm in the clinic Friday and Saturday mornings and if all else fails? My number is 555-ALAN. Oh, and the commons, but then you might have to run around a bit." "Or you can use me as a messenger." Faithful said with a tired sigh.

Re: Cuts & Bruises Station

[identity profile] deanforrester.livejournal.com 2006-08-30 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Dean's eyes bugged. "Okay, uh. Talking cat," he said, stating the obvious. "Is that your, erhm. Daemon?" He remembered Lyra, his roommate, and her talking ferret-thing Pan, who was apparently her soul, and figured Alanna must have the same setup going.
