Cameron's story took a more Shakespearian turn. Alexander challenged Clark to a duel to life an death. As Clark was just a farmboy, Alexander gave him three weeks to prepare for the battle while he kept Chlois locked up in the highest tower of his castle to prevent her from seeing Clark again.
Three weeks later, right after sunrise, Alexander and Clark met on the fields outside of the castle for their duel. From her one and only window, Chlois could see the fight. It was brutal and lasted until sunrise when finally Clark delivered an awesome blow to Alexander's shield and the prince went down. As Clark approached Alexander to give him the final blow, Alexander drew his dagger and cut him in the leg. Clark however spared Alexander's life and only asked that Chlois would be let free so they could be happy together. At the request, Alexander started laughing and dropped the dagger to the grass. He explained to Clark that he'd let Chlois go, but that the dagger had been poisoned and before sunrise the next day, Clark would be dead as there was no cure for the poison.
Clark took Chlois away from the castle. They spent their last night together and when sunrise came, Clark had died. Chlois buried him and then set off on a journey. No one ever saw her again. Alexander went mad with grief for his one true love and let himself be used by his father to do mean and ugly things.
