Wilderness Survival Redux - Week 4 | Thursday Morning, A Clearing in the Woods

The clearing was set up with a number of targets down one end and a table with a number of weapons laid out on it down the other.

"Since take-out stores don't grow on trees, it's likely that stranded in the wild, you'll need to catch your own food," Callisto said. "This is a selection of the kind of weapons to might be able to make and use to accomplish that."

After giving a brief demonstration of each weapon, Callisto continued. "I want you to spend the rest of the class examining these and yes, you can try them out. But do anything stupid, anything at all, and not only will you be spending the rest of the term in detention, you'll wish I'd used these on you."

Bridge really *should* be enjoying the chance to play with weapons. And while he's not stupid enough to be *careless* with them, it is fairly obvious, though, that his mind is on other things.

Walter's not acquainted owith this one at all, so he starts with the atlatl to familiarize himself with its weight and heft.

D picked up the atlatl, turned it over, looked at it, and put it back down.

She really didn't expect to ever be in a situation wherein she'd need to use one.

Since Gwynn has never used a blowgun before, this is the weapon that she starts studying very carefully and thoroughly.

Now a blowgun looked like something that might come in handy the next time she got stuck babysitting her cousins, so D paid a bit more attention to it than she had the atlatl.

Rory bit her lip and picked up the sling, swung it around, and let a rock fly.

It hit a tree straight in the middle of the trunk.

Pleased, Rory tried to hit the same spot again. Sadly, it went about a foot too high this time.

Anders glanced over from where he was working with the slingshot. "Not bad, Gilmore!"

Rory smiled. "Thanks. I don't think I could actually kill something with this, though. I'd eat, like, bark and berries."

"Yeah, I don't think I could either. I try not to be that familiar with my food." Anders frowned down at his slingshot. "And if a bear tries to eat me, this thing is too small to take it down anyway, so I guess our cunning plan is to make sure to only get lost in the wilderness when berries are in season."

"If a bear tried to eat me, I'd totally just play dead," Rory said solemnly. "Or climb a tree. That always works on TV."

Anders had his suspicions about that logic, but refrained from comment. "Don't want to gamble on the chance of it being a friendly helpful bear, huh?"

"I don't think I'm going to meet Winnie the Pooh in the forest here, no," Rory replied with a small smile.

A skipping rope that could kill in more ways than one, D was slightly impressed.

Overconfident from his "success" with the slingshot, Tyler may have been a little careless with the sling.

Or a lot careless, as a rock whizzed near Callisto's head.

Callisto reached out and caught the rock as it passed by her head. "Detention."

Tyler had the general idea that arguing with Callisto on this point would have been stupid. "Fine. Detention."

The slingshot was the only thing Tyler had used before. He picked it up, looked around for a clear shot, and tried firing a few small rocks at a tree trunk.

He needed to work on his accuracy.

Anders picked up a slingshot, because he was too tired to trust himself with the atlatl (even though he'd have liked to play with it purely because "atlatl" was a cool name) or any of the other weapons.

Once he got the hang of the mechanics, he was happy to discover that his aim was almost as good as it had turned out to be with a gun.

The concept of a slingshot seemed simple enough and manageable enough, so D picked up a few pebles and had a go.

Sam grinned when she saw the slingshot, picked it up, chose some pebbles and started aiming for leaves. It had been a while since she'd stolen Mark's, but she eventually remembered how to aim and fire.

She started aiming for specific leaves, just for fun.
