Constant Vigilance #4: Friday the 3rd, Morning. Serenity Cove.

Today, the class meets on the beach, to accomadate the student who has a bit of an aquatic problem at the moment. The Doctor set out beach blanket and towels, and has hauled the holoprojector out on a cart.

"Pass forward your requests I asked for, thank you. As I let you know, we're switching things around a bit. Vampires and werewolves will be at a later date. Today is simply 'Close Encounters of the Unattractive Kind'. Now, please remember, that it's not so much that I find these species particularly unpleasant, it's just we might as well show some of the more unsavory aliens out in the world. Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that. I'll be taking questions today, but no lecturing today. It's called close encounters for a reason. You'll be talking to the projections, trying to gather what you can from them. Ask them whatever. Remember they can't actually hurt you, but please only antagonize them if you're being terribly clever about it. There is no assignment for next week. Time for you all to put on your 'first contact' thinking caps. The projector will be sending out three different aliens. Talk to at least one, please."

The Doctor smiled, then turned on the projector. Three forms appeared...

[ooc: OCD is up. Have at me!]

"Right. Until then, tell me more about yourself, so I may be properly impressed before I die." Walter wasn't even bothering to pretend to mean it, but who knew if this thing could read human facial expressions? "Where are you from?"

"I am from Earth," it replied.

A year ago Walter wouldn't have bought that at all. Now? He couldn't discount it as a possibility.

"When? Because if you tell me the past, I'm going to have to laugh."

Re: Projection #2

[identity profile] joxertehmighty.livejournal.com 2006-08-04 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"My species originated millions of years ago," it replied. "Why would you find that funny?"

"Well, if you're so superior, why aren't you around now?" Walter asked quite reasonably.

"We have been hibernating under the surface, awaiting conditions on the surface to return to the ideals that we need."

Re: Projection #2

[identity profile] walter-n-wires.livejournal.com 2006-08-04 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"Humans and mammals can adjust and adapt more quickly. Why are you superior?"

Re: Projection #2

[identity profile] joxertehmighty.livejournal.com 2006-08-05 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
"We are able to handle more extreme high temperatures, and do not have such weak, furry flesh," the Silurian argued.

Re: Projection #2

[identity profile] walter-n-wires.livejournal.com 2006-08-05 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
"But extreme low temperatures make you like a snake on a cold rock, don't they?" Walter scoffed. "And fur is just another way we show our superior ability to adapt."

Re: Projection #2

[identity profile] joxertehmighty.livejournal.com 2006-08-05 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
"We now have the capability to strip out part of the belt in the atmosphere that blocks out so much of the sun's energy," the Silurian said. "How well will you adapt when we do such a thing?"

"Sunscreen?" Walter asked facetiously. This thing was a projection, not real.

"Why would you do that?"

Re: Projection #2

[identity profile] joxertehmighty.livejournal.com 2006-08-05 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
"It would kill all the humans and return the surface temperature to that of our liking," the Silurian said. "It would give us a chance to recreate the Earth as it once was. As it should be."

Re: Projection #2

[identity profile] walter-n-wires.livejournal.com 2006-08-05 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
"If it should be that way, it would be that way," Walter said. "Besides from what I have seen of the way temperatures are changing, humans might do it for you and we'd have no one to blame but ourselves."

Re: Projection #2

[identity profile] joxertehmighty.livejournal.com 2006-08-05 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
"Or perhaps we should just unleash our virus to eradicate you all, and be done with it," the Silurian said.

Re: Projection #2

[identity profile] walter-n-wires.livejournal.com 2006-08-05 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
"What is your problem with humans? It's not our doing that your kind was too weak to endure an ice age." Which was purely a guess even for the mun.

Re: Projection #2

[identity profile] joxertehmighty.livejournal.com 2006-08-05 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
"It's your doing that the oceans are polluted, the sky is filled with toxins, and entire forests have been eradicated," the Silurian said. "All in the name of ape progress."

Re: Projection #2

[identity profile] walter-n-wires.livejournal.com 2006-08-05 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
"And it would be your kind's doing if almost every living thing on the earth's surface were wiped out. And you'd be doing it intentionally. Which of us is worse? The genocides, or the apes?" Walter might have had a certain venomous emphasis on the word "genocides."

Re: Projection #2

[identity profile] joxertehmighty.livejournal.com 2006-08-05 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
"Neither of our methods would kill more than the human race," the Silurian said. "We respect the lesser creatures who do not sully the surface."

Re: Projection #2

[identity profile] walter-n-wires.livejournal.com 2006-08-05 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
"This radiation and temperature change would kill more than humans. I'm no scientist, but that sounds quite obvious."

Re: Projection #2

[identity profile] joxertehmighty.livejournal.com 2006-08-05 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
"Obviously such a measure will only need to be taken if the humans somehow defeat the virus," the Silurian said. "That will be our main line of attack."

Walter had heard about the influenza that had essentially brought WWI to a halt. It was chilling to hear this so casually bandied about by this creature.

"Can't you just take settlements around the equator and share?" It sounded like what people who cared about peace would say.

Re: Projection #2

[identity profile] joxertehmighty.livejournal.com 2006-08-05 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
"Why should I want to share with apes? Apes who mess about with dangerous nuclear experiments?"

Re: Projection #2

[identity profile] walter-n-wires.livejournal.com 2006-08-05 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
"Why should we want to offer to share with lizards who have plans to destroy most of the life on the planet's surface?"

Re: Projection #2

[identity profile] joxertehmighty.livejournal.com 2006-08-05 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
"We were here first."

Re: Projection #2

[identity profile] walter-n-wires.livejournal.com 2006-08-05 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
"Do you have a flag?"

Walter pulled out a camera and snapped the lizard thing's picture, since this was clearly not going anywhere.
