Steath and Deception #4, Wednesday Morning, Dangershop

The students had received a handwaved e-mail to come to the Dangershop in the morning as opposed to Cafe Fina.

When the students arrived, they found themselves in the most varied landscape they had ever seen. Three kinds of forests, two kinds of swamps, a desert, two plains, a snowfield, and an urban environment.

A noticeably clean and shiny urban environment. Complete with a newspaper vending machine with a headline that read "Superman saves Metropolis from Giant Spinning Top!"

Then the students heard some cursing from the side. "How does Barbra deal with these things... wait, here we go."

The clean urban environment shimmered and was replaced by a dark, dilapidated cityscape. The newspaper headline was replaced with "Who is the Batman?"

A man stood up from the console and ran a hand through his hair. "Hi kids. I'm James Gordon, commissioner of the GCPD. I was also in the Special Forces when I was younger, so Alfred asked me to come talk to you guys about cameoflage."

He shrugged off his coat and walked over to the center of the danger room, where a table with a selection of military camouflage options in various sizes was sitting.

"The important thing to remember about camouflage," Gordon said, pushing up his glasses, "is that despite what television may tell you, there is nothing to make you disappear completely. Not even the Batman," he continued, nodding towards the newspaper vending machine, "can pull that off. All it can do is conceal you, force someone to actually look harder to find you. Ideally, you want to be harder to find than they are willing to put into looking."

Gordon looked down into his notes, pushed up his glasses again, and launched into a lecture on millitary camouflage.

"Alright then," he said. "I've got a bunch of environments up to practice on and a selection of uniforms here. Try to match the right camo to the right environment and see if you can find the best place to hide to make maximum use of the camouflage. I should have sizes for everyone here, but if you can't find something in your size, just tell me and I'll see what I can do."

He pulled out a small jar. "I also have camoflage face paint. See if you can figure out how to best use it in conjunction with your camouflage."

[[Wait for le OCD! Have fun kids! Don't break Gordon!]]

"I'm pretty sure it washes off," said Seras, a bit amused at Walter's expression.

She'd suited up already and had dipped her thumb experimentally into a pot of greenish face paint.

Walter stuck his tongue out at her and smirked a little. "I'm certain it does. I'm not afraid of a little paint, remember World Cup?"

He just didn't really see much point in it for himself.

Seras shrugged and held out the paint pot.

"Then what are you waiting for?"

"I'm planning," Walter said and made a silly face at her before taking a smear of black paint and dragging it across his face.

"Ah, basic black," said Seras with a nod, "Very safe choice."

She dipped her fingers in a pot of green paint and made smears beneath her eyes.

Walter wasn't finished yet. He added grey paint to create the effect of dapples of shadow across his face.

"I'm comfortable with basic black. You can't blend in if you're fidgeting after all."

"Unless you're in a room full of figeters. Then you'd stand right out."

Seras looked over and saw the effect Walter was creating.

"Nice," she said, impressed.

"Thanks. I have seen the principal used before." He just needed to remember he wasn't trying to create art.

"And this landscape he's given us doesn't seem to have much in the way of trees."

Seras looked out at the city then down at the green paint on her fingertips.

She made a face.

"True," she conceded, "How do you get that effect?"

Walter shrugged and pointed toward his reflection in the mirror. "The idea is to break up your silhouette, right? So people looking don't see the obvious lines of cheek and jaw and all that. So you just sort of mix things around. Don't follow contours. Go against them, break them up."

Seras took a long look at Walter's face and tried to immitate what he'd done.

"They tried to teach me to use make up in...in the book," she said as he applied greyish paint to her ching, "But, it that was more about bringing out your features than hiding them. This is more fun."

"I'm glad men aren't expected to wear makeup." It was a right pain in the ass from his experience.

Of course, he probably had had to cover up some marks on his face from his messing about with Pippi (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/962709.html?thread=51031189#t51031189), too.

Seras laughed.

"Then you wouldn't have liked it in the book. All the men wore smudgey black kohl about their eyes. It didn't look bad, really...."

Seras trailed off and tilted her head, reminiscing for a moment. Then something caught her eye.

"You've got pink on you."

Walter unlike his icon couldn't imagine voluntarily wearing smudgy black kohl around his eyes.

"Pink?" He peered in the mirror and grabbed some more black to cover it. "Yes, that would be from Pippi."

"Pippi has some interesting ideas about camoflage."

"There's no one quite like her," Walter said, making the last of the pink disappear under black and grey paint.

"Although I do hope Alfred doesn't review footage of this."

Re: Uniforms and Paint

[identity profile] union-jane.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"I think Alfred is too big a man to bother you over a bit of pink face paint."

Re: Uniforms and Paint

[identity profile] walter-n-wires.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"It was the lipstick fight that led to it he might disapprove." He shrugged and finished his face paint. "It's alright. Never do something you uaren't willing to pay for."

Re: Uniforms and Paint

[identity profile] union-jane.livejournal.com 2006-08-03 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Seras tilted her head and smoothed the black smudges under her ears.

"That's hard when you don't know the price up front..."

Re: Uniforms and Paint

[identity profile] walter-n-wires.livejournal.com 2006-08-03 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
"It's possible to guess most of the time." Walter shrugged. "And if not, what do you do? Complain that life isn't fair? I certainly didn't guess the price of stealing those statues, but I did and the consequences happened."

Re: Uniforms and Paint

[identity profile] union-jane.livejournal.com 2006-08-03 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Seras shrugged.

"Life isn't fair," she said, matter of factly, "I think it's perfectly okay to complain about that, every so often. So long as it's not all you do."

Re: Uniforms and Paint

[identity profile] walter-n-wires.livejournal.com 2006-08-03 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
"As you wish." Walter was satisfied with his results and gave Seras a nod. "Time to go be invisible."

Re: Uniforms and Paint

[identity profile] union-jane.livejournal.com 2006-08-03 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
As she wished? Well, no. But, it was as it was.

Seras nodded.

"Right. Let us adjourn to the playing fields of Eton."

Or the Danger shop. Whichever.
