Nature & Nature Magic (Thursday Afternoon, 06/15/2006)

Today's class was meeting in the park, which had been in a reminder e-mail Jenny had *handwavily* sent out.

"Drumming and dance are very powerful tools for raising energy. So today? Take your pick. Grab some instruments and make music, or dance to the music your classmates are making. I've also got some costumes and masks for those of you that feel like playing dress-up along with the rest of it."

OOC: Mod your own costumes and masks. Many different kinds of percussion instruments are available, so, again, mod your own.

Free (and legal!) music available for you to get some drumming sounds going on your own -
Daveed Korup
Turbo Tabla (Warning: Site plays music. But not tinny-sounding music, at least.)

Also, the Middle Eastern Rhythms FAQ is available for perusal.

Course syllabus and roster. for this workshop.

Wait for the OCD! OCD is up, time to play.

*snort*

"Flying baby animals coming up." Blair beat his drum faster and launched into an elaborate spinning dance that circled around Willow several times.

"Any wee winged animals yet?"

Willow looked up. "Not yet. Maybe we should try harder?"

She did her own circling dance. It quite possibly resembled an airplane more than a baby ducky, but she did her best.

"Maybe sounds would help. When tribes get ready to go off to battle they yell war cries, maybe we should make sounds for the animals." Blair panted as he continued to dance.

"Quack, quack, moo." Oops. Let's just hope that any baby cows that fall from the sky have wings.

What sound does a buffalo make?

"Cheep? Cheeeeep cheep cheep cheep cheep?" Willow tried. This could be a sparrow, or a robin, or somebody who just didn't feel like picking up their part of a check.

Only the sound of their flapping bbq-sauce coated wings.

"Cluck, cluck, clu-" Blair stopped mid bounce and mid drum beat and looked up. "Willow! Tiny bird!"

Okay, so it's possible the bird just happened to be flying through the park at the moment. Or it's possible that it's just the first in a rainstorm of baby animals with wings. It's Fandom...you pick the more likely option.

"We did that!" Willow said, excitedly. She added more of a butt wiggle to her movements, hoping that if there was waddling there'd be ducks.

Blair watched Willow for a moment and then joined in. He wasn't sure what the butt wiggle was for, but it was a lot of fun.

Willow then went all out and started doing the chicken dance. "Do you think if we screw this up we'll summon bugs by accident?"

"Na na na na na." Blair clapped his hands four times and then started doing Willow's chicken dance again. "I don't think so. Maybe a stray goose or a platypus. They seem sort of confused normally."

"We could show that we welcome them in spite of the confusion!" Willow said. She tried doing a platypus dance. This involved a lot of stiff-legged walking.

Blair kicked backwards with his legs and made little hissing noises.

Willow looked confused. "You're trying to summon flying snakes?"

Re: Drumming & Dance - Nature Magic, 6/15

[identity profile] lovechildblair.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"No, man. Platypus have little spurs on their hind feet with poision in them." He kicked again and made the hissy noise.

"Although snakes on a plane that fly would be sorta cool."

"They do?" Willow gasped. "but they look so sweet and innocent with their bills and feet!"

Re: Drumming & Dance - Nature Magic, 6/15

[identity profile] lovechildblair.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
"Sweet and innocent till they attack in the night and shoot you up with poison!" Blair nodded seriously. "Then when you lay dying they start to munch on you...while you're still alive."

"That's why they have those big lips, you know."

Re: Drumming & Dance - Nature Magic, 6/15

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's awful!" Willow said. "Worse than frogs!"

Re: Drumming & Dance - Nature Magic, 6/15

[identity profile] lovechildblair.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"Way worse than frogs, Willow. Way worse." Blair beat out a harsh rhythm on the drum and yelled out, "Tibbir!"

He turned and smiled at Willow. "Tribal warning against frogs. That'll keep 'em away."

"Nobody ever told me there was one!" Willow looked most upset about that. She stamped her feet to try to repeat Blair's pattern, then yelled "TABOR!!!"

Nobody said she got these things correct on the first try.

[identity profile] lovechildblair.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Blair laughed. "Almost. I think that's the name of a mountain. You want to say Tibbir."

He held out his drum so she could take a few good swats at it.

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Willow was prepared to go all night in order to get this right. She drummed out the pattern again.

"TIBBIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRUH!!!"

Re: Drumming & Dance - Nature Magic, 6/15

[identity profile] lovechildblair.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Blair watched in awe of Willow. "Dude. The only island may be frogless now."

Re: Drumming & Dance - Nature Magic, 6/15

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"Really?" Willow asked. "You're not just saying that?"

Re: Drumming & Dance - Nature Magic, 6/15

[identity profile] lovechildblair.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
"You're a force to be feared, seriously." Blair nodded. "If I was a frog right now I'd be shaking in my slimy green skin."

Re: Drumming & Dance - Nature Magic, 6/15

[identity profile] willbedone.livejournal.com 2006-06-15 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yay!" Willow did a dance of victory.
