The Kludge's Guide to the Universe | Dangershop, Wednesday Afternoon (Week 2)

Wednesday afternoon once again found Harper in the dangershop, with his feet up and a can of Sparky.

After the class had signed in and found places to sit or lean, Harper stood up. "All right, last week we studied team-building. Today comes the important collaterally to team building, a little thing I like to call threat recognition."

"Now you don't want any team you might build to be made of people who'll throw you to the Magog the first chance they get. Unfortunately, in this big, bad, universe, people don't go around wearing signs proclaiming their back-stabbing abilities. In fact they'll go to great lengths to hide it until they can take advantage of you. For example the hot babe charmed by your wit might really be a phase-shifting, tesseracting, servant of evil, or your ship's avatar's slimy new robot boyfriend might really be a psychotic High Guard warship, intent on wiping out all spacefaring life from the universe." Harper did not sound the least bit bitter of those two examples. Really.

"Clearly, if you want to survive, and not end up dead or worse, you have to find a way to uncover the level of threat someone poses to you," Harper said. "Which brings me to the lesson."

Harper fiddled with his remote and three people appeared at the front of the room.

The first was a furry, batfaced creature, with nasty sharp pointy teeth and large claws, dressed in a robe.

The second was a tall, muscular man with a stern expression, laden with weapons. An astute observer would have notice three nasty looking bone spurs sticking out of each forearm.

The third was…purple. And bouncy. With a forked tail.



"These are Rev, Tyr, and Trace," Harper said, pointing at each in turn. "Your job today is to determine who exactly out of these three is the most dangerous, and why."

"Yeah, but they do just give him that air of being supremly dangerous," John says.

Molly looked at the three carefully. Harper said most dangerous, not the one that was an immediate danger.

"I'm going to guess the purple girl. Trance," she finally said.

Another shake of the head. "She has to have been included for a reason," Molly said. "Overlooking the little girl is never a good idea." She gave Jamie a knowing grin.

Janet studied them all. "Purple and with a tail isn't necessarily a designation of danger, the bumpy alien is dressed like a monk, and Mr. Muscles in the middle carries himself like a soldier. Also, he has a lot of weapons." She crossed her arms and frowned at the three aliens. "I've never seen bouncy, cheerful evil aliens. Except for one, and she had amnesia. I'm going to go with Mr. Muscles."

Cameron was sitting at the back of the class, very low in his seat. He was going to go with Rev, but the bouncy thingie stood weirdly out. Not that he was going to say anything out loud as that would draw attention to him being in the class.

When Molly spotted Cameron, she quietly moved to sit near him. Putting her elbow on the desk, she leaned her head on her hand and looked at him. "Jack must be even smoother than I heard he was," she said.

Molly bit her lip to keep from laughing. "How did you go from almost fighting to him putting you to bed?" she asked.

Sam raised an eyebrow at that. That you and Jack went drinking and he came back blitzed and talking about thingies. Why? What else should I know?

"Dangerous in what respect," muttered Elizabeth to herself. She glanced over the three figures again and shrugged. "Tyr, going on the definition that it's physical danger and he's loaded with weapons. And sort of reminds me of a guy I knew."
