The Kludge's Guide to the Universe | Dangershop, Wednesday Afternoon (Week 5)

Harper clapped his hands and pressed the control. "I'm sure you all recognise this shipyard from last week," he said. "You escaped the cells, you got through the town, now you face one more challenge. Getting off this hunk of rock."

Harper walked up to a ship that looked like, well, a junk heap. "This is the Eureka Maru, and today you're going to be flying her. But what's that I hear you say, 'Oh, Harper we don't have pilot licences.' Guess what? I don't care, and neither to the cops chasing you down."

After giving a demonstration of the controls, Harper stood up and gestured to the controls. "I want each of you to go try and go through the lift off sequence and make it out of the atmosphere, and to the shadow side of the moon." He held up one hand. "And you can't ask me for help. You can ask your classmates, hell, your classmates can volunteer advice."

"Have fun."

Fly my pretties! Fly.

Fry jumped in the seat first. "All right!" He strapped himself in and looked around at the controls. "Hmmm." He grabbed the joysticks. "It's just like video games." He tried to get it to work. "Red button. It's always the red button." It wasn't, but he got it started eventually.

There was some clunking and clipping and bad driving, but he eventually got airborne.

Then he wanted to try loop-the-loops. It didn't work so well.

Fry crashed.

Jamie fiddled with the controls until he got the engines started. At which point he tried to push down on the clutch only to remember that this isn't a car.

There was an extremely disturbing grinding noise coming from the control panel.

Jamie fumbles with the controls and somehow manages to put the spaceship in reverse instead of forward. With even more grinding he manages to get it go forward and up.

The Maru swayed gently in the breeze. Of course since it was several thousand metric tonnes, this could be considered a worrying development.

Jamie did his best to try and steady the ship's movements and pulled up on the stick to try and break out of the planet's atmosphere.

This is what Aeryn considers to be the easiest part. She paid enough attention to the demonstration to be able to repeat the procedure, and the rest is simple. After all, it it's like she's had any sort of training in this sort of thing.

Harper fiddled with a control.

That would be the left stablizer blowing.

Oh, of course.

Aeryn doesn't panic, instead doing whatever handwavey piloty thing that needs to be done to keep control of the ship.

The ship righted. Yay!

John hopped into the pilot's seat and strapped himself in.
It's just like a Cessna. It's just like a Cessna. It's just like a Cessna, not a piece of--shit, how does this thing work?

John gets the engines fired up and starts the takeoff.

The right engine started stalling.

John started a litany of cursing as he tried to find the fuel control to rev up the engine on the right side.

That red blinky-light on that panel over there might have had something to do with it.

John sees a blinky light on his second scan of the control board. He slaps the corrisponding button.

John jumps in the ship with the thoughts of what would Tyr do? running through his head.

He punches a few button, grips the steering thingamig and pulls the ship up.

"I didn't hit anything taking off!"

He shuts that up quickly because Tyr would so not celebrate.

Now we're talking. Cameron bounces when it was his turn to take the controls. It's a lot like the ship Beka let him fly once and after Harper's explanation it's all fresh in his mind again. Of course, Beka let him fly in the middle of space where there was nothing to hit.

He takes it slow at first and manages to clear the port without actually something and then he's off. Wiee!

It wasn't his Racer. Or his Mystic Titan.

Which meant Xander? Had absolutely no idea what he was doing.

Sam climbed in and settled herself, taking a few minutes to familiarize herself with the controls. Then, she followed the notes she'd taken about the starting sequence, then began to lift off, moving carefully, but not slowly.

Talk with people who aren't flying about those who do.

Or something else entirely.

Aeryn decides to not watch. Because then she will want to correct people.

Except it's impossible not to watch. She can still stay quiet, though, even if she is cursing in her head.

But slowplay is love due to lecture of dooooom.

Yay Sparky cola!

Because if it's not OOC, it's not on.
