Advanced Computers #2, Wednesday Afternoon 7/19

Abby stood at the front of the computer lab, holding a gong and mallet. The seating arrangement had each student facing another at tables with space for their laptops in between.

"Today we're going to dig deep and discover the inner hacker in all of us. You're going to race to hack into a specific site and insert a code. Whoever gets the code dropped first wins." Abby leaned forward eagerly and grinned at the students. "But that would be too boring. So you're going to pair up and fight against each other at the same time. Trace your enemy's presence in the computer system, track them and fight them. Either kick them out of the system or keep them occupied long enough that you can win."

"Rules are simple and few. The battleground is in cyberspace, it's not fair if you try to hamper your partner by throwing something at his head or giving him a wedgie. The sites that you're going to be hacking are sorta important...let's try not to bring them down. Third rule: the code you're dropping is basically my signature. It's harmless. I would prefer if that's all you left in the computer systems."

Abby sat back up on her desk and smacked the gong with the mallet. "Bang a gong, it's on!"

[ooc: This class is about interaction more than computer terminology, so handwavey computer terms are fine. It's a fight between you and your partner, so regular fight rules apply. You can direct an attack...not an outcome. If Willow throws a virus at Mac, it's up to Mac to decide whether she got kicked offline. If you want your character to get info from the sites, that's fine. Abby doesn't mind if you snoop, just don't break the system...she'll be watching out for that.]

Willow geared up to take Bridge and NCIS on in a BATTLE TO THE DEATH.

Or hacker war. Whatever.

Re: NCIS

[identity profile] bridge-carson.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Bridge rubs his hands together. He's not gonna do that thing where you spit on them, though, because 1) gross and 2) wearing gloves anyway. "Ready?" he asks.

Re: NCIS

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Willow wrigggled her fingers over her keyboard in a buttery challenging fashion. "I believe now is when we say 'bring it'. Also 'I don't mean any of this personally it's just that me and computers rank highly as an OTP'."

Re: NCIS

"Right," Bridge nods. "Ditto on that."

"In which case, eat my DOS," Willow replied, going for the pun over accuracy since, you know, Mac-user. She started hacking into NCIS.

Re: NCIS

[identity profile] bridge-carson.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Bridge snickers at the pun, but then narrows his eyes and starts concentrating on hacking into NCIS and attempting to track down Willow's trail into the system at the same time.

Re: NCIS

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
He'd probably have some luck finding that trail, since Willow was deliberately leaving one behind her. Of course it also had a few surprises in store for anyone who came across it, and was a bit of a decoy from the trail she was actually using.

Re: NCIS

[identity profile] bridge-carson.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Bridge has to admit, that's an impressive bit of code. Of course, having a laptop from the future meant it was pretty easy to isolate said code and prevent it from doing any harm. On the other hand, even the slightest fraction of a second is important when it comes to things like this, so Willow's probably got a fairly good lead right now.

"Decoy. Nice work," he comments absently as he tries to figure out where she'll go next. A few keystrokes, and Willow *might* be finding an obstacle in her path right about now.

Re: NCIS

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"Why thank you," Willow said. Willow noticed the obstacle and pondered various things to do with it. She decided to send it in Bridge's direction. Not because that would stop him, but it might delay him enough that he wouldn't notice her setting up a few more traps for him.

Re: NCIS

[identity profile] bridge-carson.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Bridge frowns as he notices his own trap being sent back his way, shuts it down, and continues going down his own path through the system.

Re: NCIS

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Willow makes with the sneaky and tries to predict where Bridge is going.

If she guesses right he's going to run into another obstacle.

If he runs directly into it it shall be shaped like a wall of bunnies.

Re: NCIS

[identity profile] bridge-carson.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
WTF, wall of bunnies? Bridge decides the best approach is to (metaphorically) barrel through headfirst.

Re: NCIS

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
The bunnies explode into pixels, but not before giving sad and horrified bunny faces because ZOMG HE KILLED THEM!

Occasionally Willow's imagination gets away from her.

Re: NCIS

[identity profile] bridge-carson.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, the sad bunnies was just playing dirty. Bridge decides to send something that bears a suspicious resemblance to one of these (http://pics.livejournal.com/bridge_carson/pic/0005zy84/) at Willow.

Re: NCIS

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"Neat!" Willow said, appreciatively. She pondered this challenge and tried the hacking equivilant of kicking it in the crotch.

She was a little braver and more forthright when she had a keyboard in front of her.

Re: NCIS

[identity profile] bridge-carson.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"Modeled on what we use back home, for live fights and stuff." Bridge explains.

And if she'd tried that in real life, it wouldn't have worked, because 1) Zords are several stories tall and 2) they're made of metal. But in the cyber-world, it does work, and the pseudo-Zord disappears.

Re: NCIS

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"Cool!" Willow said. "Are they like robot warriors or are they teeny?"

She can see her goal in sight. She sets another trap for Bridge and tries to make it there before he does."

Re: NCIS

[identity profile] bridge-carson.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"Very, very big. Like, skyscraper big." Bridge says, frowning absently in thought as he makes an attempt to maneuver around the trap.

Re: NCIS

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
"How do they get around without knocking things over?" Willow asked. She sent a fairly harmless virus Bridge's way to make sure he stayed behind her.

Re: NCIS

[identity profile] bridge-carson.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"Lots and lots of practice." Bridge is distracted by the virus, and manages to quarantine it before it can do much more than change his desktop settings. He hopes. "Of course, the bad guys aren't usually so considerate."

Re: NCIS

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"I guess that's why they call them bad guys and not - HA! Made it!" Willow did a little fist-pump of pride as she reached her goal and dropped her code. "Go me!"

Re: NCIS

[identity profile] bridge-carson.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yay you!" Bridge cheers, giving Willow a thumbs-up. "Er, wait. No... darn you for defeating me in battle." He tries, shaking his fist.

Re: NCIS

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"I shall be a gracious winner and not taunt you mercilessly," Willow said. "Instead you may join me in my chair dance."

Willow wriggled her butt in her chair.

Re: NCIS

[identity profile] bridge-carson.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Bridge sways a little bit, wiggling his fingers. He seems to be taking defeat fairly well.

"I think it's safe to say my talents lie more in the area of building things," he comments.

Re: NCIS

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-07-19 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"That robot looked pretty cool," Willow said, with geniune admiration.
