Baking Workshop 8/21, Monday Morning

"Good morning," Piper greets quietly. She might be sad because this is her last workshop ever. "Hopefully, you all brought a recipe of your choice today. If not, feel free to use any of the recipes from this session."

"Thanks for signing up for the workshop and for being a pretty awesome class," she continued, giving them a warm smile.

"You can have some of my fritters," Angela offered. "I mean, if the cheesecake is for someone special, it's not a big deal."

She paused. "From radio it sounded like you've had a rotten couple of days."

"Nah, it's fine. Cheesecake is meant to be shared," Isabel smiled. "I would like to try the fritters. I don't think I've ever had one." She shrugged and smiled wryly. "I've definitely had better days but it's not the end of the world."

"They're what my dad always makes," Angela explained, plucking one out of the oil and putting it on a plate. "Some people put syrup on them, but I don't have any. That one's yours."

She frowned. "When the best you can say is it's not the end of the world? That always sucks. Hope stuff gets better."

"Think they'll taste okay with Tabasco?" she asked, eyeing the plate. "It's what I'll be putting on my slice of cheesecake but in that case it's a weird alien thing."

"I'm sure it will," Isabel said, in no way glancing around to see what Greg doing. "I'm looking at it optimistically. The only place things can go are up."

"It's just corn and batter, so it should be good with Tabasco," Angela said. She eyed Isabel's cheesecake batter. "Did you think about just dumping the tabasco into the cheesecake?"

She also did not look at Greg. "You guys will work it out."

"The thought has crossed my mind. But I'm leery of adding extra liquid to the batter," Isabel said. "Molly and I had a bad experience with the chocolate cake a few weeks ago. We left out the coffee so the cake was too dry. I'm afraid to add the Tabasco because then the cheesecake might be soupy."

"Maybe, maybe not."

"There's probably a way to do it, but I don't know," Angela said thoughtfully. "At least you can add it after."

She shrugged. She rememebred how irritated she had been when people told her she would work things out with Marty, and she didn't want to inflict that on Isabel, so ... "Whatever happens, you'll be fine," she said, turning back to her batter, but clearly still listening.

"After is better. Then I don't have to inflict my love of sweet and spicy on the rest of the world," she chuckled. "A few brave souls have tried. But they haven't liked it."

Isabel touched the fritter and found that it had cooled down enough to eat. Dousing it with Tabasco, she took a bite. "This is good Angela. Thanks, for everything."

"It's nothing. I mean, anytime," Angela said quietly, with a slight smile.
