Wilderness Survival Redux - Week 3 | Thursday Morning, A Clearing in the Woods

Callisto had two lock boxes today, rather than just one. "Shoes in the first box, clothes in the second, everything except your underwear." The expression on her face suggested that anyone who objected would lose the underwear too.

After everyone had removed their clothing and placed it in the box, Callisto continued "If you spend a prolonged period of time in the wilderness, then it is more than likely whatever clothing you were wearing at the time will come under a considerable amount of wear and tear, especially if it wasn't designed for the environment you're in. The results can be… unpleasant to say the least.

"Luckily, it is possible to repair, and even make clothing from items found in the wilderness. Animal skins, some kinds of tree barks, vines, sinew. The possibilities, if not endless, are at least more varied than you'd think. Even luckier for you, I'm not making you hunt and forage for the raw materials.

"I think you can guess the rest of today's lesson. Use the materials I've provided to make garments to replace the ones you were wearing before. I know the equipment might be a primitive compared to what some of you may be used to, all bone needles and stone knives, but well, you'll just have to deal."

"Get to it," Callisto said. "And as an extra incentive, you're not getting your clothes back until next week, so make sure that you put a decent effort into the clothes."

Anders grinned from where he was trying on his extremely haphazard kilt; he'd decided to forego the stupid sack-shirt for now, because hey, he could work on his tan a bit. "Should we make you one of those flower necklaces too?"

"Not unless you're going to make it an entire flower shirt." But hey, he could make a sort of poncho using the same basic idea of strips hanging from a belt around his neck.

"It'd dry up in the heat anyway," Anders decided. "Personally with this whole kilt thing, I'm more worried about what happens when my underwear in theory wears out."

"I'm just glad I wore some," Walter said, grinning over at Anders. "And I don't intend to ever end up in a situation where my theoretical underwear would wear out."

"Neither do I," Anders said with probably more emphasis than strictly necessary. "Which is a good thing, because animal-skin underwear would chafe, and leaves would cut, and either way that's too much pain and discomfort for me to deal with."

"The Scots don't wear anything under their kilts. You'd just have to make a good one." Maybe fur side in...

Okay, skip that thought.

"There could be certain advantages to that . . ."

Well, depending who you were stuck in the wilderness with, anyway.

"The Scots seem to think so. Add a sporran and a bad attitude and you're ready for anything."

Re: Clothes Making (WSR - Wk3)

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-07-27 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Anders had no idea what a sporran was, but he did think this might bear further looking into. "This could be an interesting lifestyle choice, yes."

Walter shrugged. Kilts (http://www.utilikilts.com/) weren't really his thing even if his mun found few things hotter but the Scots seemed to like them fine.

"Nothing like a cold breeze blowing on your bum, yes."

Okay, that part didn't sound so appealing.

"Heh," Anders said. "Well, interesting didn't necessarily have to mean good."

Woooo, UtiliKilts! Me wantses.

Walter shrugged and set the leaf hat he'd been working on on his head. "That's true. Getting the snot beaten out of you can be interesting, but not especially good, for instance."

Re: Clothes Making (WSR - Wk3)

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-07-27 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"Love the hat." Anders grinned. "And I like to keep my snot where it is. Er . . . you know what I mean."

Re: Clothes Making (WSR - Wk3)

[identity profile] walter-n-wires.livejournal.com 2006-07-27 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Walter laughed and started threading more leaves for his leaf poncho idea. "I know what you mean. How are things with you other than your snot?"

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-07-27 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"Pretty good, actually," Anders said, attempting to braid a few vines together for a belt, as his kilt wasn't exactly a perfect fit. "It was an interesting trip home, workshops are okay . . . I can't complain, really."

Re: Clothes Making (WSR - Wk3)

[identity profile] walter-n-wires.livejournal.com 2006-07-27 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"You know, that's what people say when they think they shouldn't complain, but they might want to do it anyway." Like he couldn't complain about how things were with Nadia now.

Re: Clothes Making (WSR - Wk3)

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-07-27 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Anders looked at him thoughtfully. "No, honestly, I'm feeling better than I have in over a month now. Compared to a couple of weeks ago, I seriously can't."

Re: Clothes Making (WSR - Wk3)

[identity profile] walter-n-wires.livejournal.com 2006-07-27 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
"Good." Walter wasn't going to say he envied that, even if he did. "So you'll be here for school for a while longer and then go back to Caprica?"

Re: Clothes Making (WSR - Wk3)

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-07-28 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Anders nodded. "So far, that's the plan, yep. Unless I decide to stay here and play baseball instead. Although I'm thinking that's probably not happening."

"You're quite an athlete, it sounds. What will you do if you don't play a professional sport?"

Re: Clothes Making (WSR - Wk3)

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-07-28 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
"Honestly, I have no idea," Anders admitted. "It's about the only thing I know to do with myself."

Re: Clothes Making (WSR - Wk3)

[identity profile] walter-n-wires.livejournal.com 2006-07-28 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
"Then the world is your oyster," Walter said and finished up his "poncho," pulling it over his head. "I don't think fashion designer will be in my future."

Re: Clothes Making (WSR - Wk3)

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-07-28 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
"Maybe not, but you'll probably be the most styling survivor in the wilderness," Anders replied, grinning at the poncho.

Re: Clothes Making (WSR - Wk3)

[identity profile] walter-n-wires.livejournal.com 2006-07-28 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
Walter stood up and executed a fashion model turn, laughing at himself and the situation. "Just not sunburned to hell will do.

"Right then. Time to show the teacher my creation and see whether she'll give me my clothes back or not. I'll be seeing you."

Re: Clothes Making (WSR - Wk3)

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-07-28 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
Anders applauded a little bit and went back to fiddling with his own outfit. "Good luck with that, dude."
