Things to Do at the Beach, Friday Morning, Galactica Point

"Good morning, everyone," Jarod said, smiling at the group. "Today isn't so much about things to do at the beach as things to do when something happens at the beach. It's a great place and lots of fun, but please never forget that it's deserving of respect."

"So, today is about beach first aid--let's start simply. Now, you've been out in the sun too long and forgotten to wear a hat and reapply your sunscreen after you've come out of the water. So now you're burnt. The treatment for that is fairly simple: Water, ibuprofen or naproxen, cold compresses, lotions with aloe, and cool baths. But what about if you get something more significant?"

"For instance, you've been walking along the beach, minding your own business, or staring at someone in a bathing suit," he smirked, "you suddenly have a red, itchy rash on your foot because you've stepped on a jellyfish. Contrary to anything you may have seen on television, the cure is not to urinate on each other. Rinse the area with salt water, not fresh," he emphasized, "remove any tentacles using a pair of tweezers, and apply white vinegar. Then give the person ibuprofen or acetaminophen and watch them carefully--if they get any worse, call an ambulance."

"Now, this next thing is very worst case scenario, but if you need to know it, you really need to know it. Learn the difference between heat stroke and heat exhaustion, because the treatment is different."

"Finally, I've got some basic lifesaving strokes for you to practice today, so please partner up and try not to drown each other while you're practicing. Have fun, and be careful."

[ooc: I won't have interaction access at all tomorrow, so please play amongst yourselves and try not to do anything Jarod would have to react to. Also, for the lifeguarding strokes, the Wiki section you're looking for is the section on manipulating objects. Have fun!]

Fry stood there for a while looking around. He really just wanted to make another sandcastle. This time he'd get it for sure! But.. no. He had to do strokes or something. Weren't strokes bad?

Molly walked up to Fry. "Hi, I don't think we've actually met yet. I'm Molly. You want to be partners for this?"

Girl. Talking. Hi. He should probably say that out loud and be smooth while doing it. He nodded at her. "Hey. I'm Fry. Sure. Do you wanna.. I don't know. I wasn't listening. What are we doing?"

"Practicing our lifesaving strokes?" Molly said a tad warily. Maybe this guy wasn't the best choice for a partner after all. "You want to save or be saved first?"

"Lifesaving! Like David Hasselhoff. I can do that!" Fry had seen enough of that show with red bathing suits to know what he was doing. TV was sacred to him. "I'll save first."

"Okay," Molly said as she kicked off her sandals and tossed her hat down with the rest of her stuff. "How far do you want me to swim out?"

"As far as you can!" Wait, no. He wasn't that great at swimming. "On second thought.." He pointed to another pair. "Out as far as them. Then I'll come save you." Fry pulled off his shirt. "Like David Hasselhoff." He looked down. "Maybe without less chest hair."

"Alright." Molly swam out, but not quite as far as the other group. She wasn't all too confident in Fry's abilities yet.

"Help. Help. Save me!" she called.

Fry puffed out his chest and ran towards the water. In slow motion.

He tried swimming in slow motion too until he realized that he was going to drown if he kept doing it. The water wasn't so bad. He didn't really like it THAT much, but he was getting to save a girl. Maybe she'd let him perform CPR later. With the C and the P and the well, any part that didn't involve the kissing thing.

"Hey," he said once he reached her. His voice might have been lower than normal because of the Hasselhoff impersonation. "I'm here to rescue you!" Ok, not that much lower.

"Um, I guess I'll be a tired swimmer," Molly said. "So, no panicking or unconsciousness. I just need help getting in."

Re: Practice your strokes

[identity profile] mmmanchovies.livejournal.com 2006-06-23 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
"Right! I can do that." He swam closer. "Uh, I need to put my arm around your.. you're not going to hit me for this, are you?"

"As long as you remember that I know where you are supposed to be putting your hands," Molly warned. "If they go anywhere they shouldn't be, that's when you have to worry."

"I'm a perfect gentlemen," Fry lied semi-convincingly as he slipped his arm around her waist. He started to drag her back to the shore, but got tired quickly. He was panting by the time they got halfway. Then his head dipped under the water.

Bad move.

"You okay?" Molly asked, hoping he was just goofing off.

Re: Practice your strokes

[identity profile] mmmanchovies.livejournal.com 2006-06-23 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Fry's head burst through the surface and he gasped for air. He coughed and spluttered a bit. "I'm good!" He kept trying to drag her, but found that they weren't making much progress.

Re: Practice your strokes

[identity profile] bruiser-in-pink.livejournal.com 2006-06-23 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"Uh, maybe we should switch now and I'll pretend to save you," Molly suggested. Hopefully before I'll have to try and save you for real.

Re: Practice your strokes

[identity profile] mmmanchovies.livejournal.com 2006-06-23 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"I can do it," Fry insisted. It took them way longer than the rest of the class, but they eventually reached the shore. Fry was panting because he was so tired, but when he sat back on the beach, he grinned at Molly. "Let's do it again!"

Re: Practice your strokes

[identity profile] bruiser-in-pink.livejournal.com 2006-06-23 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"Uh," Molly tried to come up with an excuse because she was pretty sure that if they went out there again, she would have to save him for real. "I'm kind of tired. I think we should rest for a while first."

Re: Practice your strokes

[identity profile] mmmanchovies.livejournal.com 2006-06-23 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"Sure," Fry said and flopped back onto the sand. He was pooped anyway.

[identity profile] bruiser-in-pink.livejournal.com 2006-06-23 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
"Just let me know when you're rested enough to swim back out because I still need to rescue you."

Re: Practice your strokes

[identity profile] mmmanchovies.livejournal.com 2006-06-23 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"Okay, let's rock!" He ran out and started swimming out.

Re: Practice your strokes

[identity profile] bruiser-in-pink.livejournal.com 2006-06-23 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Molly sighed and stood up. This really was a bad idea. "Don't go out too far!" she called after him.

Re: Practice your strokes

[identity profile] mmmanchovies.livejournal.com 2006-06-23 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Fry didn't swim out too far mostly because he was lazy.

Re: Practice your strokes

[identity profile] bruiser-in-pink.livejournal.com 2006-06-23 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Molly swam out after him. "Hi," she said when she reached him. "What kind of rescue do you need today?"

"I'll take a tired drowning swimmer rescue. Do you take Visa?"
