Xander is standing in front of the unlit campfire holding up a book in the hand that doesn't have splinted fingers. He's being careful not to get soot on it because yo, Tev'Meckian/English Dictionary. In hardback.

"Hi, my name's Xander and I'm a geek. I'm sure that revelation totally gasts your flabber. But despite the huge pains I take to hide that fact, I felt I should confess it for the good of all, since sometimes it comes in handy to be a geek."

He coughs, then says in a gravelly voice, "Pef trom Grabthar, jux shag!"

"Okay, a real Tev'Meckian would totally laugh at my accent, if there were real Tev'Meckians. But how many other people, or monsters, or real aliens, or whoever I might have to keep something secret from while my team talks in front of them, are gonna have a clue what I just said?"

He waves the book. "This is a totally invented language, which means the speaking population is limited to... well, geeks. That makes it really useful for talking in front of people you're pretty sure... aren't. Real languages are great too, if you happen to be lucky enough that your whole team speaks one that most people around you don't, but the made-up ones are a lot easier to come by.

No, I'm not gonna make you learn Tev'Meck. It's three hundred pages long and just reading a translation of The Cat In The Hat almost gave me laryngitis once. But there are other invented languages that are a lot easier to learn, and I've got a worksheet for you on one of them.

It sounds simple, but when you speak it fast enough it's pretty much just, well. Gibberish. Except to you and whoever you're talking to. If you practice enough, you can rattle off an entire conversation in front of your teacher without her realizing you're planning on sneaking out to fight lava monsters during the filmstrip --- which, uh is bad and you should totally not do mm'kay -- and if they start to catch on, at that point you'll probably be good enough at it that you can invent your own."

Xander grins. "So today you can spend the whole workshop yakking to each other about anything you want to yak about -- but the catch is, you have to do it in Gibberish."

Willow looked thoughtful. She scribbled something down on a piece of notebook paper and then held it up in front of her.

Hidigi Xidigandidiger!

Xander grinned and waved, then coughed and pretended there was no one there. ...So he was just holding up his own wee sign that said

Hidigi Widigillidigow Whidigoo Idigis Nidigot Hidigere!

for absolutely no reason.

The person who was not there most certainly did not wave back. Nor did she indicate that she'd brought him sandwiches.

Xander most certainly did not sneak back to visit the person who was not there, or her non-existant sandwiches either. Nope.

Likewise, there were absolutely no slices of cold pizza to be found amongst the PB&J sandwiches, because the sandwiches did not exist either. So there.

"I am doing extremely well, thank you," Willow said. "You?"

Xander waved the ouchy hand. "I had a small disagreement with a mummy, but other than that, not bad. Buffy's in the clinic, though, or she was last I heard."

"I heard the same thing," Willow said. "I tried to warn people she's not going to like that. And you should know better than to try to tangle with mummies! Especially if you were trying to cheat on your boyfriend."

Nadia could not help but notice the splinted fingers. "Are you okay?"

Xander glanced down at them and made a face, then shrugged. "I kind of got thrown into a tree. Mummy issues. But I'll live. Alanna worked her healy mojo on them, so they probably won't need to stay splinted for as long as they would've, even."

"Okay." Nadia nodded. Considering that she hated it when people harped on her injuries, she wasn't going to do that to Xander. "Glad you're okay. Mummy as in mother issues, or mummy as in Egyptian dead guy issues?"

Xander snorted. "The second one. That whole thing with the coffee lake and the kittens had a mummy attack for its grand finale."

"Ooo, exciting. Everyone else okay?"

"I... think so? Everybody came home in one piece, but Buffy's bene in the clinic for a couple days." Xander frowned. "She's got superstrength, though - she usually bounces back fast."

"So apparently I fail at reading calendars." Bridge notes casually.

Xander grins. "That's okay; apparently I fail at noticing when you fail at reading calendars."

"But at least this way we didn't actually, like, miss the entire day," Bridge points out.

"You have a point. Unlike..." Xander frowns. "Large parts of Sunday and Monday, which are kinda hazy in my mind. Like I remember doing things and talking to people, I just don't remember what I said."

"Really?" Bridge frowns, concerned. "Me too. I thought it might be a concussion thing, but if it happened to you too..."

"Well, I remember some stuff. Like us talking about our anniversary. It stuck in my head this morning because something seemed off about it, and then I remembered that I spent most of that Thursday going 'okay, relax, at least it's Thursday the thirteenth, not Friday.' And yesterday was the twelfth."

"Yes. Yes it was," Bridge says sheepishly. "I really don't know why I was a day ahead of myself, there."

"S'okay, gave me a chance to do a thing." Xander grins. Mysteriously. Well, he likes to think it's mysterious; mostly it's cheesy.

"A thing, huh?" Bridge grins back, pretty goofily.
