First Aid Event, Danger Shop, Tuesday Afternoon

The Danger Shop was arranged for students to practice first aid, with
workstations, CPR dummies, and a wide variety of medical supplies. Out
of a combination of fear of being known as crazy badger teacher
forever and a lack of need, Elliot hadn't engaged the computer, so --
in a novel twist -- everything in the room was real.

She stood on a platform at the front of the room with the other
instructors, waiting for all of the students to file in. When it
seemed like no one else was coming in, she started to talk, glancing
occasionally at some notecards in one hand.

"Hi, thanks for coming out. This is the big first aid shindig, or 'how
to make it through your first semester at Fandom without dying.' I am
Elliot, Dr. Reid, -- whatever -- and I am teaching biology and health
this term. We're going to introduce ourselves and give some basics,
and then there are stations for you to learn first aid techniques. And
we'll be around all afternoon for questions."

"Alanna, want to start the introductions?"

"Sure! Hello everyone, I'm Alanna Trebond and I'm a current Senior
here at Fandom. I've worked at the clinic since day one and will be at
the bruises and cuts station. Most of my experience comes from working
in military hospitals. Also? If you have any bruises, cuts, or a light
fever and don't want to go to the clinic or have a broken bone you
want to heal faster? Find me, and there's a good chance I'll be able
to heal you. So...Dr. Reid?"

"...right. I'm Dr. Reid, I'm most of the way through a residency in
internal medicine and I have plans to go into endocrinology someday.
I've been in Fandom about four months; before that, I was at a
hospital in California. I can't heal magically, but I can do most of
the fun doctor stuff, though I'm not much for cutting people open. And
I work at the clinic Mondays now, but that's still new to me."

"Peter?"

"Compared to the rest of these folks, I'm not much in this realm. I'm
Peter Pevensie. I took both Dr. Reid's courses this summer and have
some battlefield experience. Basically, I know enough to know what not
to do."

"And Mr. Gavin."

Tommy looked like he really wanted a cigarette. "Okay, listen up. My
name is Tommy Gavin, formerly FDNY, currently head of FTEC. That means
I get paid to be in charge of making sure nobody on this freak-ass
island ends up dead. Except the ones who are already dead and let's
not even get into that craptacular mess of Fandom insanity.
I've been in the middle of shit that would make you piss your pants
right now. Snow mosters, jello dragons - fucking Guilliani. So
do not try to be stupid on my watch, okay?"

He finished that off with a look that made it clear actually answering
would not be a smart move.

"Thank you Mr. Gavin." Alanna smiled at Tommy. "All right back to me
then. I know a lot of you are thinking that you're never going to need
this stuff." She smirked. "Yeah right. Last year we had zombies attack
the school, snow monsters attack the town, creepy voiceless guys try
to kill people, jello dragons, gremlin bites, and I'm sure there other
things that I'm forgetting. On top of that? There's regular students
who can't walk without bumping into furniture. So knowing a little
first aide? Just might save your life. Or your friend's life."

"Mummies," Elliot supplied. "Right, so this stuff is important. First
tool you want? Is your cell phone." She brandished hers, which was
bright green and very tiny. "If an injury's at all serious -- and you
want to assume it is -- call 911 and somebody who's trained in this
stuff will show up."

She turned to her former student.

"Pevensie, tell them what else you learned about assessing injuries."

Peter flashed a grin. "Nothing like a final paper. Once the people who
know what they're doing are on their way, you look over the scene
again to see what you can do to help or what first aid, you can
administer. Don't move anyone who seems injured at all unless they're
about to get severely hurt by staying there. Big rocks falling? Pull
them out of the way. Otherwise, leave them be until help comes. If
you're not sure how to do something, don't do it."

He looked towards Tommy to see what he wanted to add.

"Do not try to be a hero," Tommy said. "I don't care what the
Hell you were in your home town, planet, whatever the blah blah blah.
In a danger situation heroes are the stupid assholes who are in it for
their own glory. What's really needed is somebody to make sure
that your teammate - in this case your class member - makes it out of
there alive."

"All right, that's all for us. Remember to think before you do
something and there are people who are actually trained medics on this
island. Dr. Reid? Anything else to add?"

"Nope, just go forth and try things out at the stations. We'll
demonstrate techniques, and let us know if you need help. Oh -- don't
steal all of the bandages to make a mummy, they're expensive and it
itches the person you do it to."

[OOC: Post is open, but please wait for the instructors to ping in stations before replying at them.]

Peter stood by his station waiting for possible questions. And if it was necessary, ready to defend the triangle bandages from potential mummy-wrapping thieves.

Chad didn't have any questions about breaks and sprains himself, but he was interested to see if others did. Plus, he was wondering if this was maybe the irritating British kid his roommate had told him about. Chad didn't think he seemed all too irritating.

Peter nodded at the very, very tall boy and wondered if he had giant blood in him. "Afternoon," he said with a smile.

Chad lifted his hand, his typical wave-less wave, and wondered if, since he'd been addressed, it meant he should ask a question. He quickly tried to think of something. "Hello," he said. "Have you ever broken bones?"

Re: Breaks & Sprains Station

[identity profile] once-a-king.livejournal.com 2006-08-29 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Which was...not the question he expected. "I have, actually. Though I'm not sure it's a prerequisite of learning to treat them. Have you?"

Re: Breaks & Sprains Station

[identity profile] senor-chado.livejournal.com 2006-08-29 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"I think so," he responded. "Maybe a few times."

Re: Breaks & Sprains Station

[identity profile] once-a-king.livejournal.com 2006-08-29 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Peter tilted his head curiously. "You don't remember? Mine have generally been painful."

Billy knew all about imobilising the limb and splints, but had never actually tried setting a bone.

Re: Breaks & Sprains Station

Peter nodded at Billy.

Re: Breaks & Sprains Station

[identity profile] l1ttle-billy.livejournal.com 2006-08-29 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Billy nodded back. "So, for us novices, any advice on the setting of bones?"

Re: Breaks & Sprains Station

[identity profile] once-a-king.livejournal.com 2006-08-29 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Peter raised an eyebrow. "Let the doctor do it unless it's a matter of life and death."

Re: Breaks & Sprains Station

[identity profile] l1ttle-billy.livejournal.com 2006-08-30 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
First actual grin in a long time. "Works for me."

Re: Breaks & Sprains Station

[identity profile] once-a-king.livejournal.com 2006-08-30 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Peter nodded. "It's a small island. If it's needed, help can usually get there." He smiled. "Also, people like Alanna with the healing magic? Be nice to them."

Re: Breaks & Sprains Station

Dean took the necessary handouts and gave Peter a wave. He was pretty well-versed in bandaging from sports-injury intruction he'd had from coaches in the past, but he hadn't used triangle bandages in particular all that often. First time for everything, he guessed.

Re: Breaks & Sprains Station

[identity profile] once-a-king.livejournal.com 2006-08-29 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Peter waved back and took a guess. "Dean?"

Re: Breaks & Sprains Station

"Right in one!" He grinned, glad people were starting to realize he had better hair than Sam. And was taller. And looked less emotionally constipated all the time. "So what can you tell me about triangle bandages that I never learned in first aide as a Boy Scout?"

Re: Breaks & Sprains Station

[identity profile] once-a-king.livejournal.com 2006-08-30 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
"Don't listen to Dr. Reid," Peter said with a wink. "These make excellent fake mummy wrappings."

Re: Breaks & Sprains Station

[identity profile] deanforrester.livejournal.com 2006-08-30 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
"I'll be sure to remember that," he laughed, picking up a triangle bandage and looking at it appraisingly. "Although maybe the non-triangle bandages would be better. Less wasted fabric."

Re: Breaks & Sprains Station

[identity profile] once-a-king.livejournal.com 2006-08-30 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Peter nodded. "I think you're probably right. But then, these are what we have at our disposal."

Re: Breaks & Sprains Station

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2006-08-30 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Evie, on Tommy's say-so (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/990910.html?thread=53025470#t53025470), had arrived to take a triangle bandage, and was now attempting to fix it on her elbow. She wasn't hurt, but practice was always a good thing, wasn't it?

Re: Breaks & Sprains Station

[identity profile] once-a-king.livejournal.com 2006-08-30 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
"Miss Evie, how do you do," Peter asked with a smile and slight bow.

Re: Breaks & Sprains Station

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2006-08-30 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Evie smiled nervously, then a little more naturally when she realized: Peter was British. No chance of exotic diseases! "I do very well." She looked at her arm, which now had her elbow tied up to her shoulder. "Well, I do rather awkwardly, actually."

Re: Breaks & Sprains Station

[identity profile] once-a-king.livejournal.com 2006-08-30 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Peter laughed. "Rather well actually considering one doesn't usually tie these on themselves. At least not on their arm."

Re: Breaks & Sprains Station

[identity profile] bookyeve.livejournal.com 2006-08-30 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Evie carefully loosened it, and said, "No, but I don't think I could find anyone willing to let me practice on them. Or that I'd want to, really. Still, they're massively useful, aren't they?"
