First Aid II, Danger Shop, Tuesday Morning

Elliot is scratching at some small pink bumps on her arms and ankle as she waits for the class to file in, but she makes herself stop when they're there.

"Hey. So if any of you were total idiots, like your teacher, and went on a hike this weekend without insect repellent, you might be learning that one of the many joys of summer in what used to be a swamp is mosquitoes. So, y'know, I decided to tie the session to the season and talk about animal and insect bites this week.

Mosquito bites are just insanely annoying, they won't really do anything. Well, unless you scratch them into an infection. Here's a good handout on insect bites. With a bee sting, you want to get the stinger out as fast as you can and then apply a cold pack, and give an antihistamine, like benadryl, or apply calamine lotion for itching. And eventually -- possibly after too long, if you're the one with the sting -- it'll go away.

Sometimes you do need to go to the doctor, though. Like, with a sting anywhere in the mouth? Get immediate medical attention or it can cause severe swelling that may block airways. And some people are allergic to bee stings; with them, you'll usually see wheezing or difficulty breathing, tightness in the throat or chest, swelling of the lips, dizziness or fainting or nausea or vomiting. They need medical care; inject them with an epi-pen if they carry one, but otherwise get them to the hospital ASAP.

And, of course, some people might think an insect bite is easy next to a bite from a dog, cat, or other mammal. Here's a handout about that. Basically, what you want to do with an animal bite is: Calm and reassure the person, but glove up or wash hands thoroughly before attending to the wound, and wash your hands afterwards as well. If the bite is not bleeding severely, wash the wound thoroughly with mild soap and running water for 3 to 5 minutes. Then, cover the bite with antibiotic ointment and a clean dressing. If the bite is actively bleeding, apply direct pressure with a clean, dry cloth until the bleeding subsides. Elevate the area of the bite. If the bite is on the hand or fingers, or on any other sensitive area, like the face or genitals, they need medical care. Over the next 24 to 48 hours, observe the bite for signs of infection (increasing skin redness, swelling, and pain). If the bite becomes infected, call the doctor or take the person to an emergency facility. And ditto if you do not know for sure the animal is rabies-free. Because foaming at the mouth? Not as much fun as it might sound."

Elliot smiled at her class. "I've been really nice to the Danger Shop all week, so I think the simulators are working again. Get out there and treat some fake victims. Pair up or work in threes if you want."

Hermione just hopes her victim doesn't have an allergy to stings or bites. Though it would be a valuable learning experience.

It's a chihuahua, Hermione can handle that. She walks over to the old man and says, "Hold still."

About two seconds after reaching for the animal, though, Hermione stops, pauses just long enough to put on the gloves that she brings with her in case of badger, and then tries to remove the chihuahua's teeth from the man's hand.

It does get yappy, and as she's holding the dog, Hermione's suddenly really aware she only has two hands. "If it doesn't appear to be rabid, should I let the dog go, or should there be some sort of... containment?" she wonders, and is already looking at the bite to see how bad it is.

[I'm good with it! =)]

"Can you make it quiet, too?" Hermione asks, setting the dog down and going to the man instead.

"We need to clean this," she says, leading him to a sink where she can begin washing the wound.

The teenage guy with the badger bite on his ankle seemed to be a good place to start. Especially after the guy started shouting and flailing at a hornet and then started to puff up like a puffer fish after being stung.

Walter ignored the bite and tried to understand from the guy's flailing what he was trying to communicate.

Why did he want a pen? Ohhh, an epi-pen. He injected the guy with the epi-pen, checked to make sure he was still breathing, called the Danger Shop's 911, and pulled on a pair of gloves before cleaning out the badger bite while he waited for the imaginary ambulance to arrive.

Somehow Peter managed to find a toddler running headlong after a very unhappy cat. For some reason the kitty didn't want to be loved and hugged and called George. So when the little girl managed to capture the cat in a big, slobbery embrace, the cat clawed and bit to get its way free.

Now there was screaming.

Peter hurried over to the screaming toddler and tried to check the wounds and wash them while convincing the child she really didn't want to fo after Kitty again.

Parker did an about-face. "I'll just go find a shark-bite victim, okay?"

Peter laughed. "Or you could find a wolf and tell him what big teeth he has."

Parker stuck her tongue out at him, looking around for other victims. "Red won that one, so why not. Better wolves and sharks than Screaming Mimi there. Yiiiikes."

[ooc: and damn, called back to work. Must pick up later]

"Pish," Peter said, laughing. "Screaming Mimi here is going to grow up to be a valued member of society. Which is more than one can say for a shark."

"It's a valued member of the ecosystem. So are wolves. Culling the herd, keeping biodiversity alive--" Parker winced as Mimi hit a high note. "Restraining the population!"

Lana was a bit distracted as she couldn't stop worrying about Phoebe and the whole Cole situation. She looked around for someone to help and settled on a youngish man who'd been bitten in the ankle by a very irate german shepard.

Isabel took care of the woman who'd been bitten by a bee while gardening. She kept watch to see if the woman would have an allergic reaction.

Briar went to help out the elderly woman who had been bitten by a dog she stopped to pet. By sheer luck, she decided that it was all his fault and was hitting him with her handbag as he tried to treat the bite.

The first victim Z encountered was a toddler wailing and apparently having an allergic reaction to an insect bite. Her first thought was, Oh heck no, but she sighed and fished an epi-pen out of her first aid kit. "Hang on, sweetie," she said, and stuck the kid. This made her wail more, but but the allergic reaction began to subside.
