Elliot seems a little gleeful as she welcomes the students.

"Okay, so today? Is broken bone day. Well, actually, it's about fractures, sprains, strains and dislocations in general. See, they're all really hard to tell apart without an X-ray or medical training. So the rule is to always, always act like it's a fracture. Patients might report a "grating" sensation of bones rubbing together, extreme pain, tenderness, swelling, bruising and an inability to move the injured part. In first aid, you control any bleeding, take care of any shock, splint the affected area, and apply cold packs.

Victims with traumatic injuries, like what you'd see from a car wreck or a fall, should not be moved except by trained rescue workers. Head, neck and back injuries are serious and require special care for movement and transport of victims with these conditions.The one exception is if the victim is genuinely at risk of further injury -- like, if a car crash with people still in the cars is on train tracks. If that's going on, stabilize the head and neck and move the person without flexing the head, neck or spinal cord.

I've split you guys into groups of three: you should all watch me demonstrate splint technique for all fracture areas, and then practice it yourselves on the body parts you've been assigned. Work on each other, or ... well, the good news is, the Danger Shop has quit sending up badgers when I asked for victims. The bad news is, it's giving me miniature llamas instead. If someone knows how to actually work this thing, let me know, otherwise you can practice veterinary medicine, or tape up each other. If you don't want to work on each other? Watch out for the llama spit."

Seras looked anxious.

"I don't know about anyone else, but I'm leary of dealing with anyone's neck or spine fractures..."

"Yeah, I think I'm okay with trying a jaw before we get near the neck," Dawn said, looking through the materials.

Peter looked through the materials and idly wondered if he ever broke anyone's jaw. It's not like he often stuck around to check.

"Good call. Looks like the first things we should probably do are make sure our victim is breathing and get a bandage ready since that'll help either dislocation or fracture."

"If you want to check his airway, I'll try and get the bandages ready," Dawn offered, "and we may want some ice for afterwards."

"Sounds good. Hey, guy, are you breathing?" Peter asked as he checked.

Dawn rolled her eyes and began folding bandages. "So, is he? Because we could totally skip the first aid and go straight to burial if he's not."

"He is breathing, yes. But for some reason he's not talking much," Peter joked. "I wonder why that is."

"I can't imagine," Dawn snickered. "Here, bandages. You want to stick your fingers in his mouth, or do you want me to do it?"

"Oooh, we need gloves."

"I'll do the finger thing," Peter said, sliding a glove onto his right hand. "After all, two hands are needed for decent bandaging."

"Oh, right," Dawn nodded, standing by with the bandages. "Stupid mummies and scorpions."

"You helped fight the mummies, too?" asked Seras.

She'd been hearing a lot about these mummies, lately.

"Yep. A giant scorpion got my arm," Peter said, holding up his cast. He got into position. "Okay, bandage away."

Seras' eyes widened.

Bloody hell...

"Okay...I am revising my former opinion that mummies are the least scary of all monsters."

Dawn carefully bandaged the guy's jaw, glancing at the reference materials a few times as she worked to make sure she was doing it right. "Oh, they're up there, but there's tons of scarier stuff out there. Mummies are just harder to kill than a lot of them."

Seras tilted her head.

"You talk like you're an expert," she said.

"Naah," Dawn replied, pulling her fingers free of the knot she'd tied in the bandage. "I just know a bunch of experts who like to talk a lot."

"Ah. Gotcha," said Seras as she leaned closer to examine how they were faring with their 'patient'.

"I think he's secure," Peter said, pulling his fingers out of the guy's mouth. "What next?"

Dawn stuck her hands in her pockets and stared at their other patient. "Neck guy."

"Uh...maybe we should just call an ambulance and try to keep him comfortable?"

Peter checked the materials. "Call 911, check for breathing, heartbeat, and shock, treat them as appropriate. This person doesn't seem to be in shock, so that's a plus. Want to call 911?"
