Advanced Computers #3, Wednesday Afternoon 7/26

The computer lab is meeting outside today under a tent with Help Desk emblazoned across the front. Each student has their own workstation complete with phone, toolbox and nifty pocket protector.

"As you can see by my mad sign making skillz, we're going to be manning the help desk today." Abby smiled. "As geeks there is a 99.9% chance that someone is going to ask you to fix their computer. Seriously guys, it's going to happen. You need to know your stuff. Not only how to fix technology...but how to deal with people who don't know how to use it."

"Three rules you have to remember." Abby paced and raised her fingers as she counted them off. "One, not everyone is a geek so remember to tone down the techspeak. Two, people will do incredibly stupid things to their computer, try not to cry over the phone when they tell they've never done a virus scan. Three, the first response is always reboot. It doesn't matter that the problem couldn't be solved by that, it's always the first response."

"Okay, the phone lines are open and people can walk in with a problem. Remember the rules, be polite and come to me if there's a problem you can't fix."

[ooc: Post is up and ready to play! I've got an early appointment so I won't be around till later in the day, but you should all be able to play with each other. Have fun!]

"I have a dog," Fraser says, levelling a glance at Diefenbaker.

"Can your dog program the VCR?" asks Conner. It's totally not a possibility he'd rule out at all, around here.

"Doubtful," Fraser answers. "He'd probably try to eat it."

"Oh. Hmm." Conner scratches his head. He's suddenly realized that while he has no problem programming a VCR himself, actually explaining it to anyone else is a completely different story. "That would defeat the purpose. Well, um, it's hooked up right and everything, right?"

"The power button is lit up," Fraser says. "And I'm getting a readout of the current time on the panel."

Well, that takes care of the "is it turned on" question. "You have a tape in it and everything, right? Is it just not recording what you want it to, or is the programming menu giving you trouble?"

"I'm trying to set it up to record for a later date," Fraser says. "And I'm unsure as to how to tell it to not record immediately but to wait and record at a preset time."

"Well, huh. There should be a button on the remote that says 'Menu.' And then from there you should be able to set the timer," Conner replies.

"Oh dear," Fraser says. "That might be a problem..."

Uh oh. "You do have the remote, right?" Conner asks.

"Excuse me for just a moment." Conner puts him on hold and headdesks, just three times, but very heartily. "Okay. You'll probably need a new remote. And a chew toy for your dog while you're at it, I think."

"So there's no way to record the documentary on geese in Canada until I purchase a new remote control?" Fraser asks sadly.

"Get someone else to tape it for you?" suggests Conner, boggling a little bit, because geese? "I highly recommend TiVo, too. Much easier."
