Today, the class meets on the beach, to accomadate the student who has a bit of an aquatic problem at the moment. The Doctor set out beach blanket and towels, and has hauled the holoprojector out on a cart.

"Pass forward your requests I asked for, thank you. As I let you know, we're switching things around a bit. Vampires and werewolves will be at a later date. Today is simply 'Close Encounters of the Unattractive Kind'. Now, please remember, that it's not so much that I find these species particularly unpleasant, it's just we might as well show some of the more unsavory aliens out in the world. Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that. I'll be taking questions today, but no lecturing today. It's called close encounters for a reason. You'll be talking to the projections, trying to gather what you can from them. Ask them whatever. Remember they can't actually hurt you, but please only antagonize them if you're being terribly clever about it. There is no assignment for next week. Time for you all to put on your 'first contact' thinking caps. The projector will be sending out three different aliens. Talk to at least one, please."

The Doctor smiled, then turned on the projector. Three forms appeared...

"So you hatch - out of eggs? Interesting." Jack smiled, and tipped his head to the side. "Do you come from a large family? Lots of siblings? And is yours one of the friendly or the less friendly ones?

"Mine is friendly," Hob said. "And I have twenty-three brothers and sisters."

Jack boggled a bit. "Glad to hear you're friendly. I'm pretty friendly myself. But is that a large family by your people's standards?"

"It is on the large size of average," Hob said. "There are some families much larger, some much smaller."

"Interesting," Jack repeated. "Do you stay with your families forever, or do you eventually meet that someone, or someones, special and leave home to start a new family? "

"I myself do have a small family of my own," Hob said. "We had a private hatching of three, my wife and I."

"That's very sweet." Jack would have patted the alien on the arm, but it was just a projection, so he didn't. "So, you're society is made up of big families, which are made up of smaller families?"

"That would be accurate, yes," Hob said. "We believe very strongly in family bonds."

"That seems to be pretty common wherever you go. Don't really see the attraction myself, but there you go." Jack smiled and kind of bowed. "Thank you for talking to me, Hob. If I ever meet a Raxacoricofallapatorian, I'll have a better idea of what makes them tick."

"You're welcome," Hob nodded humbly and smiled.
