Writing Workshop - 7/18 - Journalism Classroom - Tuesday Morning

Chloe was totally awake for class this morning. Of course, the fact that she was clinging to her coffee cup like it was her best friend probably had something to do with that.

"Hey you guys, welcome back," she said once both of her students had arrived. "I'm happy to see you survived the weekend."

"So, last week we talked about writing biographies. This week, we're going to be flipping the subject a little, and talk about obituaries," she explained, giving them each a handout. "I don't know about the two of you, but where I come from, everyone dies at some point."

"What I want you to do today is write an obituary, either for yourself, or for someone else." Chloe smirked. "I know it sounds a bit morbid, but if you want, you can write about someone who you wish was dead. I certainly won't hold that against you."

Anders signed in.

Anders blinked at Kaylee. "Survived the weekend? What the frak did I miss?"

One ~~totally handwaved la la la~~ 77-word biography assignment from S.T. Anders got turned in. ~~Wonky sentence structure here for variety's sake.~~

Kaylee signed in.

"Oh, creepy things came to town and stole our voices," Kaylee explained.

"Stole everybody's voices?" Anders scratched his head. "This wouldn't happen to have started really, really late Friday night, would it?"

"I think that might have been when it started, yeah," Kaylee said.

"Well, frak, they must've gotten ours on our way out of town then," Anders mumbled. "Least it wasn't an evil airplane flight, I guess."

"It was crazy," Kaylee added. "We had to go back to the dorms for a lockdown. The things that stole our voices were real dangerous."

"But nobody died or anything, right?" asked Anders, looking slightly panicked. "I mean, everybody's okay now?"

"No one died," Kaylee assured. "Some people got attacked, but they'll be alright."

"Good," he said. "I mean, not that they got attacked. Just that everyone's going to be okay. Kinda glad I missed it, but wow, going on vacation sucks when you can't talk."

"I carried a notebook and pen around with me all weekend," Kaylee said. "Sorry you couldn't talk on your vacation. Where'd ya go?"

"Boston," Anders replied. "Baseball and a little tourism. Luckily we had a laptop and a Palm Pilot with us so we weren't completely helpless, but we still got some really funny looks. Plus I forgot that you have to be twenty-one to drink pretty much anywhere but here. What a pain."

"Sounds nice...I mean except for the not talking part," Kaylee said. "You gotta be twenty-one? Really?"

"Apparently," Anders said. "It's kind of a dumb rule if you ask me. But try explaining to people that you didn't know that, when you can't talk. They'll throw you out of the bar. I should've known the 'I'm from another planet' line wouldn't have gone over well in the first place."

"I'm thinking 'I'm from 500 years in the future' wouldn't work either," Kaylee said, frowning.

"It works fine here," Anders replied with a shrug. "Anywhere off the island though? Not so much."

"Guess I'll remember that when...and if...I go off the island."

"Might be a good idea, yeah."

Tim sat clandestinely in the back of the room.

"Obituaries eh."
