Lying and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them, Class #3

"Hello!" Jarod waved to the gathered students. The bandage was gone from his head, but the stitches were still visible. "Today we'll be learning about how to keep a secret, and I mean a real secret here, one that someone's life is depending on, by telling the truth."

"The kicker here is that someone will be asking you questions, trying to find out what the secret is. It's your job to answer their questions as completely as possible, but to still keep that secret. Then you'll switch. You'll each pick a secret of your own, and write it down on a piece of paper before you start. Then, your partner will write down what they think the secret is when they're finished, and show it to you. I'm trusting you to tell them if they got it right."

"Also, please feel free to have some coffee, juice, fruit, and bagels," he gestured at the table behind him.

Jarod hid his smile. "Sorry, Joxer. Looks like you're stuck with me. But you'll only have to keep the secret, not guess one."

Joxer nodded. "Okay," He quickly scribbled his secret down. "So, you just ask me questions about it?"

Jarod nodded and studied Joxer. "Does this have something to do with you being in a battle?"

Joxer laughed. "I wouldn't keep any of my battles a secret. No point in being victorius if you can't brag about it."

"Hmmmm." Jarod frowned in thought. "A woman?"

"Close, but not really," Joxer said.

"A guy?" Hey, it was possible.

"Yeah," Joxer said. "As much as you can call him one."

"Is this someone you're involved with, romantically?"

Joxer looked disgusted. "No, not at all! That'd be wrong!"

Jarod rolled his eyes. "Is this person a member of your family?"

"Unfortunately," Joxer said.

That looked a bit like the face Parker made when she was talking about her father. "Problems with an authority figure?"

Joxer shook his head. "S'about the only family I've got that I don't look up to," he said.

"Brother? Uncle?" Jarod asked.

"Brother," Joxer said. "Younger, actually." He facepalmed. "I wasn't supposed to give that away, was I?"

"So far, all you've told me is that you have a younger brother you don't get along with," Jarod tried to reassure him. "Was that your secret?"

"Most of it," Joxer said. "There's stuff about him that I. . ." He stopped himself. "Almost gave it away, heh."

Jarod smiled. "We don't have to continue, if this is making you uncomfortable. I really don't mean to pry."

Joxer nodded his head. "I made a pact with my other brother that we weren't supposed to talk about him in public," he said. "So I guess I really shouldn't tell you about Jace, and how he likes other boys, yeah."

Jarod wondered if it was too late to have a remedial class. "No, that probably would be for the best."

"Thanks for partnering up with me," Joxer said.

"You're very welcome."
