Baking Workshop 6/19, Monday Morning

Piper grins at the students as they arrive. "We are going to make pie today, apple to be specific."

She points to the pie she made for the class. "You'll need to work with a partner. One of you will make the crust and the other will make the filling. Then you'll both work together to assemble the pie. Since there are eight of you, you should all have a partner. If anyone is absent, I'll be someone's partner."

She hands them a list of ingredients and instructions. "Have fun!"

Equipment Needed

Mixing Bowl

Rolling Pin

Knife

Measuring Spoons

Measuring Cups

Dough Blender

Cutting Board

Pie Pan

Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon sugar

6 tablespoons butter

6 tablespoons shortening

6 to 8 tablespoons ice water

Instructions

Warm butter in microwave until soft, but not melted.

Mix flour, salt and sugar in bowl.

Add butter, shortening and ice water.

Wrap pie crust in plastic wrap then place in refrigerator for 20 minutes.

Ingredients

5 peeled apples

1 cup sugar

2 tablespoons flour

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon vinegar

2 tablespoons butter

Instructions

Peel and slice apples.

Soak them in water with a tablespoon of lemon juice. This will help prevent them from turning brown.

Mix flour, cinnamon, salt and vinegar in large mixing bowl.

Mix apples into the pie flavoring.

Instructions

Assembling the Pie

Now that your pie crust has had time to cool divide it into two equal halves.

Roll one of the balls of pie crust out until it is around 1/8 of an inch thick.

Wrap the dough around the rolling pin and unroll it onto your pie pan.

Take a fork and poke holes in the bottom of the crust to let steam out as it cooks.

Place the apples in the pie in a pattern so that they all fit in the pie.

Pour the leftover coating over them.

Place about 4 chunks of butter on top of apple filling.

Roll out the remaining pie dough and place it on top.

Create a pattern around the edge of the pie by using the back of a knife.

Baking the Pie

Cut long strips of tinfoil and place them around the edge of the pie.

Bake pie at 400 degrees for 50-60 minutes.

Take tinfoil off about ten minutes before the pie is baked to have a golden brown edge.

"Why thank you," Willow said. She carefully scraped the ingredients into the crust. "It smells good, in spite of the vinegar."

Anders had the chunks of butter ready to put on top of the pie filling once it was all in the pan. "I think that's the not-so-sassy cinnamon. Now we just have to put the top on, and hope there are helpful heat-resistant oven gnomes."

Re: Bake

Willow grinned, and reached for something hanging off a nearby hook. "Even better. Heat-resistant oven gloves!"

"And today, that is the best invention ever," Anders replied. Okay, so his top crust wasn't perfectly even, but at least it covered the entire pie, which looked sort of like it could be a killer frisbee when it grew up, what with the tinfoil strips around the edges.

"Okay, I think we're ready to put it in now."

Re: Bake

Willow got the oven door and used the gloves to pull out the shelf for the pie to rest on. "There you go."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-20 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Anders put the pie down gingerly. "Okay. Now, um, sit there and bake, and be a good little pie."

He straightened up and looked at Willow. "So far, pretty much so good. I think this calls for a high five."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-20 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Willow closed up the oven and raised her hand. "High five!"

Of course she still had the oven mitt on.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-20 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Anders gave the oven mitt a high five anyway. "Is it too early to feel all accomplished?"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-20 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
"I don't think so," Willow said. "We made it this far with no fatalities. All that's left is hoping for no burning."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-20 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
Anders held up both hands with fingers crossed. All of them.

"I guess it won't make any difference if I watch it the whole time, will it?"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-20 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
"It might not boil that way," Willow said. "Then again, pies aren't supposed to so maybe that's a good thing?"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-20 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
"Okay then." Anders grinned and proceeded to park himself in front of the oven.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-20 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Willow sat on the counter again to keep him company.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-20 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
"So far," Anders announced about fifteen minutes later, "I see no gnomes."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-20 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
"They could be invisible," Willow pointed out.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-20 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
"This is very true," Anders admitted. "They probably wouldn't be as helpful if people could see them, and bother them."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-20 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh yeah," Willow said. "People would be interrupting them all the time, asking for autographs, telling them they love what they did with that chocolate cake the other day."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-20 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
"And then they'd spend all their time doing autograph tours and talk show appearances, and then where would we be?"

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-20 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
"Buying their t-shirts and writing fanfic?" Willow guessed.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-20 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
Anders turned a little bit red at the mention of fanfic, but nodded. "Probably. But also with a sad shortage in the baked goods department."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-20 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
"True," Willow agreed, not noticing the blush. "Plus then there'd be flame wars all over the internet. Brownie/Cookie gnome shippers vs. the Cookie/Pie gnome shippers."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-20 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
"And then there'd be the people who send email going, 'Oh my gods, what the frak kind of sick bastard are you to ship cookies and pie in the first place?'" Anders mumbled. Not at all bitterly.

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-20 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
"Exactly!" Willow said. "When, hello, subtext that's pretty much text! We all saw how cookies and pie were looking at each other."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2006-06-20 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
Anders snickered. "Yeah, exactly. And then someone will go and write Brownie/Pie just to spite them all."

Re: Bake

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-20 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, right," Willow snorted. "Like Brownie would ever touch Pie if aliens didn't make them do it."
