Arts & Crafts Workshop #6, Camp Dining Hall, 06.26.06, Afternoon

The Tick grinned as the students walked in. "Just as a reminder, chums, next week will be a scrapbook review! Please try to get your books finished by by the time the workshop starts."

"This week, we'll be working on putting together a powerful friend. You'll notice that in front of you, you have four pieces of wood linked to a plank by tiny chains. If you look closely, you might notice that those pieces are arms and legs. If you look even closer to that, you might notice a face waiting to come out! Today you'll be bringing life to your very own Little Wooden Boy! Using the tools in front of you, you have to give him a face. Using the tools inside your head, you have to give him a name. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me or-" Tick pulled a wooden figure of his own out from under the table, "- ask Little Wooden Boy IV!"

"This week for your scrapbooks, we're focusing on a certain phrase: 'you can't judge a book by it's cover.' While it's a reasonable saying for many things, it doesn't count in scrapbooks. In scrapbooking, the cover is the outer extension of everything that's inside! The cover should be as much a piece of art as anything on the inside. Mine is a simple blue, but if you look carefully you'll see a really keen antennae pattern in it. You don't have to get that detailed, but we need something for the front of the book that says your name in a non-literal fashion!"

Hamlet just stares in disbelief at the wooden doll for a couple of minutes. After taking a deep breath and deciding to just go with it, he paints on a kind of familiar looking face (http://www.bluesweatshirt.com/images/domokun_face.jpg).

Hamlet wraps his scrapbook cover in black fabric, and draws on a sword and a crown in gold marker. He hopes that that makes his book distinctive enough.

Hamlet tries to pose his LWB in a kind of attack position -- or at least as much of one as you can stick them in.

"I've named him 'Horvendill'. It's the name of a famous historical danish king."

Now, this was interesting. Creating her new friend's face (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v719/skylie/face.jpg) wasn't too complex: anime eyes, grin, and a kick-ass scar.

But, feeling a little inspired, Sakurazaki also adds a tuque, a braid in back, and fashions a magical wand to put in its hand. Her LWB is now a conglomeration of lovers best friends.

Sakurazaki makes the cover of her scrapbook look like wood paneling, and then decorates it softly with accents of Japanese script and a demure Japanese art-print style sketching on each side. Typically, she'd draw the wave or something water themed, but that would be highly inappropriate, so one side is a cherry tree with whisps of light blossoms blowing in the wind. The other is an attempt to recreate the Kansai Magic Association's head temple in Kyoto.

Sakurazaki waves her LWB's wand in the air a little as she shows him off.

"I call him Konjunma." She giggles, fiercely impressed with her conglomeration skills.

Tempe's painting skills leave something to be desired, but she tries her hardest to put something that looks like a face onto the little wooden boy's head.

Copius amounts of glitter are being used.

Tempe wraps her cover in three pieces of fabric (in a stripey-like pattern). The first piece is neon green, the second neon pink, and the third neon orange.

She then used some glittery fabric paint to put her name (in fancy, artsy-looking writing) on the front.

In the spaces above and below the letters, she used more fabric paint (in an assortment of colours), to draw different items that she felt represented her: bones, a bucket of glitter, a weetiny falcon (which she attempted, mostly successfully, to put some feathers on), two stick people holding hands to represent her and Sawyer, a book, a notebook, and a group of stick people talking while she sat off to the side, taking notes (she figured this could represent anthropology).

By the time she was done, she was exhausted. But the cover looked very pretty!

Tempe's LWB had a very nice-looking happy face on it. The eyes were decorated with blue glitter, and she'd also attempted to give it some slightly scruffy-looking hair.

"I think I'll call him...Jack the Little Wooden Waffle Guy."

She couldn't help it, she'd had waffles before she came to the workshop and they were really good. Naming little wooden boys after them good, apparently.

All Jaye needs are two dots for the eyes and a smile, and she's ready to go. And she's totally not sitting with the Little Wooden Boy in her lap.

Jaye's cover is covered in orange fabric. She's simplistic today.

Jaye makes her Little Wooden Boy wave. "This is Dave," she introduces him.

Sakurazaki has her camcorder in hand; she's pretty much resolved that it won't be too far out of her sight all week. She had a lot of work to do. And that included talking to Professor the Tick.

"Um, excuse me, sensei, but I was wondering something. I've noticed that you're very big on justice. Would you mind saying a few words for my documentary regarding anything you might have to share about weapons and justice and training and things like that?"

She holds up the camera for further explaination.

Seras set to work on her LWB, trying very hard not to find this kinda creepy.

Maybe it was the swingy arms and legs thing....

Seras covered her scrapbook in cheerful yellow cloth.

She decorated that with clippings from magazines--footballers, police type stuff, anything that struck her fancy.

Then, she covered that with a layer of very sheer goldish fabric and attached a green rippon to each side of the cover so that she could tie it together.

It's difficult for Sakurazaki not to snerk from behind the camera, because the microphone would surely pick it up. She does a very good job of keeping reserved, though.

"Thank you very much, sensei!" she responds brightly after getting the footage. "Your words will be very helpful!"
