Things to Do at the Beach, Galactica Point, Friday Morning

"Good morning," Jarod smiled, and gestured to where some nets were set up. "Today's activity is beach volleyball. However, if that doesn't interest you at all, feel free to make sandcastles, play in the water, go kayaking, or pair up and go out in canoes. Stay close to shore, though, since the weather is still a bit iffy."

He distributed some handouts. "Next week we'll be sailing, so please review your knots, especially the bowline, and review this information about Sunfish and the glossary of sailing terms, since that's what you'll be sailing."

"Woo-hoo! Sandcastle!"

Fry was a little obsessed with the sandcastles. He was determined to make one that didn't fall over and that actually looked like a castle by the end of the class.

Or maybe he'd get bored and writing dirty words in the sand.

"Need some help?" Jude asked, wandering over.

Fry was a slacker at heart, and so the offer from someone to do part of the work was always welcome. "Sure. I'm building a castle. Made out of sand."

While many who weren't Jude would have rolled their eyes and uttered something along the lines of, "Thanks, Tips," this was Jude. Who simply grinned and said, "Awesome, bro. Where should I start?"

"I don't know, I've never built a proper sandcastle before. Maybe we should make something to hold the towers up?"

Jude shrugged. "Sure." He grinned. "Usually I start with a really big pile of wet sand and then try to make it look like something. Oooh! And a moat. It needs a moat. And flags."

"Yeah! Hey, you're good at this." Fry dumped a bucket of water on some sand.

"Just lots of practice, bro," Jude chuckled, starting to form a pile a safe distance away from the water. "Went camping with my friends a lot."

"I didn't go camping much unless you count the time me and my brother Yancy got lost in Central Park. But there was a carousel there, so I don't think that counts."

"From New York?" Jude asked, rapidly heightening their mound.

"Yeah, originally. Then New New York." Fry added more water and got more sand.

"Where's that?" Jude asked curiously, pausing up to his elbows in wet sand, his brow furrowing.

"Same place as New York, only a thousand years in the future."

Jude nodded, unphased. "Cool. I'm from Toronto. Current Toronto. New Amsterdam? Whatever."

"That's like in a different country, right?"

Jude sighed. "Canada."

"Wow, cool! Do you have a pet moose?"

Sigh. "No. And no, I don't live in an igloo, we do have summer, and yes, we use the twenty-four hour clock."

"Wow," Fry said again as if Jude had told him something stunning. "That's so cool!"

Jude blinked. "Okay. Whatever you say, bro." Dig, dig, begin to form parapets and multi-tiered defenses because all boys are secretly tactical nerds at heart . . .

Isabel isn't tanning so much as sitting in the sun on the beach frantically running through her lists to make sure she's thought of everything for Tuesday.
